Title: Two of Two static
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on January 27, 2013, 01:39:48 pm
Just finished this one off. Its 64" ntn, 57-58# @ 27" and is covered with WDB skins. The tip overlays are hard maple and buffalo horn lam'ed together. Im really enjoying this one, almost as much as its twin flatbow I posted last week, "One of One". The bows came from the same tree and where built exactly the same way, one was flipped at the tips and one was recurved. They shoot the same, but the static is VERY smooth to draw and shoot. If its faster, I cant see it.

45-50 minutes steams. The tips were about 5/8 square when I steamed and bent them in.

Man Pearl, that's a beauty! I noticed the color of the skin changes near the tips and I really like the contrast.  Is this something that occurs naturally on the snake or did you do something to make it look that way?  I've never worked with WDB skins or even seen a live rattlesnake.

Hey PD,  that is just a fine example of a hunting bow.  Really nice.

Whats your experience with statics vs. working recurves at 64".  Seems to me once they get 66 or 68 you start running into trouble with extra non-bending mass with statics, but somewhere below 64-64"  you still get the benefit.

Gabe

Thats what db's look like naturally Adam. Some are more brown, some are more black, but they all have the same basic pattern. I like to use the black/white bands at the tips if the skins include them still.

I dont buy the diminishing returns thing Gabe, and heres why. When I make a 64-68" flat bow or long bow I leave at least 8" stiff on each tip, thats dead weight as we all know. I have a few static forms I use. The form I used on this longer bow was quite tight and actually uses less than 8"of tip to make. So now I can make a longer static that has equal, or less weight at the tips and still dramatically change the string angle. And the string lays on the bows belly at brace, effectively "shortening" the bow after release.

5/8" square tips where steamed for 50 minutes or so. Then bent in one fatal swoop.

Well thank you.  What i love about your work (and aim to do as well) is your attention to detail, precision, and always seemingly perfect tiller.  These are the things that i take pride in doing also, but i'm certain i've a ways to go before i reach your level of the craft.  Not to mention you seem to do this in about 1/5th the time it takes me!!! :o

Keep'm comin sir :)
