Welcome to the 2013 Primitive Archer Bow Trade
PLEASE READ ALL THE RULES AND REGULATIONS FIRST BEFORE SIGNING UP!!!!
I will be heading up the trade this year and have formed a committee of 4 other folks. If there is any issue or problem that should come up the committee will then discuss and make a decision.
The committee members are:
PatB
Keenan
Pearl Drums
Coaster500
If anyone has any questions please ask here and do not send us PM's,one of us will answer your question. The members and I will be watching the sign up very thoroughly.
Deadline to sign up will be a week from today on February 4th at midnight est.
Deadline to ship will be by August 15th
PLEASE READ THE RULES THOROUGHLY...AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THEM BEFORE SIGNING UP!!!!!!
RULE #1: You must have been a member of this site for at least 3 months. This is only trying to ensure that we have a basic idea and understanding of who folks are that are trying to sign up,and if they are someone who will only ship a bow that has an acceptable tiller, and most importantly are they someone who will fulfill there vow to the relationship of this community. I will make one exception to this rule, and that is if you feel like you have made proven bows and trades. For example if you just signed up to primitive archer but have been making bows for awhile before signing up,or if you were involved with the trade over on trad gang and just signed up here because you want to do this trade as well. Feel free to speak up in this thread if you feel like you would want to join but haven't been a member for 3 months, and the committee will discuss and vote on it.
RULE #2: During the sign up if a member doesn't know much about you,it will be brought to my attention and discussed. If for some reason we feel like we need more answers to know who you are better,do not be offended if you get a pm from one of us wanting to know more about you. And please don't be offended if we feel like you are just not quite ready yet.
RULE #3: If you are under the age of 18 you must receive permission from your parents, and your parents must contact Pat or me via phone number first before signing up...Pats number is 828-884-6205...and my phone number is 724-843-2729....my real name is Chris,so ask for me.
The next set of rules is how you will go about signing up.
RULE #4: First in this thread you will state that you are in..second state whether you are right handed or left handed..next you will give a draw weight within ten pounds....then you will state a draw length within 4"....and lastly you must state usa shipping only or if you are ok shipping out of the usa,or if you are in another country and where your comfortable to ship..this is a bow trade and you will receive what someone else makes for you...don't ask for a specific bow...or any other specifics as to what you want or don't want on a bow. Remember this is about you making a bow for someone else first, and not just to receive a bow.
For example: Im in...right handed....50-60 pounds.....24-28". .usa shipping only...then you must comply with the next rule(#5)
RULE #5: YOU MUST COMPLETE THIS STEP IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE. You must send pearl drums(Chris) a pm with your legal real name...your address where you want the bow sent...and your phone number. This information will be held confidentially on a spreadsheet created by pearl drums. If Chris does not receive all of this required information your name will not be going into the drawing of names and you will not be a part of this years trade.
For example:
Chris Driesenga..aka..Blackhawk.
111 smith st
Smithville,Pa
111111
my phone # is 111-111-1111
obviously that's not my real address and number for private concerns, and only used this as a public example
RULE #6: If for some reason you receive a bow,but for some legitimate reason cannot send one out you must contact me,and I will tell you to send it on to the person your supposed to make and send a bow too. If you do not send the bow you received to your recipient you will be banned from any other future trades, and your name will be going into Eddie Parkers(mullet) blackbook...and trust me you do not want to be put in his book. Communication goes a long ways....just let us know if you are having life issues,or problems with your build and we will work with you. We want to help you and that's what the committee is here for.
RULE #7: You must check in occasionly on the "2013 PA Bow Trade Works In Progress" thread. Even if your not building one yet please check in. I will post a name of all the names in this years trade at the start of the works in progress thread. If any of us see you haven't checked in for awhile don't be surprised if you get a pm from one of us asking you how things are going, and if we don't hear back from you in a week after sending out the pm we will be trying to contact you via your phone number. Communication...communication....communication please...I cant stress this rule enough. If you have a problem let us know...in this day and age there is no excuse for you not to be able to contact one of us.....heres my phone number in case your computer crashes, and you cant borrow a neighbors/friend/relatives computer to check in and let me know,or you cant get to a local library to get on a computer...my # is 724-843-2729. PLEASE WRITE MY NUMBER DOWN NOW!!!! If after all this and you don't respond back to me I will tell your builder to not send it until I hear back from you.
The trade is open internationally. But you must comply with rule #4.
Once all the names are compiled they will be sent to Calendergirl(Marie),and she will draw the names for us and send you a pm with the person and his or her stats and address you are supposed to build and send a bow to. DO NOT CONTACT THIS PERSON. Remember its a secret, and you don't want to ruin the surprise.
And don't be a procrastinator....I know we have six months to build a bow,but don't let that give you a false sense of security. Get started right away!!!!!
Primitive Archer is not responsible for any of this trade..and they are allowing us to use their site for this trade.
...

If worse comes to worse, and all the staves I'm working on break, are boards an acceptable alternative? Didn't read anything in the rules about that(unless i missed it) I have enough staves, but i want to make sure that if they are broken that i can still fulfill my side of the trade. Although, i strongly doubt that they will all break.

-
i agree with you there steve! you were the one who made that CRAZY lumpy VM bow!

I would be honored if y'all would let this worthless old nut in !
I aint real sure what all that legal mumbo jumbo said but am sure it will get explained to me somewhere along the way!
Not real sure why we would trust any legal info to Pearly but we can try it !
I may not be able to start till after it warms up so you will need to be patient with me and I can not build a heavy bow ! If something gets in the way I will give my hunting bow up to make sure any name intrusted to me gets a bow that I did !!
If you folks are ok with it !
I am in
45-55 lbs

I have 42 entries who have emailed me their shipping info and real name. Please forward that info to me if you signed up here. If you dont, there is a good chance your name wont be in the "hat". We have four of us working together and need everybodys help to stay organized and effeicent.
Thanks all!

I'm going to slow down a lot. Looks like I'll only have a couple bows to build this summer so I'll have the time to get in on the trade.
I have a question, can we get with the person to get a little better specks. 10 Pounds and 4 inchs of draw lenth is a lot of quessing. Can I PM this person and find out his true draw lenth and poundage he would like. So I can build just what he would like. I know when you get a bow you want to use it. I'd like to get a little closer in draw weight and draw lenth.
-
Roy its all supposed to be secret until the bowe arrives on your recips front porch. Once you get a name you can search that persons posts and find the info you need to nail the draw length down to the inch. As fas as weight, pick a number in the middle and shoot for it.
-
Some more words of advice for those in the trade or wanting to sign up but have not made many posts and replys (like under 50)...its highly recommended you start replying more anywhere on the forum so the person who draws your name will have a better understanding of who you are,and what you like and dislike ...it will benefit you and your builder.....I have sent out pms to guys who qualify but haven't posted a lot for this very reason....if you don't know much about the name given you, you then can click on there profile and go in and read all the posts and replys they ever said on primitive archer..and if you feel like you need more info try to see if they have a "buddy" on here that knows them more and pm them to try and get a better understanding of the person your building for....the recon work is part of the fun ;)

Quit teasing and dinking around soy n Kevin...
-
I bet if we all, mostly meaning me, got our trade bows finished by May we could have a big bow swap party at the Classic. I bet that would get about 80% of the bows "sent and recieved" :)
-
Thanks for getting this set up, Blackhawk. Though I have to say, if you get another James Parker bow this time we'll know you rigged it. >:D
-
Ok if everyone plays nice, and pappy signs on than ....well we will see if pappy signs on...and maby gun doc to ;D
-
Man I need a name and some stats. I got like eight bows half tillered ready to go to OJAM to finish up. I'm chompin' at the bit boys!
-
Fantastic turn out so far. ;D ;D
Greg I am glad to see your name in here. Like Pat said, even a rusty build from you would be a great bow!
I had decided not to join this year so I could get caught up on my list as I have a very busy schedule this spring. However looking at all the people joining this year has me thinking this is going to be hard to sit by and watch.
I can still think of a few names that I don't see in here. Juniper Junky, Gordon, Blacktail, Pappy and bunch more.

-
Man this is great. Should provide months worth of viewing pleasure if everyone post updates and photos of their progress as they build
their trade bow. Thanks again to Blackhawk, Pearl Drums, Coaster, Pat & Keenan for doing the organizing of this, what a great way to
bring the group together.
Can't wait to see who's name I draw, want to start my 1st trade bow!!!
-
Pearl since you are tracking the names you want me to send you the list of names we banned over on trad gang. If so let me know.

Your constant begging is getting on my nerves, I dont care how old you are. I have two boys 14 & 16, If I caught them doing the same thing you are, they wouldnt walk right for a week. Rather than begging and pleading? Try effort and work, you may find out its not so bad.
-
I agree with you PD that's the way I was raised also if you wanted something bad enough you worked for it & that's what I tell my kids because if I caught my kids doing it they wouldn't be able to walk right or sit for awhile.
Rob

I got to agree Squirrel. I'm 17 and have been trading on this site for about 2 years all around the country. I haven't asked for one donation in all that time and don't plan on it.
I started in your same position. No goods and not a lot of money. Here's what I did....
I bought a poplar board at Lowes for 3 bucks. Using only hand tools, I turned it into six beautiful atlatls. I tradeded 3 for staves and sold 2 for $20 bucks a piece. Using that money I began to purchase various things I needed. I bought leather purses and jackets at thrift stores, found old tools at garage sales, turned junk steel into functional knives, built and sold bows, making another $200 bucks in the process. Two of my bows are owned by members on this site and as far as I know, they are very satisfied.
I have traded with as much generosity as I've been able to and have made small purchases here and there. Haven't had a bad trade yet and I've done probably 4-5 dozen. You'll find people are generous once they get to know you are a man of your word and do everything you can to ensure that they are just as happy as you are. I've never asked for something for free, yet the more deals I complete and the more friends I make, the more and more I find that people are willing to help me, and I would do the same for them.
As soon as I turned 16 I got a job worked hard around sports and school. Bought a car, and have enjoyed a fair amount of freedom this past year.
All your begging has been pissing me off too, since I feel like your giving us younger folks a bad name.
Just really asking you to please stop, and make do with what you got. It ain't impossible.
Jon
-
Id like to add briefly here. I have to say, i do feel for you, not because of the way your going about getting help but because i have a similar situation. I only have 5$ in my pocket, but i have a large number of things id like to buy or do that require money. The biggest expense id like to save for is beginning beekeeping. Which totals around 400$. I know i have to get a job for the expense as well as other. And the reason i bring beekeeping into this, like ifrit said, if you have something people want they will trade you for it. I can sell honey to people i know, and i can trade it on here for things that i want, same with the wax from bees. A good suggestion, if you can find someone to work for until you can acquire a solid job that's one way of going about it. Another is what ifrit suggested, build things that people would trade for or they would buy. Also, highly advisable to not take over others' posts by putting an unrelated topic in the thread that was created for something else. This one is one example, this thread was meant for the bow trade, if it doesn't pertain to it it doesn't go here.
-

Ditto to what's been said, i think most of us on here are po folks, that's part of the draw (if even a small one) to this craft.

ok sorry everyone i was just looking for a little help but i will start new and hope we can all be freinds after this, sorry for all of thoose i have annoyed and will never ask for any freebies or beg for anything again. sorry guys. no hard feelings? SS
-
I would never ask for anything like that.get your parents to help you out.
This site has alot to offer open your eyes and you will learn from all the people on this site . The wealth of knoledge on this site is not worth all the gold in the world.
Well I ran a ring on the osage stave Blackhawk gave me over the summer from 08. Going to make it 60" has twenty knots in it all together and three of them are peep holes in one limb looking sweet on the longstring about ready for the brace . But I am at that point I need to know the stats of the person I get to send this one to if it holds up. . I know pearl drum I said I was going to slow down on this one.But the Blackhawk school of bow building dont know the word slow down.
-
Squirrel I dare say I have given away more of my own staves than I have used for myself, thats no lie. If giving a person a chunk of wood can make them that happy? Then why not do give it to them, thats my philosophy. Im not angry at you, just tired of hearing it. If you want some wood then sit down and think about something you can make or collect to trade. Fine a few bits of leather and stitch a pouch, maybe collect a few more skulls to add to your squirell skull. Lots of people like to have them bleached. Go to a butcher shop and collect tendons for sinew. Its all around you, go look for it. In the meanwhile keep reading here to find out how we go about collecting and finding our goods. And remember, shipping is INCREDIBLY expensive and a bit difficult. That doesnt help your USA cause much. I bet there are plenty of English bowyers all around you......I think I may even know a few.
-
One more day guys to sign up 8)
-
hey PD i guess i could get some sinew and do some stuff like that. i do have a skull collection but is very small at the moment. but thanks for the suggestions. SS

It was Too spooky for me at the time, but Danged if it hasn't shaped up to look promissing now...

I'd like to ask a question about the draw length range. I totally understand the necessity for having a weight range but I'm not quite seeing the benefit of everyone giving a 4" range for draw length. Most of us have one comfortable draw length that we shoot from and I would prefer to know what that length is for my recipient instead of having to guess. If a bow comes in under weight then so be it but I think we're all capable of tillering a bow out to a certain, specific length. I don't mean to nitpick the rules you came up with because I think they are clear and fair. That was the only one that jumped out at me as potentially problematic. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks again for doing all this work to get the trade rolling.
-

I don't see a problem, i'll probably use the longer draw listed and the high end weight, you can always check his posts and see what he uses most of the time, I always try and do enough research to figure out what I want to build a guy, now if he wants a 120# warbow your out of luck fishfinder >:D Bub
-
Weylin, I'll be doing research on whoever I'm drawn to build a bow for. If that doesn't give enough info, I'll be looking at who might be there close friends, those folks they seem to chat with all, then PM them to get info about that person. Last case scenrio, I'll ask someone who's in this trade to PM them on my behalf after an oath of secracy of course. Also, I noticed some folks put there actual draw length with their range. So, I followed suit when I commented to the exchange.
-
Yeah, I put my actual draw length in there, and I intend to research my recipient too. But I guess I'm not sure why we can't just have our actual draw length be a part of the info and take some of the guesswork and digging out of the equation. Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill and if so I'll shut up; it just seems like we're making that aspect unnecessarily confusing. I just want to make sure I make a bow that my recipient will be able to use and enjoy to the fullest.

I'm excited about the trade. Even if I draw someone like James Parker or any number of other highly skilled bowyers in this I feel they will appreciate the effort I put into thier bow. Just think, what other hobby, craft, art form, profession or whatever could you potentially put your work in the hands of a master of that craft. It's amasing to think about it really. And in the fellowship of this community there is absolutely no pressure, only that which we put on ourselves.

-
I see ya gave into the peer pressure pappy ;) ;D  sometimes it is good to give in ;)
-
Weylin I think Dave(hedgeapple) covered it pretty well...also to add to that is everyone's draw length will vary within two inches at the least because of different bow types. You take a long deep stiff handled bow and shoot it next to a short thin bend in the handle bow and your draw length will easily shrink two inches without a doubt. And most people don't actually draw what they say they do. Its really not that important and a hard "rule" that must be followed...there's no problem stating an actual specific number....but if you state a specific number how do you know that person is basing it off of a long stiff handled bow or a short bendy? And that's where doing your homework comes in and find out what the person likes and dislikes....that's part of the fun is doing the recon work about who your building a bow for.
-
Its Monday folks....
THIS IS THE LAST DAY TO SIGN UP!!!!!!! SIGN UPS END TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT EASTERN STANDARD TIME.
Ill be checking in at midnight and making a post..anyone after my post will not be allowed in.

You going to be late for work Tuesday morning? ;D
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words! Keenan, you don't have to sit on the sideline and watch you know! ;) Who wouldn't be excited to receive one of your beautiful bows!
Alright Pappy, I guess we have to finish preparing for the boyscout group bowbuilding in February first. How many did you say were coming?
-
Not for sure, will know the # this week, but as of now it's 10,should be easy. ;) :) We can go pick out the wood for this deal if you want this weekend. :)
Pappy
-
Yay Pappy!

I think bows should be made to a specific draw length unless otherwise authorized by the recipient. Draw weight can vary within the range.

Didn't realize that this trade was going on. I would like to get in. However, I just registered here a couple of weeks ago. Made my first bow just shy of 2 years ago. Have made several more since then. Have used ash, mulberry, hackberry, and currently working on a short Osage and a sinew backed juniper. Been on TG for about 3 years and the guys over there have helped me out a lot! Would love to make one for the trade and would do my very best to make it a nice one. If I haven't been here long enough I understand. Thanks guys!

I don't know how the rest of you feel, but it would make things a lot easier if I knew the exact draw length of the individual I am building a bow for rather than trying to guess. 4" is an awfully large spread. Just suggesting...
-
It's midnight, where's my name? >:D
-
You're right Gordon but I'm going to guess that a persons draw falls in the middle of the range.... 24-28 = 26? ....
This is going to be great!!!!
-
I don't know how the rest of you feel, but it would make things a lot easier if I knew the exact draw length of the individual I am building a bow for rather than trying to guess. 4" is an awfully large spread. Just suggesting...
Well just send it to me I'm between 26 and 26 ;D
-
I plan on doing a lot of researching when I get my name.
-
Alright folks....I gotta put a stop to this monster.....sign ups are over.....thanks to all who signed up this year. :)
-
I haven't made a "real" bow in years! I hope I draw someone with a super short draw length that likes em light! Gonna try to get started this weekend. I have a few staves that should be well seasoned and ready to go. :)
super short and light....in that case if you get me by some chance make whatever you want ;)
-
You're right Gordon but I'm going to guess that a persons draw falls in the middle of the range
Yep, unless I hear otherwise that is what I am going to assume.
-
I draw 28" Gordo ;)
-
Very cool. ;) :) :)
Pappy
-
And the total is????? What a cool trade.
-
************************* DO RESEARCH IF YOU WANT TO KNOW YOUR PERSONS EXACT DRAW LENGHT ****************************
As explained a few times already. A persons draw can vary 1-2" easily just by the style of bow you make them. Im 27" rigid handle and 26" at most with a bendy short bow. Most all of us post enough info that a person can easily dig up what they need to know in 2 minutes.
-
The committee has one more person that needs to be discussed and ok'ed. As soon as we have come to an answer the official number will be released and pearl drums will send the list to calendargirl(Marie). Marie will be drawing and sending out the names again this year....please be patient and bear with us guys, I know everyone wants a name right now,but this is gonna take some work to process this and get everyone a name thanks to Marie. This is a huge trade and a lot to handle.
Again thanks to everybody who signed up...we couldn't do this without all the stand up trustworthy honest folks here...you guys are the ones that make this happen. This trade is run off of the great integrity of everyone here.
And please keep in communication in the works in progress thread....we have near 80 guys to keep track off...please help us out and do your part by chiming in every once in awhile so we don't have to go hounding you,and it'll make it easier on the commitee and all of us.
HAVE A GREAT TRADE GUYS!!!!!AND MOST OF ALL HAVE FUN!!!!!
-
Thanks again for organizing this, guys and gal. Looking forward to it. I'm honoured to be a part of such a great group of people . No political, geographical, religious boundaries.Just a generous bunch of people sharing a passion that connects us all . Let the games begin!
-
Wooo hoo! Let's the games begin!
-
Pearl I didn't mean I get two. I'll make two bows if needed. Heck I'll even say right now I'll make up for the no shows. But we won't have any of those this year. RIGHT GUYS?
-
Right on Jon! I can smell a 100% success rate this year!
-
This is shaping up to be an amazing trade... I can't wait to see all the personalities spill out into this trade via their bows.... Yippee ki-yay .... lets get go to work this rodeo started ;)
-
Yeah... great fun ahead :)
-
my draw is right round 28 for whoever's lookin. think i put 24-28, honestly i can live with 26-30 in my weight range.
Looks like it's going to be an awesome trade. Let the shavings fly!
-
This is shaping up to be a great bow trade. I'm looking forward to seeing all the cool bows and watching the not so experienced get more experience and self confidence. Even though I'm not in this years trade I am here for support and any help I can give. Feel free to PM me if you have a problem or any questions. I'll do what I can to answer you in a timely manner. You are in great hands with the trade moderators so don't be a stranger...just don't bug them with minutia.
I know that there are a few disappointed folks that did not fulfill the requirements for this years trade but I encourage you to get involved with support and the spirit of the trade. Heck, build a bow along with everyone else. It will only improve your abilities and when done you will have another bow for your stable or to give to a friend or family member.
I'm gonna be the bummer here....I've been in every bow trade and Christmas exchange here on PA. It is inevidable that one or more of the participants will not fulfill their obligation to the trade and to the members of the PA community. I am always amazed how we, as a community, cover any deficiencies so everyone involved in the trade(or Christmas exchange)will recieve what is coming to them because this is one of the best groups around, one that I have been proud to be a part of for many years.
We all know how life can get in the way. We have no control of our health, our family's health, work or a number of other situations that may get in our way of completeing our obligation.
If you find yourself getting in the weeds or a situation comes up that delays or prevents you from completeing your trade bow, please contact myself or any or the other trade moderaters and we will see if we can come up with a solution. Don't wait until the last moment to spring this and don't just walk away never to be seen or heard from again. Just man up and we will figure it out. We all understand how these things happen.
We have no real recourse for slackers. You will get away with what ever you get but you will have to live with yourself about that. If you do "crap out" on this trade your name WILL go on to a list of other dead beats and that list covers a wide area of this world and the ciber world.
Please make me a liar. If would be a first if we get 100% fulfilment but I for one would love to see that. It is not impossible and I trust that this group of folks will make themselves, our comunity and PA proud of our accomplishments. These trades are very good advertisement for Primitive Archer Magazine, our benefactor, and helps increase our membership numbers and magazine subscriptions. It helps us pay our dues!
So with all that said, lets get ready to get this ball rolling. Please be patient while waiting to see who your recipient will be. Marie Luther(Calendergirl) has again volenteered to help draw names and distribute the names. Marie has a job already and a family to take care of so please thank her for her efforts here. And, thanks to Blackhawk, Pearlie, Coaster and whomever else is involved in getting this trade going. A special thanks should go out to all of you too. You are going to make this 2013 PA Bow Trade a resounding success and help to keep it all runnung smoothly until the last bow goes out to its recipient.
Like Mat said...."Let the games begin!"
-
If you can not figure out how to research or you are having trouble with info on the person you are building for just shoot me a PM and I'll do some digging for you. Please do your best to research yourself first as it would take allot of time to research 80 people.
To search for a members info go to the top of the main page to "members" you will see the drop down and click on "search member" By going threw the members postings you can often get a good idea of what he likes or may want for a bow. You might want to do something that he doesn't have instead!
Good luck with your builds and remember to have fun and enjoy the process of building a true blessing for your fellow tribal member!
-
Sorry I left you out of the moderaters list Keenan. :-[
-
;D ;D ;D No offense my friend
-
hey kennan good idean on the srech but i have a big ? for ya like gordon says id feel a heck of a lot better if i knew the persons actuall draw legth haha i know ya can find some of that info but man if each of us could make a short post for actuall draw legth it d help i know good n well most of us can hit that mark ill start off my true draw is 28 Lets hear you guys OPTIONS on that BROCK
-
Brock we started a thread just for that purpose.
-
I can fully appreciate what the committee is trying to do by making you research your recipient. That being said, the draw length is the first thing considered when picking out a stave and laying out the bow. I know in my case that can be a little confusing to figure out due to the fact that I have two different distinct shooting styles. On short bendy handle bows for hunting in the brush I snap shoot a 26" draw. When I'm standing at a line shooting targets I have a fixed anchor with 28" draw. That can be pretty confusing if not laid out plainly. But I do agree that researching your recipient is not only absolutely necessary but a big part of the fun. My goal is to make the best bow i can in a style that my recipient hasn't or wouldn't probably make for them self. That is easier with some than others. Anyway as been said, if you get in a pickle, let somebody know. Those folks that got a bow and slank off like a mangy coyote last year didn't get anything free. They gave up this community for a bent stick. I wouldn't pay that price for the finest ten bows ever posted here! I hope nobody pays that incredibly high price this year. Josh

Bub there isnt a thing wrong with boards or board lams. Making a stave bow isnt any step up. Making a well tillered, well balanced, durable bow is a step up. Get better at what your best at! A great bow is a great bow no matter what its origin.............now quit whining you old California codger and start picking out materials for my bow!
-
I know there aint nouthin' wrong with lam bows, was just thinkin' about stepping outside my comfort zone, so quit yellin' at me >:D

You guys are hilarious!
A very big THANKS to the moderators / organizers of this event. You guys are AWESOME!
I have sat these out in the past mainly due to time constraints. If I commit to something I want to make sure I follow through (going back to what Pat B was saying earlier). I don't take it lightly. I sat on the fence with this one too but my wife and my six year old daughter said I should do it. So here I am. YEAH!
The other reason I've hesitated in the past is that even though I have been doing this for a while now I still feel like I have ALOT to learn. It's a little intimidating.
I'm one that hasn't posted many bows, though I've made quite a few more than I've posted. I'll try to post them more often.
I'm looking forward to doing the research and finding out more about the person not just their prefered draw length and weight (pssst mine is 50-55 at 27"). I think it will be fun. Above all I sincerely hope I can make a bow that that person would like to have. I plan to do my best. Hope you like art on your bow! Hahaha! >:D

Dude, don't be too modest. You're bows are pretty friggin' amazing looking. Art on bows might not be everyone's cup o' tea but I'd sure be proud to show off one of your bows.

Thanks dude! I appreciate it. I'm still trying to figure out how to build in better performance. I want to make something that looks good AND shoots good too. We'll see how it goes. Should be fun.

I'm tempted to try something crazy but my rational side is saying maybe I should do something more conservative to make sure it shoots well. Either way this trade has already got me talking to myself
-
The Excitement is almost palpable...
Thank You PA, Trade Moderators and Calendargirl for making it all happen.
It's coming up on three years from the point at which my Uncle handed my a Fist Sized chunk of Bodark an said "See what you can do with this".
I still remember how Unremarkable I thought it looked...
Think I compared the color to "Baby Poo"' and thought what the heck is my uncle thinking...
He gave me a knowing smile and sent me on my way.
He was Right of course.
Once I had a finish on that small piece and saw it Glow and Shimmer in the light I was Hooked.
Another month's worth of research and I bought my First Stave of Yeller Wood.
It's been down hill from there.
Can one Man, or Woman for that matter, ever have too much Osage?
Me thinks Not!
Let The Games Begin... Y'all! :)

I've got a beautiful and nearly perfect elm stave i've been reserving for my self. But now i'm thinking someone may be getting a lovely elm recurve. ;) Now i just need to know who ;D

ooooh, me likey, maybe we'll keep that yew on the west coast >:D
-
Yeah, the east coast (which is everything east of the Sierra Nevada >:D >:D >:D) aren't allowed to use any of our Yew. They can keep all that crooked yellow stuff. ;) (except for the two or three staves I have stashed away for a rainy day).

there are 35-36 rings in the heartwood not sure about the sap wood

I hope the person that drew my name doesn't have a limited choice of just yew to play with. Yew see, yew fails in my dry climate. If I were to receive a yew bow I would cry, knowing there would come a day when I could no longer resist. I would have to string it and shoot it. And it would blow up, sure as anything.
I can think of no better wood for a bow to hunt antelope, but fated to fail from over-drying. But if yew got yew, you can get vine maple, cascara, and lots of other stuff I have never worked with, so it's all good.

I get if it's backed with sinew it won't;)
-
I keep hearing about yew not being able to handle dry climate but have a hard time believing it as I live on the edge of the high desert and have hunted with multiple yew bows for years. Never had one fail except the ones that didn't survive the tillering tree. has anyone experience with yew failing from a dry climate? If so please show stats ;D
-
The buddy I learned from has had three yew ELBs blow at various stages including one that was rawhide backed and tillered so gently you would think it was made of nitroglycerine.
-
Well Trade bow A came in under weight... starting trade Bow B... this time will be alittle less agressive on the tillering... :( :)
