I thought I had posted pics of this stave around the first of the year but I couldn't find it anywhere so her we go...
I started working on getting the bends out around Christmas when she looked like this...

Its amazing what can happen in a few short weeks. Here she is now. She's not done yet. Still needs a bit of weight reduction, I'll add a leather arrow rest and sewn leather handle wrap then do the finish work. I'm making this bow for Charlie Jefferson(stringstretcher). Charlie like a "Hill" style bow so I used a deep, narrow handle on an American Longbow style bow...with "warts and all". I still have to reduce the weight for Charlie but I will shoot her in first then tweek the draw weight/length to fit Charlie.
Here she is now...

Nice piece of wood Pat. Charlie is a lucky dude! Let me know when you list gets short enough to add my name...;)
-
Pearl, I definitely feel blessed. That will be a bow that I cherish and use a lot. Thank you again so very very much Pat. Simply beautiful. ;D
-
That wart hog is lookin' sweet.
-
Looking sweet! Can't wait to see it all dolled up.
-
Cool lookin bow Pat... warts and all :)
Don't think I've seen you do a glue up on a riser before (or maybe just gettin old)? Look great!!!
-
Ooooh, I hope them warts aren't catching :o
Del
-
Great charactered bow!
-
Nice job all around! Nice bow
-
Looking good Pat. Can't wait to see it all dolled up....warts an all, lol. Danny
-
Thanks guys. This one has lots and lots of heating and straightening and heating and bending and..well, you know. Lots of manipulation. I'm glad to see it in one piece.
Kip, it has been many years since I glued up a riser and my first attempt at a deep, Hill style handle...and like the rest of us you are getting old! ;)

Very nice. Are you going to do the leather build up for the handle this time? I am thinking of doing a leather build up after watching how you do it in a couple of your build alongs, and was wondering if you can use any type of leather? I am wondering if I can find some that will be easy to rasp and file. I got some thicker scraps I am thinking of using. I wanted to use cork, but I haven't found any yet. I think home depot has a roll of cork material, which would probably be perfect, but I don't feel like spending 20 bucks right now. ;D I'm a cheapo...
EDIT: Wait a minute, is that leather on the handle already? Or wood?
EDIT 2: Ok, reread your post, I see you are going with a deep narrow handle. I like that style of handle anymore, as the arrows fly better I think. Easier on spine.
-
TMK, I will build up a shelf on this bow with leather. At the bottom of the handle are 3 thin pieces of wood.
Oak or vegitable tanned leathers work best but any will work. You can buy the precut shoe sole replacements from a shoe shop if they still exist or saddle skirting from a saddle shop. They probably have scraps for little or nothing.
You can saturate the leather with super glue and it will rasp and scrape just like wood.
I've never used cork but I have seen it used many times.
-
Really turned out nice Pat.
Rob

That looks like a good one, Pat, even though a frog pee'd all over it. ;)

Thank you for the info, it is much appreciated! Very nice bow too, ;) Can't wait for the finished pics.

Pat,
Nice job coaxing that stave into a bow. Love the character too.

Everyone needs one of this kind of stave in their stable of staves. If you let it, it will teach you a lot about wood, its characteristics and limitations, about wood bows and about yourself. Find the most difficult stave you can imagine and make a bow out of it. Don't worry about the draw weight or how pretty it looks or how long it takes you to make it into a bow but concentrate on what is important in a wood bow; perfect tiller, making both limbs bend evenly and together. Once you learn that, there is not a stave on earth that you won't be able to make a bow from.
-
Very nice job Pat,got to love that. :)

-
Good to see ya working on some wood again pat ;) hows that stave master treating your young legs? ;D
-
The Stave Master is the bees knees! 8)

I'm loving the way that one looks, so far, Pat. I can't wait to see the finished product. I know your recipient will love it!!
-
That bow will turn some heads at a 3d shoot. Do you leave the stringing groove on the finished bow?
-
rps, I put the extra string groove in to use as a bow stringer and both grooves on each tip will stay with the bow.
-
great looking bow. i love them warts they ad a lot of character.

I always learn a lot about myself when working a stave like that. For example, how high my blood pressure is, how much an anger management class could benefit me, how wide and plentiful my vocabulary of curse words is, etc... ;D
-
very good job on a real character stave!
-
Just too cool Pat, you always make such beautiful bows, can,t wait to see the finished bow.

Seems the glove has been thrown down :)....makes me want to go out to the shop and reject shed and see what I can find. 8)

Great words of wisdom. I might just have to start on a very intimidating hawthorn stave after reading this. Can't way to see the finished bow by the way!
-
wow Can't believe I missed this one Pat. Great looking bow and for a great guy as well. Can't wait to see her all done up.
-
Well, here she is all finished up for Charlie except for a little more shooting. I think she came out pretty good. She shoots well but with a little hand shock. I think that is because one side of the bow is stiffer because of the "warts" along that side. She came out at 47#@26"(tillered to 28").
Here she is...

That old girl cleaned up real nice Pat .... amazing what a little makeup will do :)
Sweet shooter!!!
-
Thanks guys. I'm pleased with how she turned out. I hope Charlie is. ;)
-
Oo that's warty loveliness.
-
Pleased is a very big understatement Pat. I am in shock...lol. That is simple beautiful. You work has always amazed me my friend and I learn from you every time I read or hear something you say. This gift will be cherished for life, not only because of it beauty and character, but more so, because of who made it for me. I thank you so very much, and I am truly blessed and honored my friend.
-
I'll get a full draw pic up this afternoon or evening.
-
Turned out great. Good job on it Pat. I'm sure Charlie will love it.

WART PROTECTION ;D ;D ;D

I really like that stitching pattern on the grip. Braced profile looks excellent. Thanks for sharing!
-

yeah I may have to steal that stitch
-
The stitch is pretty easy and starts with a baseball stitch then bring both threads back up under the first stitching . When you get to the top start back down criscrossing the threads and under the last stitch....if that makes sence. ???
Here in another braced and the full draw pic...

Thanks Bubby.

Love that full draw shot!

-
Another nice osage bow there Pat. That one has some nice character going on, well done!
Greg
-
Thanks guys.
Ryoon, I'll see what I can come up with. I haven't done a handle wrap like this for years and the stitch is something I came up with when I got board. ;D
-
Now that right there is a work of art.
-
A timeless classic :)
-
Sweet tiller on that one Pat. I got a stave I have been ducking for a while that is all covered with those "warts". You have inspired me to stop being a wuss and try and make a bow out of it. :)
-
Thats a dandy for sure Pat. Thanks for sharing it with us. Danny
-
