This! This piece was the male piece of a stave blackhawk had and gave to me. After roughing it out at Marty's I had an epiphany as to how I would utilize the branch. I'll make it a string bridge! So even after a couple long days of bow making I worked on this thing all day Sunday and finally got it finished up... I think. Even after a bunch of pulls and shots, while taking the full draw pic the string bridge tip broke off on me! I immediately went and glued it back on, wrapped it tight and thick with B-50, and soaked it in super glue. Held for the second full draw pick and took a few more shots but we'll see how it holds up. I may also add another leather pad on the back of the limb where there's a lot of contact and maybe add a string bridge to the recurve. So anyways here's the stats. 51" ntn and 38#@24" but I short draw it out of fear. The bottom limb is about 16" to the branch and the top is about 28" from the tip to the arrow pass. The string bridge overlay is bone and there's a leather pad on the back of the upper limb to keep the string from sliding around. The handle is built up with foam sandal material. Both strings are B-50. I inlayed some brass bar into the knot just for looks as the long one does not go up into the overlay. Believe it or not the bow actually shoots pretty well. At the moment I've seen that it does well with the back string just barely taught before stringing. I'm sure I could tighten it up a bit by my worries are that the string bridge may fail again and adding more tension puts a lot more stress on the belly. This bow really made me think about cable backed bows as I imagine a well designed one could have greatly reduced mass. I have more thoughts on this bow and the designs but I better wrap up this long winded response. Thanks for looking!

Now that's different, ;) cool looking bow. :)
Pappy

Congratulations on the most awesome firewood resurrection bow! Love the way you thought outside of the normal and used the natural ability of the stave.
-
That's pretty darn neat! There's no way I would have seen a bow in that piece of wood. Nicely done!
-
if thats not the most awesome bow ive ever seen i dont know what is!
-
:o :o :o :o That is quite the accomplishment there. 8) Ryan, I am looking forward to what you do with that cable design on the next bow.
-
That is funky. Now I have to bring it up. Could you have pulled that off with a piece of poplar >:D
-
That is one freakish looking bow, but man is it cool. Talk about getting stares from the wheelie bow users at the 3D match.
Grady
-
Your nutz man! I didnt see that one coming when I seen that split on the floor. Great work doc.
-
Thanks guys! This thing seems to shoot well enough that it'll be what I carry around at shoots and such (although I rarely do much shooting).
Carson, Idk how soon the next one will come up but I already have some designs in mind. ;D
osage outlaw, Of course! Everyone knows poplar is the best wood. It's just too easy so there's no challenge. ;)
Pearlie, I get crazy visions after an exhaustive day of bow making.
-
Innovative. Great accomplishment and cool looking......!
-
You took hawkey poo's crazy bow crown..............looks like he has some work to do?
-
OMG!!!! LMFAO      ;D
Looks like I gave that stave to the right person... ;)
-
You son spend way to much time dreaming bows !!
But I like it !!
May have to try one myself !!
That was not even good firewood when last I saw it !!
Guy
-
By the way..that's gotta be one of coolest unique full draws I've seen in a looooooooong time
-
It's a bit like the old question...
What do you get if you cross an Elephant with a Rhino?
Del
-
Very cool bow, Ryoon
-
Thanks guys!
Guy, I thought the same thing when I saw it but the craziness kicked in I guess.
Chris, I couldn't have done it if you hadn't generously gift me the piece! I really appreciate it man! :)
-
Wow, that's way out! :o :-X ;D Truly, really coooooooool.
BUT. I't's been said that b50 may have some elasticity issues. But it's not THAT bad, is it?. You should make a sinew cable, really.
Just let me say once again: That is pretty cool.
-
wow is that cool! Although it makes my head hurt if i look at it too long :) i couldn't imagine tillering that thing.
-
I have no words. :o It's cool whatever it is, :).
-
What a good excersize in non linear thinking :) well done! That's pretty dern cool if u ask me 8)
-
Umm.....what the??? Dude...... that's the wildest, craziest, most outrageous, couldn't be any further out of the box thought up piece of deranged engineering that I have ever seen!!! :o. In other words, thats unimaginably cool!!! 8) how's it shoot? Josh
-
That is too damn cool. Holy Smokes!! I love the recurved upper limb. 8) 8) 8)
Gabe
-
Really interesting conception!! I looked at all the pic's before reading the details and thought you'd utilised a bone comb! After reading it's brass, I'm even more itrigued at how you managed to get it to work and to look so uniform!
Incredible project!
-
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it!
Jodocus, The back string is extremely taught at brace and even more so during the draw. It must stretch a little bit but I think it really forces the bow to compress a lot. I think a more elastic string would be better for the wood since it would stress it less.
Josh, It actually shoots pretty darn well considering it's light draw weight. I need to get some light arrows for it and I'll just use it as a mess around target bow.
-
Ryan: Hats off to you! That's using the ol' noodle. If you come over, bring it with you. Gotta see it in person.
Matt ;)
-
that is superb , i wouldnt of even known where to start tillering that one :o. well done.
-
That has too be the most original bow I have ever seen! Definitely should be hung on the wall by your front door.
-
Del, I give up? What do you get crossing an elephant and a rhino?
-
Bravo, Ryan!
-
Del, I give up? What do you get crossing an elephant and a rhino?
'ell-if-I-know >:D
Del
-
You deserve a medal for that one...too cool.
-
that is one cool freak of nature.awesome work.it is definitly the most interesting bow i have seen lately
-
A cable backed Recyumi! Another awesome bow Ryan. Certainly the most unique one I've seen, maybe ever. Well done :)
Kip

Can't comment on this yet, still struggling to get my pea sized brain to comprehend what it is exactly I'm looking at. ??? ??? ???
Way cool Ryan, wouldn't have come up with that in a thousand years myself.
Greg
-
Thanks guys! You're all too kind. I think I might have to start harvesting staves with big branches in the middle! That way I can actually plan for this design instead of forcing it to work out. >:D
Matt, I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it this week but we'll see. I'm sure I'll be bringing this thing everywhere I go from now on so you'll see it eventually! ;D
Del, Classic joke and very fitting for this bow.
-
Wait, your telling me that the thing actually shoots? >:D That is one crazy looking freaking cool bow Ryan. Great Job.
Jon
-
Jon, You tell me!
Someone on PP asked to see a video so you could see how it moves during the draw. You can see I added another leather pad on the back of the limb and also a small string bridge on the recurve. The tape on the arrows is at 22" and I'm clearly drawing less than that, probably closer to 19", mostly out of fear. Ha. The arrows I'm shooting are just under 400 grains. The noise from the first one is a loose fletching but otherwise the bow is pretty quiet I think. Gosh I love this thing!

I knew you were cooking up something, but this.....? That is one wild looking bow! great job
-
Outstanding Ryan, absolutly outstanding ! Bob
-
I would have thought twice about even burning that never mind making a bow from it!
Stunning job.
-
Thanks guys!
Cody, I didn't even know this was coming when I left Marty's!
-
Wow...awesome freakin bow. If you come to MOJAM this year, can you bring it?
-
Very reminiscent of the Hidatsa bow (featured in PA , some time ago ) ... one we’ve certainly been wanting to try ... 8)
-
Thanks Patches. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be making it to MOJam this year as I start med school in June but I'll be bringing it everywhere else before then.
gpw, can't say I've seen that one but I'll look it up. Got anymore info on it?
-
At first I was going to say this looked like a bow designed by a committee made up of Washington bureaucrats. But they couldn't create something this functional. This bow actually shoots!!!
Great work!
-
Thanks JW! ;D
-
What the????!?!?!?!????!?!!!!!???????. :o. ???............. (Three hours later) .....wow...That's awesome man.....just awesome........wow
-
Are we sure this counts as a bow?
-
OMG!!! That is seriously messed up!! LOL!! But... somehow... it works. It kinda grows on you. That is definitely thinking outside the box. I look at my bows after looking at that, and the only word I can think of is... boring.
-
Arrowind, Thanks... I think?
Newindian, It shoots arrows and I draw the string with my hand. What else would you call it?
adb, It really does! I'm definitely going to try and make another one some time in the future. The extra work is totally worth it.
-
Belongs in the museum of modern art. Way to post something different
-
I'll never look at a weird piece of wood in contempt again! totally awesome bow. you should take it to an archery range and film people's reactions when they see it!
-
loefflerchuck, Thanks! I'll have to make a ton of them so future civilizations will think there was some sort of significance! >:D
Rufledt, Thank you! I was thinking about doing that at the archery range at the university. Although I'm pretty sure my friends wouldn't be surprised seeing me walk through the door with it.
-
Just got to see this one too Ryan. That is a very cool bow!
I read where you won't make it to MOJAM this year due to med school... Now I understand why you are spending the winter making bows. ;)
Hey, send your sister as your "proxy" to MOJAM this year and she can build another bow. ;D
-
Thanks Paul! That's not a bad idea. I think she had a good time last year. If she went this year without me and made a bow I'd definitely be super proud! ;D
-
Ryoon , the Hidatsa bow was featured in an article in Primitive Archer magazine Volume 3 , Issue 4 , page 26 , entitled appropriately enough “Hidatsa Archery” ... by Ron Taillon The asymmetrical bow is supposed to have better arrow flight and is “tuned’ by moving the hand position up or down till it shoots best ...
Ps , it was also used occasionally as a Club ... :o
I’m making a “test bow” now from PVC (not exactly primitive ::) ) just to try out before we cut wood ...
-
Ok that's pretty cool 8)
-
A mess... That's what you get is a mess ;) Congratulations that is something else!
-
Very cool. I'd never even heard of a yumi bow until today. That is definitely going on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing, this one is going on my favorites list.
-
Thanks guys!
gpw, Thanks! I'll look it up.
-
Guys , i made an experimental Hidatsa type bow out of PVC (Apologies , not exactly Primitive) and it works GREAT .... Shoots Nice and flat , no hand shock ... Feels good in the hand ...
We’re eyeing up some Ash in the yard for harvesting (I live in a hardwood forest) ... Gonna’ make a wooden one this time ... same way the Hidatsa made it ...
Although i had my doubts , no more .... these bows shoot really NICE !!!
Ps,. the arrow shoots 4” below bow center...
-
ryoon.....you have created the most awesome thing I have ever seen, keep up the good work ;D
