Title: A central KY mini bowyer get together
Post by: hedgeapple on February 06, 2013, 10:35:10 am
Some of you might have read on the Louisville KY thread that I've offered to host a mini-gathering March 22, 23 and 24.  I thought I would expanded the invitation to the rest of this community.  It won't be anything fancy like Twin Oaks, just some bow building and knapping and bs-ings.  We might fling an arrow or 2 at some 3-D target, also.

If you're interested in coming drop me a line and I'll you directions.
Dave

Come on down Ozzy.  You'll fit in just fine.  Seems like every time I have guests over to work on bows, I break one. haha  So, bring your safety glasses.

A friend loaned me three 3-D targets today; a buck, a doe, a cougar and an antelope.  I have a bedded buck and wild boar.  So, that's 6 targets.  If I set them up with a shooting station on each side, that will give us 12 stations.  Looks like a beginning of a shoot.  We could put $5 in the pot with winner take all, just to make it more interesting.  Being the host, I won't shoot for the money.  But, I will shoot. :)

Looks like about 8 people so far and the number seems to be growing daily, now.  It should be lots of fun.  I bought a new vice, so we'll have 4 work stations, plus a stave horse.  I'll have 2 tillering trees set up and a couple tillering sticks just in case.

I'm getting excited.
Dave

Dave, I might be able to make it.  I'm supposed to work that weekend but I might be able to switch with somebody.  I can bring my bench.  Do you have a spot I could throw out a tent if the weather warms up some?

Clint, it would be great if you could make down.  Yep there's 50 acre, just pick a spot for you tent anywhere.  I also, have a guest cottage with a bed upstairs and downstairs, and a camper.

I got the tractor out for the first time today to mow the 3-d course.  So, of course there's some tractor issues to deal with.  The freeze plug has blown out the side of the engine.  It's an easy fix, but I don't have one laying around.  I will pick one up tomorrow then back to work.

Oh darn, I have to go to Plan B for the day--Cutting a hackberry and some osage.  :)  :)

Danzn, we'd love to have you join us for the crazy bowyer fun.  I'd love a stick or two of hickory.  I used my last piece a couple months ago, making a bow for a friend.  I kinda feel naked without some hickory in my stave pile.  So, bring whatever you feel like hauling.

A friend who is not a bowyer, YET, is bringing some osage from his farm.  I built him a HBO several years ago.  We always do Sept. primitive archery hunt together.  Some other folks are bringing staves and stones to play with.

This little event is shaping up quite well.  And if Pappy, Osage Outlaw and GMC can make it, we'll have a good number of experience bowyers to share their knowledge.  I think it going to be a hoot.

Wow, blackhawk your attendance would be a welcomed surprise.  I didn't think you would consider coming this far for a weekend.  But, it would be great if you made the trip.  I should be ready to work on the hhb you gave me by then.  You could teach me the ropes for working with "white gold"  :)

Blackhawk, you know from previous conversations that you're welcome at my place anything.  So, coming a couple days earlier is no problem.  Heck, you'd have 2 bows done before anyone else got here.  Or every osage on the place cut and split.  :)  As far as your wife concerns, Maria says wine and chocolate is a good bribe.   ;)  I hope you can make it work.

Ozzy, it's my pleasure.  I'm pretty darn excited about the gathering, too.

Wow, my calendar says it 3 weeks until our gathering.  Time to get some serious planning going.

I'm cooking main course for dinner Friday and Saturday.  I'm thinking wild boar lasagne one night and venison roast the other.  So I need to get a head count of who's coming and when.

Right now I have these people coming:
Ozzy plus 1
Danza Bar
Gsulfridge
Oscar
DLH plus 1
Osage Outlaw
Blackhawk

Maybe list:
Pappy
GMC
Tracy
Briarjumper12
Seabass plus 1

Great news Blackhawk!

I've found that if I want to get away for a while, I'll be real clingy to the wife.  I'll follow her all around the house, follow her outside, and just stay real close to her.  It don't take long before she says why don't you go work in the garage or go golfing or something.  Works every time  ;)

Dave, what do I need to bring?  I plan on getting down there Friday evening around 8:30 or maybe earlier.

Kip, my osage supply has dwindle down to knotty stuff or I'd offer you a stave trade.  If the only reason you're not coming is because of lack of a stave to work on, you might be able to trade something to one of guys who's coming.

Clint and others, bring your own snacks and breakfast items.  I'll probably put something together in that department as well.  But, I want to make sure I spend more time in the shop and shootings some than I do in the kitchen.  :)  Also bring your own drinks.  I'm a coffee, water, beer kind of guy.  Rarely, are there sodas on place.

I think I have enough 3-D targets for a fun little shoot.

Bring normal camping stuff.  If it is cold and you don't want to stay in a tent, I find indoor accommodations for you.  So, I cot might be a good idea.

Bring whatever you want to work on.  Some folks have talked of knapping, also.  Bring tools you normally would bring to a bowyer gathering.  For example, I only have one draw knife, so extra draw knive might be good to have.

If anyone has a stave horse they could bring, that might be useful.  I have one stave horse and one primary vice and 2 other vices on different benches.  CLAMPS we can never have too many clamps.

I'll have an indoor tiller tree and an outdoor tiller tree set up.  I plan to make a tiller stick or 2, just in case.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
Dave

I might be able to make it for a day, having a 2 year old and another on it's way makes a weeekend event a challenge for me!

If I do, I'll bring you some of that maple we discussed.

Thanks for offering the get together.

Stoney Run, what part of the county is that?  I haven't mapquested it yet.  Are you aware of the archery range on Central KY Wildlife Management Area?

Wapiti, that would be great.  I'm about 4 miles fro Fort Boonesboro.

Ozzy, that sounds great.  I have 2 car shed built on the side of my workshop.  So it would be easy to attach a tree to either wall.

Clint and Ozzy, the benches sound great.  This is going to be lots of fun.

Sure Hawky, if that's what makes you happy.  But with little golden curls floating softly to the floor joining an ankle deep pile of their friends, I bet you'd knaw through any ropes we used to tie you to your recliner.  haha  It would be like a bizzard of cocain falling on a crackhead. You'd go insane.  haha haha

cool would be awesome to come if you wouldn't mind. Still gotta check my schedule though. So happy I'm finding people close to me that are into this stuff. I am extremely new to the primitive arts but I am loving learning how to do this stuff. If anyone here is interested I am trying to get a small club or group together to get together like this or give each other advice and stuff in or around the Louisville, KY area.
Email me at LouisvillePTS@gmail.com or like the facebook page I made called "Louisville Primitive Technology Society" if anyone is interested. Not looking to be a serious club just a way to get together with people of the same interest.

Now don't make fun of my FB bow!  I gave the bowyer red elm, KY coffeetree, honey locust, and persimmon to craft this jewel.  It also has a piece of a KY elk shed imbedded in the riser.

I already have a handicap.  All of this osage peeling I've been doing for the last few months has torn something in my shoulder.  I can't even talk on the phone wihtout the pain seizing me up!

It's gonna suck that I ever get to making bows and am too crippled to shoot one of them!

Wapiti, sorry to here about your shoulder.  Remind me to introduce you to my electric draw knife.  ;)

Electric draw knife??? You guys give me crap about my FB bow! I have half a mind to bring 20 hours worth of maclura pomifera that still needs skinning just to see this fancy draw knife in action... :)

All kidding aside, I can chase a ring quicker than I can get the sapwood off..  I have in some instances simply split the wood at the first few heartwood rings to get rid of the sapwood.  Green, to me it seems the sapwood is much harder than the heartwood. The heartwood flakes off like fish scales, the sapwood more like cold coyote skin....

I shot about 50 arrows 3 weeks ago to test drive my last osage bow.  The time before that was before Christmas when I shot in a hickory bow.  So, my skills as an archer (not that I have many to begin with) will not be something that legends are made of.  BUT, I'm off work for the next 3 days, hopefully I'll get some shooting in then as projects allow.

Projects for the next 3 days:
Repairs on the greenhouse (honey do)
Kill some chickens for the freezer (honey do)
Replace a freeze plug in the tractor.
Use said tractor and bushhog to layout the 3-D course.
Start and finish a red oak board bow for the red oak board bow trade.
Layout to floor tiller osage trade bow.
Then if there's time:
cut some firewood, maybe cut a BL and/or an osage.  Start straightening up the place, guest are coming in a couple of weeks.  :)

Hey BearG, I saw your post on the Classic thread about supplies from Tandy in Cinnci causing me to remember that you're in that area.  I made a mental note to send you a PM about this event, but you found it before I could do so.  :)

The gathering is March 22 to 24.  We have 50 acres, just pick a spot for your camper.

BearG, I hope you make down, also.

I bush hogged the 3-D course today.  I tried to lay it out at various hunt ranges.  I think the longest shot will be around 27 yards and the shortest about 10 yards.  I tried to clear away enough brush so I can find my arrows when I miss the whole creature.  haha

I decided to do some shooting today.  I had forgotten that I was getting short on target arrows.  I had 1.  Well, the first shot the knock broke off on that one.  I guess I need to get some arrows made.

I'm glad you mentioned the arrows Dave.  That reminded me I need to get a few finished up so I have something to shoot down there.

Is anyone going to have a caul at this?  I'd like to see one before I make one. I even have a black locust stave whittled down, it might make a bow, it's a little crooked after reducing, but I don't know what I'm doing.  It is from a dead tree of 20 or so years, I split it and put it away last summer.

I have a caul that puts about 2 to 2 1/2 reflex.  We can rig up something I'm sure.

I cut some firewood today, so we can keep the workshop as toasty as we can stand it.  I set out the 3-d targets.  Things are coming along.  I didn't shoot the course, darkness over took me.  Maybe I fling an arrow or two this weekend.

One more week for me  8)

What if everyone tried to bring a 3d target n make a longer course? Mines pretty shot out tho?  ::)
Title: Re: A central KY mini bowyer get together
Post by: hedgeapple on March 14, 2013, 10:45:16 pm
Sure the more target the more fun.  Shot out is fine with me.  I usually hit them in the rump anyway, when I hit them at is.  :)

Anyone bring a target please let me know in advance so I can bushhog an area for it.  Otherwise, any missed targets will result in a lost arrow.

Hawky, I'm looking forward to it.  I figure you and I will grab a chainsaw and take a stroll around the farm early Friday morning before anyone else arrives.  ;)

I still need to do a cleaning of the honeymoon cottage for you and Outlaw.  haha

BTW, Schuy, my wife is teaching a course in Lexington that weekend.  She decided getting a hotel room there would work well for her.  So we have the whole place for a guys weekend, other than the exotic dancers who are coming over Saturday.   >:D

Clint, I have block target.  It's a bit "weathered" but it still stops and arrow.  If you get here and we're not at the house, listen for the chainsaw or call me.  I'll keep my cell phone on me.  859-582-2603.

I think I've posted my address, already, but here it is again:
565 Stoney Run Rd
Richmond, KY 40475
If you're using mapquest remember TURN RIGHT into the gravel driveway when it saids you're here.

Directions might help, also:
Since most of you are coming from the north, I'll give directions from that point of view.
Take I-75 south to exist 95.  If coming from the south take I-75 north to exit 95.
Turn on hwy 627 toward Winchester.  Those coming from the north turn left.  Those coming from the south turn right.
Go about 3 miles, you'll see a sign for hwy 3377.  Slow down it comes ups quickly.
Turn right on 3377.
3377 crosses a railroad track then T's to a stop
Turn left at the T and go about 3 more miles.
Stoney Run Rd is on the right.  Turn onto Stoney Run Rd.
Go about 2.5 miles out Stoney Run. You'll see a large white metal building with an antique John Deere on a dirt ramp in front of it. Go to the next driveway and turn RIGHT.  There's a large black mailbox with 565 on the left side of the road across from my driveway.  Turn RIGHT in front of the mailbox.  If you haven't gotten it yet, my driveway is on the RIGHT.
The driveway is 1/2 mile long.  You won't see the house from the road.

To all the new bowyers going to Dave's, is there anything in particular that you would like to see a demonstration on?  I'm going to bring the stuff to put snake skins on a bow if anyone wants to see how its done, or at least how I do it.  If there is something else you want to see let us know.  I'm sure Blackhawk wouldn't mind helping out as well.

Don't expect to start and finish a bow in one weekend.  I'm pretty darn slow with this process.  What I'm looking forward to learning is how to speed up the layout to floor tillering stage of the process.  That's the part of bow building that I agonize over for the most.

I'm going to make a pot of hide glue and re-sinew a bow.  I'll probably do a demo on my not so primitive method of making a 2-fletched arrow from a bamboo tomato stake.  I have a hhb I got from Blackhawk lat Classic.  I'm hoping he'll give me some pointers on maybe turning that one into a r/d bow.  To my eye, I think that's what the hhb wants to be.

Dave do you have a bandsaw? Beltsander? That speeds up the process big time....n what do you mean not to expect to have a bow made in a weekend?  ???
Title: Re: A central KY mini bowyer get together

I have a Porter/Cable bandsaw with 6" throat.  I' believe it's 1 1/2 hp.  I have a 36" belt sander.  Oh, I might get a bow finished this weekend.  l have 4 in various stages of completion.  My biggest desire is to work on the hhb while you're here.

I just checked the weather for the gathering weekend.  It looks nice, ZERO chance of percipitation, highs mid-40's lows in the 30's.  I call that a good forecast.  Anyone sleeping in a tent might need to bring a warm sleeping bag, but I've camped in much colder weather.  If it's a bit to friggid for you, I can find a place indoors for you.  There's a twin bed in my office (a man needs a place to knap in the his man cave, doesn't he.), a comfy futon couch and chair in the livingroom.  My camper could sleep 2 pretty easily.  I put an electric heater in it.  And, there'll be plenty of floor space.

I've only broken one arrow in the 4 years I've been doing this craziness and that was a footed arrow.  The foot broke.  I use bamboo tomato stakes from Lowe's.  Those thing are indistructable.  And pretty forgiving as far as spine is concerned.  They're cheap, also, about $1 a piece.
Title: Re: A central KY mini bowyer get together
Post by: osage outlaw on March 18, 2013, 03:18:25 pm
Same here Dave.  Only broke one bamboo arrow when I hit some roots in a creek bed.  It split the shaft in half before it broke.  I have hit trees dead center and didn't hurt them.  I'll open a few packages of stakes and do a quick spine test in the store.  I'll mix and match a few stakes to get a good batch.  As long as I have the correct number in there when I'm done they don't seem to mind.
Title: Re: A central KY mini bowyer get together
Post by: blackhawk on March 18, 2013, 07:40:10 pm
One was a carbon...n the other was a cane shaft....it happened from shooting a bow in...I dont pay too much attention to accuracy when shooting one in...and they've smacked my railroad tie retaining wall behind my target ten too many times..lol.

N now it looks like I won't have time to make some new ones up...might have to make some up down there  ::)
Title: Re: A central KY mini bowyer get together
Post by: hedgeapple on March 18, 2013, 08:05:39 pm
Clint, the Lowes around here sale the tomato stakes individually.  So I just stand there and sort through all of them.  I usually bring home 10 to 15.  And there's 5 Lowes store within a thirty minute drive of me.  Whenever I'm near one, I stop by and buy more.

Chris, you make some here.  I find late night is the best time make arrow.  There's no power tools involved to hamper drinking.  And, I'm usually tired of scraping one a bow anyhow.  I have a fletching jig, hot flat steel to flatten nodes and secret little jig to straighten the bamboo.  It used to take me about 2 hours to straight a shaft, now I can do it in about 20 minutes.  And half that time is waiting on section to cool enough so I can hold it to bend another section.  The waiting time is where the beer comes in.  ;)

Will do Dave...I already have 3 matched sets already spine matched n straight(cane, shun doo,n something else?) From various trades...just gotta cut self nocks, taper n glue heads,n glue feathers....n I got heads n feathers.... so it shouldn't take too long to whip out a half dozen to get me thru the weekend ;)....hope the weathers gonna be better than here right now...were getting freezing rain right now...yuck....limbs sagging n falling everywhere

Post by: hedgeapple on March 19, 2013, 12:43:15 am
Clint, the 10 pack is probably cheaper, but I'd rather pay a little more and get what I want or think I want.  haha

Chris, sounds like you're thru the hard part of arrow makin' already.  The weather is a little nasty here today.  Rain mostly.  It's supposed to clear up and be mid-50's on Friday.  A little cooler on Saturday with a chance of rain.  All in all not bad for March.

A.M Leonard out of OH sells bulk premium Tonkin in 3/8 by 36" and 48" for $50 shipped. 500 or so in a bundle. I've had real good luck with them and I can sort them at home. I got some spring special a few years ago and had them shipped for $40. That will last me a while ;D

Is anyone bringing food items for a pitch in or anything like that? Just wondering.

Hey Dave,
I'm planning on being there Saturday morning, and camping in the back of my truck that night.  I'll bring dutch oven apple cobbler, how many do you expect will be there  Saturday?

Being a beginner, I'll be doing a lot of listening and watching the shavings fly.  I'll also have a couple of pignut hickory staves for ya.  I haven't shot in some time, so I'll enjoy doing a little of that.

Thanks
Bill

I"m going to cook the venison and vegetable roast on Friday,  So it there's any left over, I'll turn it into soup for a snack on Saturday.

Saturday's meal will be wild boar lasagne.

I put up signs around the 3-D course this evening.  And well, I just had to shoot the course afterward.  Of a possible 132, I scored 70.  So, the high score and the score to beat.  haha  I'm sure that number won't stand long.

The course is pretty realistic distances.  I believe the closest is around 10 yards and the longest is 27 yards.  It was fun and good to shoot again.  I actually shot much better than I expected to do.

I put up a sign at the driveway "BOWYERS------>"

Chris arrived around 8PM today.  He gave me back a piece of osage that I found cut on my farm last year.  We've own the farm for 12 years and I didn't cut it.  So, it was at 12 years old.  Well, it looks much better now than it did then.  I can't wait to shoot it tomorrow.  If you guys are good, might let you touch it.  ;)

Should be some pics in a day or two. Despite the chicken karma I'm having a great time. There has been a lot of swapping of goods down here

It was great to meet a few of the folks from PA!  Thanks Dave for hosting the event!

Here's a few pics"

Hedgeapple found this set of sheds, then promised them to the first person to hit the bedded buck from the house... I tried and tried.... Blackhawk whittled a purdy bow from a rotten log recovered from the Moontree farm many moons ago.. presented it to Dave and dang if he didn't hit that 100+ yard bedded buck with the first try from it.  Shows you what  a guy can do to keep his hands on a nice rack!

The bowmaking and knapping was neat to see, but for some reason I keep thinking about an apple cobbler and dutch oven!  That was impressive!  ;)  Enjoyed it folks, I wish I coulda hung around longer.  Sorry if I asked too many questions!

It was a real good time and thanks for hosting Dave! Next time I will leave my knapping stuff at home and bring my bows and staves. As always, a real pleasure to put faces with names. I'm with Joe on that Dutch oven apple cobbler, great stuff Bill!

Why DID the chicken cross the road? 8)

Had an awesome time, Dave! I appreciate your hospitality as a host. You sure put on a nice event. The food was outstanding and the fellowship with all the talented bowyers (and knapper, Tracy) was great. Seeing Blackhawk, Osage Outlaw, Seabass, Ozzy, and the rest of the guys from PA work their magic was something to behold. Even getting my butt kicked on the range by Joe (wapiti) was fun.  :'(I'm counting down the days to the next one.

I made it home this afternoon with some wet wood but dry tools.  Thanks for having us Dave.  You hosted a very nice gathering.  I had a great time even though I spent as much time in the bathroom as I did the bow shop  :P  Dave's cooking and Bill's dutch oven cobbler sure smelled good.   The 3-d course was a blast to shoot.  Sorry I didn't get to spend any time with you guys that showed up late Friday night.  It was nice to see some familiar faces and make some new friends.  I enjoyed watching Blackhawk and DLH go crazy splitting some stubborn osage logs.  Ozzy worked all weekend on a sideways banana bow.  It was straight as an arrow by the time he left.  DLH had his BL stave looking more like a bow when he was done.  All it needs now is a little tillering and that piercing installed.  Joe is one heck of a shot on anything under 100 yards.  I wish I had seen Dave's long range killshot.  You all know where I was when that happened.  Greg it was nice to spend some time working with you yesterday.  With as nice of job as you did on that bow I can't wait to see what you can do with some seasoned osage.  Tracy and Leslie, it was nice seeing you guys again.  I'm looking forward to shooting a round with you and Derik in a few weeks.  Seabass brought his collection of bows.  That one from Keenan was beautiful.  Blackhawk, I enjoyed making some shavings with you again.  You sure ended up with a nice van load of wood.  There was a lot of trading of goods this weekend.  I think everyone went home with some goodies.  I know I did.

I didn't get as much done as I wanted to.  I thinned a few limb tips, skinned a bow, and started working on a piece of ancient osage.  I finally perked up Saturday night and got a ring chased to the handle.  Thanks for cutting it out for me Chris.

I only got a few pictures.

Thanks again for putting this on Dave.  I hope we can do it again next year.

I'm glad to see everyone made it home safety.  My estimates is Blackhawk should be arriving home shorty.  Although, hauling that much osage in his van might slow him down a bit.

Well, I had a BLAST!!!  It was probably the easiest event I've ever hosted.  I told everyone to make themselves at home and they did.  I didn't feel like I was "hosting" anything.  Everyone was so self-sufficient. All I did was walk around chatting with folks.

I don't think I've ever seen so much trading and gifting in such a small area.  Everytime I turned around someone was handing someone something.  Blackhawk arrived with a van full of osage and left with a larger van full of different osage and assorted other wood species.

About 5 PM Saturday foks started coming up to asking the same question, "Are we going to do this again next?"  Well, it was too much fun to do it only once :) Heck yell, let's do this gathering again.

Man................. what an experience, loved every minute of it!  Thanks again Dave, you've got to make this an annual thing.  I learned more in one day than I ever could by myself.  Next year, if you have it  :),  I'll have a bench, work on a bow and stay a LOT longer. I just got through making a cane straighting jig and straighten out 4 shafts in half the time I usually do.  You were right, thanks for the tip!!!

Blackhawk, your a true craftsman making bows, AMAZING is about all I can say.  Those were some beautiful bows you had.  I assume you finished that one today you started this weekend, did ya?

Osage Outlaw, Glad your feeling better, you've got your work cut out for you on that old stave you started.  Please post some pic's of any progress or bring it to the Classic.

Ozzy,  my wife looked at this post saw pictures of you and thought you were the country singer Zach Brown.  ;D  Wanted to know if you played any music ......Ever hear of that?

Gsulfridge,  Thanks so much for the osage stave, never seen rings "so nice"....................................

Wapiti, please post some pic's of that bow you were working one love to see the progress.

Tracy, definitely going to look you up at the Classic a talk a little more about some hunting points for this fall hunting, thanks for stirring up my juices about starting to knapp >:D all I need is another hobby.  Tell your wife the dip and chips hit the spot!

Seabass, Good talk'n to ya,  great stories!

Oh,  I almost forgot ;),  That was a moment to remember.......first shot at 100+ yards with the Blackhawk bow,  great shot Dave!

Thanks again all, and hope to see everyone again,  Holler at me if you see me at the Classic and I'll do the same.

Tracy

I promise I hadn't.  Even it I practiced it probably would not have help on multiple levels, one I wouldn't have had arrows to shoot with this week. Second I was shooting with my new bow, gift from Hawky.

But I've been thinking about the luck and karma of that shot.  Here's what I've come up with.  I found that osage log in a ditch on my farm last year and brought to the Classic.  I gave it to the first person who looked crazy enough to try to make a bow from it.  That was Chris, who was working on some twisty, hole in the limb bow.  Well, he gave it back to me Thursday.  I'm thinking that piece of wood was so happy to be home, that it just wanted to show off.

Brian said something when he was leaving to the effect, "This is some pretty interesting stuff. I may have to try a bow."  I hope he does.  He's a pretty talented woodworker/carver.  I think he could make the transition quite easily.  He was impressed that, "everyone tolerated his stupid questions."  He might be reading this himself.  I sent him this link and the other one about the gathering.  He did read thru them a couple days ago.  I suggested highly that he join the PA forum and explained about the knapping room.  We'll see.

Came across this osage when I was looking for knapping rock yesterday.  That's my rock hammer on the limb.  It's 11 inches long.  I estimated the tree to be 26 inches in diameter.

Tell Chris if he can cut it and load it in that van he can have it!
