Here is a bow I built for my friend. When I started building bows he let me borrow his band saw for 5 or 6 months. I thought it would be cool to make him a bow. I built it over a year ago…well I guess it’s been almost two years. Wow time flies! It’s sad to say that it’s been sitting in my closet waiting to be finished.
The top limb has his last name “Owens” written on it. The bottom has his first initial “R” for Rob. The Scottish lion is also drawn there. I added some Celtic knots to frame the words and create some kind of boarder.
Now after so much time has passed I pick it up and can see all my mistakes and am almost embarrassed to give it to him. It has a hinge in each limb (more pronounced in the top limb) It is a little whip tillered when it should probably be more circular. (I tapered the thickness rather than keeping it even.)
The other kind of bummer thing is that when I finally decided to pull it out of my closet and FINISH IT ALREADY I decided to clean all the dust off of it and thought it would be a good idea to wipe it down with alcohol. NOT a good idea. I had all the artwork done (in ink)…..and well it smeared. Fortunately I only smeared the top limb and I caught it before I did too much damage. It’s still painful after having spent so much time on that part of it.
I don’t mean to be overly negative. It still shoots pretty well and I think he will probably like it.
Hickory
66 inches TTT
43lbs @ 29
The handle is leather stitched with red B50.
Finished with wipe on poly
Thanks for look’n

Wow! beautiful as always. Do you free hand all your stuff or do you trace from a template?
-
Great bow and absolutely beautiful artwork!
-
Awesome! That is a beautiful bow.

I bet he loves it! Cool bow. How did you do the art work?
mwosborn - thanks! I did the art on this one by creating a template - transfering it to the bow - by applying graphite to the back of the design (on paper) then tracing over it. This leaves your design on the bow in pencil. then I traced / colored with ink. I use fine tipped pens that are supposed to be smear proof and fade resistant.

That is so cool.... that scottish art is awesome! bet he loves it!!

Don, Snow, Ozzy - thanks!
Knapper - I hoping by buddy will be hanging it on HIS wall. :D Thanks!
Weylin - Hey man, thanks! I usually free hand the work on paper first then scan it into my computer clean it up or make changes and print it out to use as my template then transfer / trace to the bow and go from there. this way It's easier to correct mistakes because I'm doing it on paper first. Having a copy on my PC allows me to print out another template If I somehow screw up the first one. This helps becuase it sucks to only have the original if something happens to it and you need it! Been there and it's frustrating! Thanks agian! I really apprecaite it.
Adam, hrhodes - Thanks!

Hey Zion - thanks! I hope he does.

The artwork on your bow is absolutely amazing!!! The rest of it is awesome, too.

Having Owens as my last name, and having been told it is Welsh in origin, I believe this is close enough in location within the Brittish Isles to be perfectly acceptable to your friend. Actually, if he turns his nose up at it this Owens would be glad to accept it.
Very impressive artwork you've put into this bow.

Now that's a real fine piece of work! That red really pops!! 8)

adb - Thanks! I really appreciate it! I admire your bows quite a bit so it's nice to get your opinion.
Christophero - thanks! at first i was trying to find a coat of arms or something and I found a few but just wasn't sure which one to use. I asked his wife about it and she told me his ancestors are from Scottland so I decided to go with the Scottish Lion. Also it seems the colors good have just as well been green but I asked her about that too and she said he likes red. She has no idea why I was asking her this stuff. She must of thought I was a little weird! Hahhaha!
lesken2011 - thanks! I appreicate it.

Wow that thing is amazing, the art work is stunning. The bow its self is a work of art but you took it over the top.

Thanks for the info Arrowind. That is some serious patience!

I would like to echo everyones elses compliments. The artwork is beautiful and looks painstakingly tedious. He better like it or he deserves a good thrashing. I see what you mean on the tiller. I thought I was the only one that had made a pyramid bow with an eliptical tiller, lol. I'm sure it'll serve him fine and at the very least it is an exquisite work of art that anyone would be proud to have in the arsenal. Danny

Hey Don! We could be cousins! My Viking ancestors left a trail of DNA thru Scotland!
Love the artwork on this bow and the tiller ain't near as bad as some of mine. Love it.

Stirs some ancient emotions from deep within. Just beautiful.
-
That definitely catches the eye, and holds your attention... :o very cool ;)

I know that it has been repeated a lot, BUT THAT IS SOME OF THE MOST DETAILED ARTWORK I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME. I have done some of the celtic knot art. It is time consuming.
Damn fine job!!!
Pleasure to look at.
Thanks for sharing, and giving me new ideas...if you don't mind >:D

JW_Halverson - Vikings and Scotts! YEAH! Thanks! I was not happy with the tiller but that's making me feel a little better. It does shoot pretty good. In reality he probably won't shoot it much anyway. Thanks again!
