Title: cocobolo finishing questions
Post by: soy on February 13, 2013, 06:03:18 pm
I am using spar urethane As a finish on an Osage with Coco accents... I wipe down the cocoa with denatured alcohol before applying the finish the stuff over the cocoa remains tacky... does cocoa not like spar urethane ???

I too have had trouble in the past with coco.  I found that an acetone wipe followed by minwax spray lacquer dried nicely.  When wiping, I find that it is important to wipe into the coco so you dont smear the coco oils onto the wood surrounding the coco.

Seal it with super glue or shellac first. Then you can put any sealer you want over that. Super glue is easier than you think and works dy-no-mite soybert.

i finish it then once i have enough coats i lightly sand (to the point of no longer sticky) do one last coat let it dry and wipe it with acetone and that works for me

Shellac will stick to anything and anything will stick to shellac!  ;)
