Pearly told me he made a Hickory bow, but I don't believe him. Hain't never seen a picture of it. :) What's you think Clint and Chicken Hawk?
-
Sounds like you have good pot up there. LOL....Sorry ole man, couldn't resist.
-
Charlie, LMAO ole boy.
-
Here you go old man (s). You forced me to take bad pics of an otherwise nice bow! I finished this a week ago.
64" ntn, 1 1/2" wide flatbow style, heat tempered, 1" held reflex, trapped back, water buffalo overlays, and a simple straight/dished grip. It pulls an easy 60 plus @ 27". I got the wood from my buddy osage hater Ryan. Thanks for a nice chunk doc! This is another child of Martyjam13.
-
Did you heat treat that hickory, Drums? Curious. You've been putting out some real straight standing hickory lately. Kinda getting my confidence back in hickory....
-
I did. Its dry, dry, dry Matt. This wood hasnt seen anything above 25-30% since Ryan gave it to me.
-
Sweet bow there pearly :) glad you decided to post it ;)
-
Looks like he answered your question Roy ;) he showed you ;D

Gun ships? ??? Huh? I don't see no gun ships Roy...all I see is a twig holding a bent twig >:D

I was going to send it you Roybert, but since its well over 41# I knew you wouldnt be able to chipmunk hunt with it. I know how much you enjoy your chipmunk hunting at your advanced age and all.
-
Better watch out workin that white wood, Chris. You'll ruin your rep!! ;D
-
Nice bow, really nice lines on the handle.
-
That turned out excellent. Glad to see it finished up. Make sure to share what you do with those billets. After them we might find you cutting more white woods. ;)
-
lol you guys crack me up! that is one good looking bow, good job.
the other Roy ;)
-
Turned out looking really nice pearl. The trick will be to keep it dry now.
-
I hear ya Cody. It has 6 coats spray satin and many coats of birchwood Casey wax.
-
Another fine Pearly bow. Great job on it buddy!
-
Nice bow Pearl.
I've made a few pignut hickory and if you keep them dry they can be real shooters. I made a 60" ntn, 58# @ 28" and it really spits out a 500 gr arrow. I kepted it dry during building with a piece of flexable metal dryer hose and a 100 watt light bulb at the bottom. Kept the air flow through the hose/pipe just with the heat from the light bulb. and it really kept the wood dry. I've got a unlimited amount of pignut hickory available so I'll be making more hickory bows. I've trapped the backs on the last bows I build with good success. One of the hic bows has a few frets (I think they are call that)on the belly at the top & bottom limb fades. I hope it won't be fatal. I'm not sure what caused it. Tiller looked good. I'll get some pics and post them on another thread and maybe we can figure out what caused the frets.
Again nice bow, I think there's other good bow wood other than osage.

I guess if it doesn't shoot, just Chrome it, or spray paint on it:) Or wax on wax off:)
Howdy Roy:)
Drummer Boy, just ask Uncle Roy and I'll build you a real shooten bow, Son:)
-
Very nice,I have made and shot a lot of Hickory and have found they ant that bad if you will take a little extra care, keep them in a good dry place when not shooting and keep the waxed and they are fine. Good work on that one Chris. :)

Pearl, when you can, would you get a couple of close up pictures of the trapped back? I would like to see how you did it?
-
Hey Charlie...when we say "trap" or "trapped";its short for the word trapezoid. What your doing is making a trapezoid cross section with the back being the top narrower part....got it? Some woods can take more trapping than others....hickory can take the most due to its tensile strength
-
Thanks everybody but Roy and Chickenhawk, you guys dont count.
Charlie in essence trapping is nothing more than chamfering the backs edges. In this case I made about a 3/8" chamfer per side. That equaled about 1/3 of its total width.
-
Yeah Chris I do understand, and Thanks for giving me the info Pearl. I was just curious as to how deep or wide you do the trapping. But I got it....thanks.
-
That's a beauty Pearly! I do love me some hickory! But then, its a considerably drier climate where I live. Josh
