Title: Best Type of Hickory ? species ?
Post by: biglonglongbow on February 19, 2013, 07:50:15 pm
Hi, I am wondering what the exact type of Hickory is the pure white stuff with less brown and pink, there seems to be different names for hickory depending on who you talk to and some people say Hickory is Hickory.. and is it the white sapwood only you use ?

Thanks

Its all good hickory. Sapwood has all the strength. The darker brown heartwood will make a bow, Ive done one. Its quite brittle feeling and not nearly as resilliant feeling as the sapwood.

There's several different species of hickory....pignut...shagbark....shellbark...mockernut...bitternut...nutmeg...water...and pecan.

Pignut is usually the densest and best...but hickory is hickory is hickory...and its all JUNK >:D

There are differences in the hickories but not much to do with color !!
Don't let that yellow wood pusher steer ya wrong !!
You will know as soon as you split and debark it ,if its good as gold or not !
