Title: Found more stuff!
Post by: CHUCKER on October 27, 2007, 01:13:10 pm
I went out this morning between showers and checked a few more spots along the lake. I took some photos and I have another question. I noticed a seam of rock, brown on the exposed (outside) grayish blue on the inside. It is kind of grainy but sounds like glass when you take a chip.

looks like basalt to me . i use it a lot for stone tools. if it is the same i have its not really knappable. great for adzes and axe heads. you can percuss it to shape and then finish it by grinding on an edge. ive made points using this method too.

I will suggest you might want too get a good hammerstone instead of the steel one , I use a copper hammer I found at Harbor Freight, it works great for taking big spalls off.    Trapper
