Hi All,
Here's another bow I didn't expect to survive past low brace, but this wood keeps amazing me. I used a short piece with a double crown along most of its back, a sideways bend on one limb, and 3 big wholes in the belly that dont go all the way through. I figured, "what the heck, I'll do something wild with it". Well after numerous straightenings with a heat gun, I finally got her under control. I originally heat-tempered 9" of reflex into it, but after deflexing the handle I ended up with 6.5". I got very little spring back out of the form. She turned out to be an amazing shooter: 57" ntn, 1 1/8" at mid limb, 40# ish @ 27". It turned out a little light, but you would never know it seeing them arrows fly.....Smoooooooth!! :) After tillering and shooting in she retains 4 1/4" reflex! Not my best finish job, but this turned into a test more than anything else. My next will be sinew backed. Finished with tung oil and wax. thanks for looking.

What a great looking bow, very nicely done. I will have to admit that I am starting to have a real soft spot for these bows made from Buckthorn...I don't think I have any locally but I sure wish I did. Has some of the same visual qualities that I like in a yew but with just a touch of grit to it and I like that...thanks for sharing.
-
OH MY!!! :o :o :o that is just beautiful! Love that profile! Id bet that thing really slings an arrow fast! Your finish looks great as usual, and the photos are second to none. Well done Cody! You are an inspiration ;)
-
awesome as allways Cody.you can work a piece of buckthorn.do you know if it grows down here in ohio?i would love to find some.great job buddy.
-
Yeah that finish job really sucks...ill take it off your hands if it really bothers you that much >:D
How many hours has it been braced and how many shots have been shot out of it? That's osage like in compression to keep that kind of reflex...I would think sinew would do well on buckthorn...maybe decrown some sap off so you have that good heart wood remaining for a belly....
Sweet bow..I love me some reflex
-
Thanks guys.
@ seabass, I'm not sure if it grows that far south, however, I am bringing a ton to the classic. Not sure if your going or not. Also, I am planning on taking a trip yo visit Keenan this summer and I think he said that you wanted to take the trip too. If thats true, he talked about scheduling it so we would go at the same time. I could bring you some then.
-
i'll be at the classic Cody.maybe we can do some trading.i am getting excited about the trip to Keenans.he told me you was driving.man that would be an awesome trip.i think i am gonna fly in.see you at the classic brother.

Thanks hawk. It was strung a bunch during tillering and its got about 30 or so arrows through it so far. The thing that I like about it is that it snaps back into reflex, not one of those bows that you unstring and it ssssllllllooooooooowwwwwllllllyyyyy inches back. I actually like this wood more than osage...for the time being.

Another beauty !
Good job as all ways !!
Hope to see ya soon !

Dang nice one there Cody and thats some bold reflex. The buckthorn sure isn't just average bow wood from the looks of what your getting it to do. Now you giving me the push to get a little more daring with my bow design, just what I need after breaking one on
the tillering tree today  .
-
Another mighty fine bow, Cody!! :)

Thanks Greg. If you do attempt one of the more touchy designs, I would recommend heat tempering it. also, go narrow, 1 1/4" to 1 3/8" wide, It seems to like that.

MAN!!!! The profile down to the finish ;D is beautiful. I just love the reflexes d flexed bows a my fave. Keep em comin.

Ya, the reflex is unreal. Nice!

O.K. So with you posting all of these very fine buckthorn bows,I happened to notice some trees the other day. I don't know how I knew they were buckthorn ,but somehow I just did. Lots and lots of it. Acres in fact................................................in a conservation area. Just wait, it gets worse. Further along the trail there is a sign saying how it's an invasive species and the conservation authority is trying to get rid of it all(good luck!) If they were cutting it ,I would make a few calls to see if I could get the wood. Some the size of a small apple tree. But they are using a hebicide, and It looks like most of the bigger stuff is dead >:(. I'm hoping there might be a few stray patches in vacant lots or along roadsides nearby. Wish me luck.It seems that you are suitably impressed with it's characteristics.

That bow is incredible! I can't believe you're able to do that with a self-bow. I see glass-backed longbows that don't have that kind of aggressive reflex. Well done! Have you put it through a chrono yet? I'd be really interested to hear what kind of FPS it puts out.
Also, anybody else think the buckthorn is a good look-alike for yew at a distance?
-
Super duper. It seems to me like buckthorn is the best mix of osage and yew. Haven't worked it yet but it looks durable, specially the way its handling that reflex and poppin back into place and has a nice grain pattern and silkiness like the yew. Hmmmmm. I think you may have started something cody. I'm gonna have to see if we got any growing in my neck of the woods and giver a look see. Outstanding bow buddy. Danny

That bow has some serious reflex. I am impressed.
-
Wow, gorgeous profile. Finish work is top shelf as usual. And I got to say that buckthorn is very impressive wood. I bet its almost as good as plum >:D >:D
Great work Cody,
Gabe

I love all the bows you make Cody. That buckthorn is some beautiful stuff. Why is it the nasty invasives always seem to make the good bows?
-
Very nice Cody...bring that to the Classic...pleeeease. You are definitely the Master of Missile Launchers!

I am very impressed.
Believe me I don't say that very often.
Top drawer work on that bow.
Buckthorn is a great wood, we have lots growing here but man is it tough to find a good piece....however I do have some staves drying. The first bow I made from it was only 1 1/4 wide 56 inches and draws 60lbs @ 26, it took virtually no set and because it was only the 1 st from this weood I didn't push it too far. The next bow from it is going to be tortured with some serious reflex!
-
Always look forward to seeing Your bows Cody, and this one didn't disappoint. Really like the profile of this one - well done. Bob
-
Sweet bend in that bow. I used to scorn buckthorn when I had to push my way through the stuff. Never would have guessed it a first rate bow wood. Wish I had some now.
-
Great looking bow, you look well pleased with it. Im shooting my buckthorn bow more and more, shame I dont have any more staves.
-
With those looks and specs, I bet that would be a joy to shoot.
-
Another nice one Cody, beautiful bow, very well done. :)

I love that wood. Its the only yew I can get a bow from! Good job Cody.
-
Very nice bow. That stuff doesn't grow down here, or not that I'm aware of, but I've seen a number of bows from it lately. The reflex is surprising. Great job as per your usual.
-
Awesome all 'round. Love the detail on the tips.
-
Unbelievable profile on that bow!
I live in Buckthorn mecca but don't have any staves, you've more than convinced me on this wood. I've gotta get out in the woods.
-
I think that is my favorite bow profile. Great work.
-
I'd be very curious to see a chronograph result on this bow. Barring that numbers on how far it shoots "x" weight arrow at 45 degrees would be interesting. The highly reflexed bows I've made have been exceptionally fast for their draw weight, but I've never reflexes one even vaguely close to that far. The unstrung profile looks reverse braced....
Great work :)
-
very beautiful, very cool

Cody
After this post I am sure that I will not be able to afford a to build bows from this stuff!
The value just keeps climbing !
From a couple of years ago at worthless, to today at near priceless, you should be rich by the years end !!
Have fun !!

Another beauty Cody, I bet it shoots smooooooooooooth :) Well done!!!!
40ish @ 27 sounds good to me.... going in for an MRI on BOTH shoulders next week Arggggggggg??
-
That think looks wicked. Nice job.
-
Exactly my taste!
sleek and Beautiful, well done...as most of what you make it seems.
-
Gorgeous wood, sharp bend, slim lines...
Absolutely great bow!
-
I had to look at this bow again. Beautiful work as always Cody...and that reflex!! I bet it is a fast 40 pounder! Sweet as can be.
-
Another great bow Cody!
You really have mastered the buckthorn!
-
Man, thanks guys a bunch for the comments. I am as impressed with this wood as you are!

I'm more impressed with you than the wood. You could give me the same piece of buckthorn and I'd come back with a broken walking stick tied with twine.
