Title: Morels?
Post by: bowtarist on March 21, 2013, 05:15:15 pm
Anybody finding any shrooms yet?  One of my Buddies in Madison, Indiana, down in southern Indiana, said he was finding blacks two weeks ago.  We are usually two weeks behind them and I start Spring Break tomorrow after classes are out for 10 days.  YES!! I'm hoping since we had a lot of water this winter it's gonna be a good year.

Anywho, anybody having any luck yet?  How about you Tennesseeins?

Happy Hunting, dpg

Seems like our breaks overlap. We really need to do a rock run and find some roons as well. Thursday or Friday next week might work if you're not busy.

I saw em in the snow once. Don't know if they got snowed on or if the grew thru it.  I've yet to go out, but my first day of vacation w/o the family is tomorrow morning.  I've got a couple "honey doos", then I should have my time more oro less.  I'm gonna try to get a good go on a hickory bow.  We got lots of snow right now.  So there may be a snow day for the kids tomorrow...that'll put a hamper on my plans a bit.  I'll keep you posted on the morels.  You guys up top there crack me up! dpg

This was two years ago.  My personal best day.  Cooper and I were making our way through a rain storm and I decided to take a "short cut", was crossed a batch of brambles and whala we came upon all these is one field, six plastic grocery bags full.  13 lbs.  I was under employed @ the time and sold all but two pounds and bought new tires for the van.  Anywho, wanted to get atleast one pic up here.  ;) have a gooder, dpg

Good lord ' mercy, that is a lovely pile of morels, bowtarist!  Most years it is far to dry here for them to send up the fruiting bodies that we call the mushroom.  The main part is the huge mat of mycorhizomes underground, the part we pick is like the tip of the iceberg.

We do from time to time get good crops of puffballs.  I found one the size of a softball once.  It was just barely past prime, starting to soften a bit.  Sliced it 3/4 inch thick and fried up in butter.  They are so good that the steak on your plate is the side dish!

Last year I was finding them by now but we are running about a week behind this year, redbuds are almost opening . I've got a spot along the Cimeron river that they pop early and usually has good numbers just don't like it when the wind blows , sand is hard on my teeth.
