For those who haven't heard the story of this bow, here goes. I found an osage log cut and laying across a ravine on our farm. I didn't cut and we'd own the farm for nearly 13 years. So, it was at least that old. It was weathered and cracked. I knew I'd never try to make a bow out of it. So, I took to the Classic last year. I knew some of the crazy bowyers down there might enjoy the challenge.
The first person I saw working on a snakey, hole in the limb bow was blackhawk. I had found my victim. "Sure," he said, "I'll see what I can do with it. I have one hbb left, would like it?" My first Classic trade and I had done quite well, a rotten piece of osage for a piece of hhb.
Fast foreward 10 1/2 months. Blackhawk comes to my little bowyer gathering. After a tour of the place, he quiet walks out of the workshop. I step out to see if he needs help bring something in. He's carrying a bow, but I think nothing of it really. He's wanting show me his newest masterpiece. "You know that rotten piece of osage you gave me last year? Well, I don't want it any more." And, hands me the bow. I nearly fell over.

sorry about the small pics, guys. I'm really struggling with camera settings and resizing images since I lost my PhotoShop program in a computer crash.

Great story and a sweet bow. That Blackhawk sure is a stand-up Guy ! Bob
-
Thanks for putting some pics up of her Dave ;). No offense but ya know this one looks so much better in person ;) that's a special piece of wood right there :)
-
That is a beauty.
-
I don't comment on many of the nice bows that people show on this site, every now and then a really special one comes along and I have to comment. That is one more fine bow, even to a crotchety old curmudgeon like myself.
-
Wow that sure is a beautiful bow! I do hope you post some of those larger photos too!!
-
I have to agree with Blackhawk. Sorry Dave, but the bow does look even better in person. And I hear tell that the bow has already made a 100+ yd shot . . . some people have all the luck!
-
Blackhawk is right. The pictures don't do justice to the bow. I don't know why he didn't pictures of me shooting the bow on the 3-d course. ???
Any this bow SHOOTS! It's flat, quiet and has zero handshock. I hit that bedded buck at 100+ yards with it on the first (and only) try.
I was nervous wreck stringing it for the first time with those with those teeny tiny recurved tips. I thought I was going to pass out. My hands were shaking and my knees were shaking. It was crazy. I didn't doubt Blackhawk's craftmanship, I just doubted my ability to string it correctly without destroying it.

and the money shot
-
that was a nice shot Dave.glad i was there to see it.

Great story
I really love those bows with a big hole in the front... one of these days someone's gotta make a joke longrod with out of a twisty stick with a chunk of Oak on the end with a wing nut stickin' out so it can be adjusted up and down the rod.
That'd tease those target boys.

Great story! And a special bow!
Looks like I need to let blacky borrow a piece of wood ;)
-
Holy crap that bow looks like a good shooter!! Super nice bow!
-
That is one crazy nice, one of a kind bow you got there Hedgeapple. Not one a guy could just pick up at the factory. Nice story behind it also. That Blackhawk guys got some serious bow building talent. ;D
-
Sweet bow mister,

I agree it's a killer in bow person for sure. So Dave on the hundred yard shot do you contribute it to your skills or the bow?

Outstanding story and I love the happy ending.

Very very cool, good back story, and that's truly a masterpiece :)
-
Glad to finally see some pictures of that thing. It's a beauty for sure. That hollow knot looks like a pipe bowl. Great job on it Blackhawk and great job on the 100 yard kill shot Dave.
-
great job of letting the wood talk to ya. it truly is a master piece
-
rock on! Congratulations, and good on you blackhawk!
-
Great looking & shooting bow Chris and Dave. It seems to have some real good mojo after seeing that long shot you made! One of a kind.

I'd almost be tempted to never fire an arrow out of that thing again. One and only arrow nails a target at over 100 yards. You can't top that.
-
DLH, I have theory. That log laid around in that ravine for years wishing some day to be bow. Then a naive would-be bowyer finds her and give her to a master, who turns her into a work of art. AND THEN, she get's to come home in all her glory. Well, Miss Bluegrass Hole just had to show off a little. Kinda like Miss America taking a fine turn on the stage after getting her crown.
It was the bow.

Thanks Spyder
New, it 64" 47# @ 26.

Imagine if blackhawk could get his hands on some good bow wood like....say, yew. Instead of this second string, crappy, half rotted, knot-hole riddled osage! >:D
-
It is truly amazing to see what a master can do with a piece of junky wood most wouldn't even mess with! The vision blackhawk has when he looks at a piece of wood is impressive.
That's a beautiful bow, and the story behind it is great, your first shot, priceless!
The entire story, of strangers becoming friends, sharing knowledge, trading goods, life long memories, that really makes this "hobby" and site, a special place.
-
As my golfing buddies say when I manage to bomb one off the tee...now that's just stupid!
Hawkman, that thing is gorgeous.
Hedge, I can only imagine how it felt to get that piece of art handed back to you.
Man, I love this place, I don't think life gets much better than the stories of comradery and generosity exemplified by the individuals on this site.
Awesome...
