Title: Would these dimensions work?
Post by: Bitterguy on April 04, 2013, 02:20:33 pm
Rps offered me a hickory stave and some guidance on how to cut sapplings (if your readingng this I'm going to take you up on that offer relatively soon, just working my friends work schedule out). I decided that since my old man's b-day is coming up ill make the bow for him, I planned for it to be 68" ttt and 35# @27" anyways I was wondering if a 4" handle section with 2" long fades and it taper from 2" to 1/2" would work for a pyramid. If so what should the thickness taper be?

a pyramid should be the same thickness from the end of the fades to tip, get it down close to 1/2" even and go from there, the measurements that you have should work out, Bub

That should be plenty of wood for that draw weight and draw length.

At only 35# you can narrow that up a 1/2" and still get a great bow. All other measurents you suggested sound great to me.

I didn't see the 35# draw weight, yeah 1 1/2" wide will get ya where you want

Bitter,
I just happen to be working on one for my sister inlaw that is 37 lbs at 25 inches out of hickory. Here are the stats on it.
tip width at string grooves= 5/16
thickness at string grooves 7/16(could be 3/8) but don't want to mess with it it has no hand shock.
fade= 1 1/8 too narrow would like to have 1 1/2 but stave was only 1 1/8 wide.
arrow pass 11/16 (don't go narrower)
handle thickness 1.50 in
You will see in the pict I had to glue a piece of wood to the back of the bow handle cause I was getting some bend there which is not good for a stiff handled bow as it could blow apart there.
The bow is a pyramid design. Also I heat treated it. with some reflex which it lost some while shooting it on a humid cold day. If it has some string follow thats okay. Also I have found the bow will lose a couple of pounds after shot for a while. That is why I made my sister inlaws 37.
Attached are picts for your reference
Hope it helps,
Greg
