Nice website. I like the plains indian bows, except for one thing- they are rather annoyingly loud.
-
Hi, please explain me what does it mean annoyingly loud.
thank you.
-
I'm looking for Eastern Red Cedar [juniper virginiana] staves, 50inch. long. Thank for help.
-
I don't think the noise level is caused by the design

Beautiful work, Takintazipa. I have a desire to build this style bow. Jackcrafty(Patrick) makes some beautiful Plains style bows and arrows. Check out the "How To" section here and look for Jackcrafty's work. Also Robustus has made Plains style sinew/wood/horn style bows along with the Asiatic Horn Bows he makes.
You might Google The Smithsonian Institute and the Museum of the American Indian for pics and info about many Native American style bows and arrows.

You do some nice work.

Nice work! Where are you exactly located - perhaps we are nearby?
Here are my attempts on plains style bows:

Good work man.
I'm working on a Plains style bow now. I haven't finished one before but I really like the look and design.
Keep up the good work. :)

I've made 3. Got my designs from Allely & Hamm's Encyclopedia Volume II. I was following designs from the Cheyenne tribe and kept them at 50". Selfbows, so far. Here is a very short video of my first effort shooting, made of Hop Hornbeam. It's no louder than any other bow. You can here the arrow passing the bow in this video, but there was no wrap to dampen the sound. I actually find that the short "plains" style bows are easier to make efficient, without vibration or twang because you HAVE to get all the wood working and focus on tiller. I'd hunt with them out to about 15 yards...

Hi guys,
I'm interest in original bows pictures. I have all from AMNH, US lokal museums or from auction's database. I just ask, iff somebody have something special, for instance, something never published etc.
I do bows over 20 years, and iff you checked my pages /gallery/ you have seen that I do plains bows with small or no differences from originals.
I have no any problems with shape or technology problems; I just want to have ispiration by design of originals.
Problem is, that some of beautifull bows are in the quiver on picture, but the quiver covered the design of bow.
Thank's for your complimet's. :)

I think they look great. I think just a plain one or maybe a little paint would be fine. One thing I do like is the added small arrow rest which the Souix did include in their bows sometimes. You should expand out into other tribes Cree, Blackfoot, Pawnee, Nakota(Stone Souix),Cheyenne etc. They all have there slight differences. You should check Indianguy he does make fine museum quality pieces.
-
Those quivers are awesome...nice work on everything

Hi Simon, actualy I'm staying in Prague, but I live on the North.
Your bows are nice.
Maybe we can make some meeting together.
-
You do some beautiful work. Quivers are really sweet.

Takintazipa, I have some pictures of a little sinew backed Lakota bow that I will try to send you later today. I will have to dig around a bit to see if I can find any measurements for it. Seems like it is about 44 inches (112 cm) long. It is at a little museum in Cleburne, Texas. Curtis
-
This is not the bow from Cleburne, but another that you may not have photos of. It is not sinew backed, but I thought you might be interested anyway. I did not take these pictures, but had them in my files. This is a bow that is in the Wyoming State Museum. The label says Shoshoni. It also says the wood is willow. Curtis
-
Here are some photos of the Lakota bow in Cleburne. I have some better photos of the over-all bow, but I do not have them with me currently. I will post them when I have a chance. Curtis
-
O'h guys this is what I'm looking for. Thank you. Both bow are beautifull. Because I study the color -design, the first one is for me much better, but the shape of the second one is something amazing. Pity is, that many bows are in the quivers on the photographs, so its difficult to find some with paintings. Do you have some pictures of Cheyenne bow with paintings? I have only two, one is white with green and red strips and second one is just carved with small drawings.
Curtis do you have an idea what kind of wood is made this Lakota bow?
Thank you.
-
I'm not sure of the type wood on the Lakota bow, but it is very likely ash. It is not Osage orange. I will have to see what else I can come up with. I have a lot of my photos on a flash drive that I have left at work. I'll try to run by there and pick it up this evening (still afternoon here right now). Curtis
-
Curtis thank you for your goodwill. You can use the electronic data box, where you can load your data, and I can download that.
I don't know the U.S data banks, only Czech, so it's up to you what is comfortable for you. Iff you have same interest, I can do same to you.

to Don> thank you.
It's some body here, who is able to trade me wood. Somebody who is willing and open to communicate with me about this.
I need eastern cedar/juniper/, hickory, black ash etc., kind of wood which we have not here. Nobody trade this kind of wood here, so it's difficult to obtain. Thanks for your offers. please write me here> takintazipa@gmail.com

I have some more bow photos for you, but these are photos that were taken by other people. Many of these do not have a tribe listed. Some of these are not that clear, but there are probably quite a few that you do not have. I will send these in several e-mails. Curtis

Bow from Copenhagen with snake skin, quillwork and horse hair. CC
-
This one is not sinew backed, but is a great example of a Comanche self bow with a solid collection history. It was collected after a battle at a Comanche village in Texas.
-
These are mostly Cheyenne bows, but the images are not great. If I can remember who I got these from, I will see if I can bet some better copies. CC
-
Here is a sampling of bows from various places. Some of these are sinew backed and some are not. CC
-
A couple more sinew backed. CC

Two Sioux bows from the Branly museum. CC

Last of the wood bows. CC

A couple of elk antler bows for good measure. CC

Sorry takintazipa I can't assist you with black ash or any other of the woods you had in mind. Over here it's mainly white ash and some green ash. Nice bows by the way.

Send tipi stuff a pm. Lots of original pictures and his recreations as well. Self and sinew backed both. Lots of other southern Cheyenne stuff as well.
