What kind of untesil's do you take on your hunting/camping trips to make coffee. Pots, pans, etc. And if anyone makes coffee with a french press, I would love to hear how you grind your beans for the press. I am looking for a alternative coffee making method as I saw a guy using a french press at a shoot last year, and loved the idea. Only thing is I did not see him grind his coffee beans?
-
how bout a morter and pestle.i got one you can use Charlie.it would take a little elbow grease but would get it done.or you could use a manual spice grinder.
-
Billy Crystal in City Slickers springs to mind :D
Though one thing you don't wanna do is scare the animals away ;)
Can't you buy pre-ground coffee in the States? Here in Ireland, we have to go to specialist shops if we want whole beans - pre-ground is pretty much the only thing most widely available...
-
I am trying to find a manual bean grinder now Steve. And yes, we can get whole beans here and have them ground, but after doing some research, they type of grind that the commercial grinder do, is more for the percolator style grind. Just trying to figure out a good way to get a good cup of coffee, with the least amount of items to take to do so.
-
At Rendezvous I usually just put the day's roasted beans in a very close woven linen bag, fold it over and let 'er have it with the backside of my small hand axe.
Grounds set aside until the water in my quart and a half copper billy comes to a boil. Once at a rolling boil, I take it off the fire, let it set 30 seconds to cool a smidge, and dump in the grounds. I tend to let it steep for at least 15 minutes so that by then the grounds have fully absorbed all the water they can and have settled out.
In those 15 minutes, I have whipped up some biscuit mix and have it wound around a stick and roasted over the fire. Breakfast is ready.
-
I use regular ground coffee in my press all the time, and it turns out great. Buy the small 3oz vacuum packed packages and you can have a different flavor every morning. About half a package in each press does the trick.
-
What about the old hand grind machines, still see them in the antique shops now and again
-
Charlie, I have a little ONE bean grinder I can let you have.. Only grinds one bean at a time but works great.. ;)
-
I just make it over the fire with my cowboy coffee maker. Its just a blue perculator type. I bring coffee in ziplocs.
-
I do like pearl. :) I have a big one I will make it at night cause it takes so long to perk, then just warm it up till it gone and make another. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Thanks everyone. Now Roy, I know someone had to show you how to use that, because they did not come with pictures directions. >:D
-
Charlie, it'll crack nuts too ole boy. :) It's kinda like a survival tool all it one:)
-
I've got a box of individual coffee bags. Just pore boiling water on and let soak like tea.
-
Now we all know that Roy is the original "Nut Cracker". Thought he looked familiar...
-
I pre grind the beans at home. Put the grind in a coffee can with a lid.
-
Well I got me a press, and stainless steel pot and some coffee beans and I ground there at the store on course. I should be set. Thanks for all the advise.
-
Charlie be careful ya don't press your fingers ole boy:)
-
Sounds like experience talking again there Mr Roy????..LOL
-
Nope Charlie, I just know how ya are son:)
-
LOL....I have been know to be a little backwards....in my older days...
-
Hi Charlie I got two words for you Cafe Bustelo! Ron
-
LOL.....Thanks Ron. Well I just sampled my first cup of french press coffee, and I might say not bad at all. Got a little tweaking to do, but I think I have found the way I like to make coffee. So I am going out and get me the highest rated caffeine coffee beans I can find, and head to the classic. So if any one see's an old, run down, can hardly walk man climbing and bouncing off walls at the classic, it would be me. :o
And shut up Roy. >:(

If all else fail there is always cowboy coffee; pour grounds in boiling water and boil for a few minutes. turn off the heat and when the water settles pour a cup of cold water in. This will settle the grounds to the bottom so you can pour a clean cup off the top.
-
That is next on my list to learn to make right Pat. I have had it made that way, but the one's that made it could stand a few lessons if you know what I mean.
-
You do get your daily requirements of fiber with this type of cowboy coffee! ;D

Dad made 1000's of gallons that way when he was in the military for 23 years. The guys never complained!
-
I always heard it was called cowboy coffe cause it mad you're legs bow up. Ron
-
That is the only way my kin from the mountains here would make coffee, and the coffee post stayed on the wood stove all day, just placed around to keep it warm, and the grounds never came out until the pot was empty and another pot put on. Now you talking about something that would bow you legs???????????? >:D
-
Charlie, you know that a coffee pot on the fire is an invitation for visitors such as myself with empty cup in hand to sit down, visit for a while and solve the world's problems...
-
I have one question.
Does Charlie know how to boil water?:)
-
You best be glad your mouth is sore, cause it is about to get a lot more sooorrrreeeerrrrrrrr.....lol. Matt, I think you are on to something. I bet if I set up a stand where I was last year, I could get ride of a lot of coffee the first thing in the morning, don't you think? And for anyone at the classic, it would be my pleasure to make a pot of coffee and share a cup with you, all you have to do is ask.
-
usually with a french press, you need a coarse grind so that it doesn't just go right through the screen. A manual grinder is the best for this since the burr can be easily adjusted.
-
I am looking for a manual grinder as I go places. I did get a burr grinder for now, and will grind my measurements out as I decide how much I want to use to get the taste I want. Lots of trial and error to get the best taste, but in the long run, well worth it. And I can take my pre-measured coffee amounts where ever I go, and just boil some water and be done with it.
-
Why is it, that ANY coffee no matter how You make it either by the fire or on a Coleman stove is the BEST in the world ? When the tent is pitched and the Dining fly is up, I generally make a pot - UUUUUMMMMM ! Bob
-
Here you go - old fashioned coffee grinders from $24 up.

-
So what your saying Charlie is ya wanna grind it by hand? :) Go for it, it's yours:)
-
Hey Charlie I didn't even put up a stand and it was no problem to get rid of a couple of pots each day. Ron
-
LOL....Roy you are a trip. If it comes down to it, I can use a rock and hammer, either way, I am going to have me some coffee....lol
-
I am a hardcore caffeine addict.
I don't bother with coffee when hunting. I bring caffeine pills. Take two when I wake up and away I go.
Patrick
-
I made coffee this morning and substituted Red Bull for the water.
I hear colors and smell sounds now!
-
JW, now that's funny!
-
My buddy brought some Starbucks Via sinlgle serving instant micro-ground coffee on an elk hunt. Was shocked at how good it was for instant coffee. Very minimal space in the pack. I use a French press at work and standard ground coffee works fine. The Melita filter funnels work nicely too.
-
Nuthin fancy here. Mr. coffee at the house. A blue tin camp pot. Folgers regular grind. Oh and I have become addicted to hazelnut creamer.... that stuff is worse than crack.
-
My old charred black rendesvousing enameld coffee pot and a little white gas burner will be running at my camp site every morning.Folgers is the ground of choice.Basically camp fire coffee.Like to get up with the birds and watch everything come to life around me.Maybe a little deer sausage for breakfest with it.
-
I will second the starbuck instant coffee. When i go backpacking that is all i bring. Perfect for traveling real light
-
Funny. I'm the WORST coffee addict at home but I don't like drinking it when I'm in camp. I have to admit that I chew on sticks and stuff when I'm going through the withdrawal but after a day or two I'm fine.
It depends on the weather, though. I HATE hot drinks in summer. Winter is different. I might drink coffee to warm up.
-
You can add some Egg Shell to you Cowboy Coffee pot to help the process as well...
I also bring The Starbuck's Instant coffee packets along...
To add to my Cowboy Coffee...
If it Cain't Strip Paint, Degreese Berrings and Blow the Plug outa your Gun Barrel... well it just ain't coffee. O:)
Floating horse shoes is optional.
-gus
-
That is just about how I would describe Starbucks Coffee....about as bad as you can get....lol. Did I tell you I hate Starbucks Coffee?
-
Charlie, just shut up and shoot your damn bow, Boy:) They sell coffee at the classic... I'll call Pappy and have him deliver coffee to your tent every morning, before your old a$$ is even out of bed.
-
Dang Roy you're hammering on poor ol Charlie pretty hard. If you need help Charlie let me know I got you're back.Ron
-
Cracker, put Roy at the top of your "Wacking list". You know how those boy's from up around PA (only directed at Roy here) are, they can not call them selves northerners, and can not be a true southerner, so he gets loud, and all macho and stuff. And since he only has five more days in the work force before retiring and pestering his beautiful wife every day, he is just talking out of his head. You know, no place to call home now.....lol.
And besides you ole coot, Pappy don't deliver, he gets delivery to himself from all of us....so there. If you would come out of hiding now and then you would know that ole boy >:D >:D >:D >:D
-
Charlie ol buddy I don't know how to break this to you but anything north of the TN border is a yankee. Lot of good brothers up thar but they be yanks. ;)
-
LOL......Not Roy, trust me. Sixty five years old, and they still have no idea what he is. >:D
-
I'm 64 Charlie ole boy:) Soon to be 65...
-
lol.....you will get there....real quick...lol
-
I had a lot of good suggestions on my camp coffee making equipment, and thanks to all for the suggestions. I used my french press while at the classic and really really enjoyed a cup of coffee made the way I like it.
When I arrived at the classic and Matt and his wife Heather and family showed up, a short time later he told me he had something for me. So I went to his spread and he pulled out this.

Matt I don't know how to thank you and your family. I have it in my kitchen right now, going to clean it good and see what happens. I am sure you, your family and I will share many a cup of coffee made with the help of your gift. Thank you so very very much.
-
Oh Charlie, that is one nice addition to a camp! Ain't them 'Wicki's good folk?
-
I like Pappys coffe just fine an he gets up half hour before me ;D Now about this yankee thing. I don't know about southern Pa. where Roy is from but in North Western Pa. we are red neck yankees and awfully proud of it. ;D ;D :o Bob
-
LOL....Outbackbob. Yeah Pappy's coffee was good when I was too lazy to make mine. No matter where anyone is from when it comes to the classic, we are all one big family for sure.
-
By the way Bob, you finished my point yet?...lol

Charlie: Don't worry about thanking me. You already have, my friend.
-
I can't believe Ole Charlie Boy didn't hurt himself using that coffee grinder:) Was there an arrow on it pointing in the direction to turn it? LOL
Nice gift, Matt.
-
Picture this....Charlie looks up from a stump where he is kneeling. A cotton sack of half pounded out coffee beans is on the stump and the coffee grinder is raised up in the air, halfway through a stroke. "Whadya mean you put the beans in it and turn the handle???"
-
   !
-
Well I know of one guy that will never get a cup of coffee from me. No names thought Roy.
-
I just knew it:)
LMAO
-
LOL....thanks Roy. Now that does make sense. Who showed you that?
-
Man... Now That is a Fine Looking Grinder... Yes Sir!
And when you ain't a-grinding your coffee, you can use it to grind your Turquoise for inlays... >:D
