Hey guys I was just thinking, since we use pretty strange sounding parts for bow (at first). Has anyone tried to back a bow with hide glue and Hair, horse hair, human hair whatever. I wonder if that would be of any structural value? just a thought mates.
-
Horse hair is fairly stout so it should work if prepared right. Joel
-
yeah see that was what i was thinking !
-
I had the same thought several years ago. Somebody was supposed to send me some to try but I guess he forgot then so did I after awhile. Horse hair does have a waxy feel to it and I have heard that hide glue will not stick to it, don't know if that is true or not.
-
.................Used horsehair and hide glue no problem. It makes good strings also..........bob

Alright then this is a challenge to any boyer interest. Call it a dare or a scientific experiement.
Lets see who can make the first hair backed bow.
-
Well, ummm, ::) ??? I guess I have to 'fess up.Marc,I'm the one that was supposed to send you the horse hair.I went to get it,the horse got groomed and the hair thrown away before I got there.By the time the horse got groomed again,I forgot.Man, that was about two years ago :-[

Well, Mullet. Just this evening, I ordered a pound of horsehair from a horsehair dealer, naturally. This is for horsehair rope for my siege engines, but who knows what else I can do with it. About 30 bucks per pound, but you can order half pounds.
How about human hair? I found some global trading sites that you can contact Asian human hair dealers from. Not sure what to think of that yet. Macabre, maybe? Were the donors living or dead? In antiquity, the best engine ropes were supposedly made from women's hair.

Oh boy, now you've done it -- my wife is going to kill me when our horses start "losing" hair now..... like it isnt enough, me going to the hills all the time coming home with more 'trees' and 'shoots', now I'll be trimming the horses....
Wanna buy some bundles??? :o (I'M KIDDING!)

Wapiti clip a bit of the wifes hair first, after you get out of the hospital she won't mind
you clipping the horses hair >:D
-
That's ok Eddie. Too many projects on the go anyway.
-
I believe Crazy Crow sells bundles of horsehair. Pat
-
crazy crow?
-
Add a .com to that and see what you get. ;D Pat
-
Oh nice they have some good stuff there.
-
I haven't tried to glue horse hair with hide glue but being both are made up of protein, it should work!
-
Well, guys, here is that horse hair I said I had ordered. Check it out. This is a 1 lb, 27" - 29" bundle of mixed color tail hair. I dont want to post the name of the vendor, unless it is okay with the mods, as I don't think they are advertisers. This cost me 36.00 total. Sorry about the lousy quality of the photos.
This stuff will become rope, but I think the idea is intriquing, and may try backing a bow horse hair and hide glue one day.
