I was wondering around a local flea market today and found some OLLDDD Osage billets. One set is glued and spliced up and another already has the splice cut in.The glued up set has a old painted on makers make(SA).Both sets are chased to a ring and red brown.(Seasoned)An elderly lady was trying to sell them and thought they were cherry..They are most deffinatly well seasoned Osage..I know back in the early 1900"s before fiberglass, companies used to market finished Osage and Yew bows, But I've never seen or heard of them being offered as a do it yourself kinda deal..She wanted 15 bucks a set..I wanted to get some info before I bought them..I doubt anyone else will jump on them..
-
I'll give you $15.95 a set for them unseen....shipped. ;D If they are really osage and decent sets of billets and glue-up they would easily be worth $15 per set. I know you could buy bow staves back in the old days and would imaging billets also. Did the woman not know more about their history?
-
Go back and get them. For $15 its worth it.
-
GO GET THEM!!!!!!!!
-
Shoot I will give you $25 for em.
-
Where is this flea market >:D
-
Where does this lady live? I want to get my hands on some orange gold....
>:D
$30 for them >:D
-
I went back and got them..The lady thought they were for making pool cues..I gave her 50 for them..They were her late husbands...They were in the attic of his woodworking shop..She said he had never shot archery that she could remember...Then again she was 93..so who knows..They are definitely Osage..I already glued the billets up with Epoxy..Surprisingly the fit was still decent even after so many years...

Did you sand or plane the surfaces first? Else I will be ROFLMAO when it blows up in the handle.

Well guys unfortunately our internet has been out for a few days...I got the bow tillered out to 25 and flipped the tips..They got some nice hooks now...I'm going old school with this one a, making a classic 1920's era Osage bow..Long with flipped tips..Simple and clean...I'll get some pics up soonish....
-
Sounds perfect. Looking forward to the pics.
-
Oh Squirrell...I was wondering how you would go about "Planing" a splice joint...I did sand it so both joints fit really well...I did use a gap filling glue tho...This wasn't my first splice job.....
-

OK, I'm forming a posse and we're ridin' to Hickory Bill's homestead. When we get there we'll all admire, fondle and shoot his bow. If he says anything, we'll just whack him in the head with it. Who's with me? We ride at sunrise. >:D

Hahaha that made me laugh way to much lol
-
Well here is the bow..I haven't got a full draw yet..But I figured I better get a few pics up before I got lynched and strung up by the posse..Me a and Outbackbob shot a 3d course today and this bow performed flawless..The bow is 68 tip to tip(with a small amount of natural deflex, but with the flipped tips she stands dead straight) She pulls 55#@27 and is real smooth, quiet, and fast....Bob can atest to that..I was going for an old style longbow from the early 1900's, since that's what the wood was intended for with the original bowyers...I named the bow "Old School"...Hope ya like...Gitty Up!

-
That bow is beautifull! I just picked up a 50#, real old hickory backed osage at the Flea Market Sunday.
-
Really cool! Been following this post since the beginning. Old Osage is magical!
-
Great job HickoryBill. Thats a special bow there and you crafted it into exactly what those old billets should be. I think if I ever had the
opportunity to shoot that bow it would feel like shooting a piece of history. Kinda sorry that posse didn't ride out fast enough, I could of
joined up and had that opportunity then.
-
I'll be bringing this one to the Classic next year...Anyone with a 27" or shorter draw can shoot er!
-
woohoo That counts me in. Only 26" draw. I gotta feeling it's going to be like waiting in line to ride a roll-a-coaster, though.
Now, what to do with all this hangin' rope. ;)
-
I'm second in line to shoot it. No way my T-rex arms will overdraw it ;)
Only one word comes to mind with that bow.....Classy. Well done Bill
-
some fellar up in the wild blue yonder is probably smileing down on you .
