My buddy robert(paleoninja on here) is moving out of state and gave me a short osage stave that had a tiny bit of twist to it. The back is violated in spots and i plan on sinew backing it when i get the funds or some goods worth trading. It ended up being 50 to 55# @ 25", i think im only drawing 22" in the pic. The tips have a little bit of natural reflex which makes them look stiff when drawn. Still need to make a grip for it. This is my first successful osage shortie, first one broke.

Nice effort on a short piece of wood. I don't want to be a buzz kill but the tiller is off a tad and I would personally fix it before drawing it much more. The violations on the back are feathered out enough, but I would absolutely back it before bending it more as well. The top limb is flat from the inner third out. The bottom limb is flat coming out of the handle to the inner third. Just a little work and you'll be bending good. If you don't have sinew to back it with a rawhide dog chew would be fine on that short of a bow. Don't take what I've said negatively. I like seeing short bows bend good and you are almost there.
-
Thanks jon, this one is going in the closet until i get some sinew and ofcourse be retillered.
-
I got to agree with JonW, It also looks to be braced pretty high, on my short bows the brace is only maybe 5", still it's looking good and the brace height is a personal thing, your coming along real good with your bows
-
Thanks bubby.
I was really anxious to share what ive got so far.

your doing good keep up the good work and show off your efforts
-
Shorties can be tuff to tiller, think circle. Keep up the good work.
-
Just love Osage shorties. Thanks for taking to share your work in progress. Looking forward to seeing finished bow but always like seeing them in progress.
-
I like it. And yea, don't pull it anymore. I have some "leftover" sinew in various stages of length that would be perfect for a project like that. If you want it I'll give it to you, just PM me your address.
-
Nice sapling bow there. The belly is full of little knots.Got one here too that I like.
-
Good to see a short hedgeapple/osage bow on here! I've been working on one that's about the same length as yours, and thought I must be crazy to try it. Keep us posted on your progress when you've put the backing on.
-
I was gifted some sinew by a very generous man on here. With the help of bryce's building a long and my friend paleoninja i got the first layer of sinew on.
On the next layer im gonna make the strands thinner, i dont like how thick they look.

Your not wasting any time processing that sinew are you LOL it looks good can't wait to see it finished.
Rob

Wow. THat was fast! Nice sinew backing.
I have never tried that. linen works for holding down stuff well IF you apply multiple layers.
Looks to me like you have a beginning of a hinge in the bottom midlimb.
Nice bow! I like seeing osage bows(although I may never make one)
-
Lol i was really anxious to get started. I cant wait to finish it :)

Lol i was really anxious to get started. I cant wait to finish it :)
Lol I hear ya on that don't get to excited and mess something up like I have done to many times lol
-
That should be a super sweet short bow. I like the short sinew backed bows. I made a very similar one the exact same length a couple of years ago. I'm finishing up a 52" sinewed bow now.
-
Thats the last thing i wanna do.

Nice, do you have any pics of it?

Here is the 49" bow
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,33741.0.html
I only have a few cell phone pics of the one I am working on.
This was during tillering. I got it bending more in the handle area now.
I narrowed the handle to a little less than 3/4" wide and deep. It starts to bend at full draw.
Here is an early braced picture

I'm working on the finishing details now.

Wow, those are both awesome bows. Im still not sure how i wanna finish this one yet
-
Thanks.

OO, a cut in handle, bendy handle bow is a tough nut to crack. You actually need to tiller through the handle. My mentor, GMC, was the master of it IMO. Do a search of GMC to see some of his bows. I've shot many of them, locust, hedge and mulberry. They chrono-ed between 170 to mid 180's. Super fast, super flat and super smooth. You in up with the thickest portion of the handle being about where you hand touches the bow, then tapers from there out about 1/2 to 3/4" passed the fades. His method of operation was to get the bow bending evenly while making sure it was bending at the fades slightly. Then with 3 to 4 inches left to target draw length he'd work on getting the handle to bend (if I remember correctly. I was a very green newby at the time)
-
Does the handle take set? I mean does it take noticable set?
That sounds incredibly diffucult but very cool. 180 FPS with a straight stave bow? Wow.
-
TSS, I suppose the handle could take set just like any other moving part of the bow. Set happens. If you start with 3" of reflex and end up with 2" of reflex, you still have an 1" of set. GMC's bow generally weren't as short usually 58-62" and drawing to 28" You could feel the handle bend the last 2 inches of the draw.
Here's some GMC bows

Here's what GMC had to say about this design, taken from the last link
that handle area is built to bend, that's why its thin. The limbs are a little over 1/2 in thickness but this wood is super dense for locust. I could have gotten bye with a more narrow limb width but would rather error on the side of width with Locust holding a flat belly. This design is what I call a cut-in bend through the handle. The cut-in part allows me to maintain the limb width needed and still reduce paradox for the arrow. Its the best of both bendy/ stiff handle designs IMO. Its also a challenge to pull off, the hardest design that I know to tiller, but when its s right seems to perform quite well ;D. The downside would be creating a stress point, center of the bow (handle area) making it the most likely to brake, also. I've got a Hickory having a bad hair day to prove it. ::) Those are 3'' fades. Thanks for the nice comment on the bow. ;)
-
That's soo cool!
Maybe...
Expect some locust in a few months if school doesn't interfere ;)
-
Clint, I hope you didn't think I was trying to put down your bow. It's awesome. You know I love your work and love the OO bow hanging in my rack. :) I was just trying to point out another way to skin this cat.
Dave
-
I knew you weren't Dave :) And I wouldn't have cared even if you did. You are right about there being more than one way to skin a cat, or a bow for that matter. Thanks for posting those links.
Bowman53, I'm looking forward to seeing your bow all finished up.
-
After four weeks the bow pulled up 3" of reflex, but also twisted the bow alot too. Tillering was very frustrating, i finally ended up going by feel instead of actually looking at it. Turned out to be the most dead in the hand bow ive tillered so far. Got it to around 60#@23" . And holy bow god is this thing quick. Im putting on skins tonight.

I bet that little thing does fire an arrow pretty quick. Turned out great! Can't wait to see it all skinned up.
-
Excuse my messy backyard, making bows is more fun than cleaning >:D
-
Just seen this one, very nice, looking forward to seeing it all dolled up. :)
Pappy

Thank you mister pappy. I'm at work till 5 and this bow just won't get out of my mind, I cant wait to get home.

Well this little lady has her make up on now. three pieces of Copperhead skins and 4 layers of shellac. I did accidentally rip the skin while removing the scales but oh well, ill be careful next time. Since this one is my first sinew backed osage shortie, she needs a name, any suggestions?
(full draw is one the page before this one)

Always a bridesmaid never a bride. It is a beautiful bow I can't blame you for wanting to hang on tightly to that one, it is definitely a "you can have it when you pry my cold dead fingers from around it" bow.

This makes me more optimistic with my snakey little turd of a stave. 52" ain't much to work with. I just finished chasing the grain. It'sy first bow and I'm sure it will break. But I gotta try. And the two short osage bows posted recently leaves me hopeful. Mine has an S shape. When laying it out should I just take the taper off one side to sort of straighten it? I'm at a loss ATM. Very nice bow. I really like the shorties. But my 30" draw says otherwise :0(
