Here is the stave I'm working on currently. It's 60" long and 1.75 inches wide although I'm going for 1.5". Its got lots of knots on the top limb and a few on the bottom. Looking forward to this challenge. Also, any idea what wood it is? Just curious, I don't exactly know but it looks like good springy stuff.
-
Ok, this wood is Laburnum
-
Leave all the width you can and still get "shoulders".
-
so just take a tiny bit off the sides to create shoulders? I've read that it works like osage and is similar in strength. Its still got a bit of weight to drop because it's around 2 lbs 7 ounces.
-
At only 58" ntn you will need all the width you can get. Get it to a heavy floor tiller, then square up the sides a bit to create shoulders.
-
sounds like a plan, although I was thinking, do I have to take an inch off either end or could I do pin nocks and save some length?
-
Pins take just as much length up. Do whatever style nocks your comfortable with.
-
ok, so I should make it bendy handle and get as much of it bending as possible right? I know it doesn't have to be that way but I also know I can push a bit more out of it if I get as much of it working as possible.
-
A bendy would be easier for you to see and tiller.

Try wrapping some sinew over a piece of thick leather/rawhide glued to the back 1/2 in from the end. It makes a useable nock for a not too heavy bow. I did it to a super short minibow(I am taking it on vacation).
I just got told agian that bendy handle is better by someone.
-
I should have an update on my progress tomorrow. I have a friend coming over to finish his bow and start another one as a sinew backed. I will also sinew up an ERC and maybe rough out a HHB that I was supposed to have finished for my friends birthday on the second. I will take plenty of pics and post them.

Should be an interesting build, lots of character to deal with. :) Looking forward to seeing this progess. :)

Heart shaped with point/ ridges all around the edges?

Nope, it looks like this. Its most certainly this because it flowers exactly like it. http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=LAAN2&photoID=laan2_005_avp.tif

If it is laburnum make sure you wear a dust mask! It's even worse to breathe in than yew as far as I know.
-
All parts of Laburnum are poisonous.

Hard to misidentify a Laburnum tree. It looks like that stave is mostly sapwood, is that right?
