Title: Osage bow :)
Post by: Cardboard_Duck on June 15, 2013, 01:51:59 pm
Pearl Drums showed up at my tent at the classic and threw a nice seasoned piece of osage at me. I've been slacking on the whole bow making thing ever since I found out making knives is so much fun :)

Anyways, I managed to split the piece he gave me into these-

I chose the one on the left to be my first victim. It was actually really twisty and bumpy, but after two sessions on my caul this is what I have so far (This is my second osage so don't expect too much...)

5" brace
(http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q744/cardboard_duck/WP_20130615_004_zps63fb990d.jpg)

Drawn to about 27ish I think
(http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q744/cardboard_duck/WP_20130615_005_zps5ef65625.jpg)

I still have to thin out the tips and pretty it up a little (which isn't much for me, I don't mind a few gouges or tool marks since its a tool and not a showpiece  :o )

Right now it is about #55 at 28". 66" TtT and about 1.375 to 1.5 to whatever wide. There were some knots and stuff to go around and chop out so the width isn't really important  ;D

How does the tiller look?

I think the tiller is spot on. Nice work.

You're a bit stiff midway on top duck. Bottom looks good.

10-4, I'll take a few more scrapes off the top limb, I see it now. It's weird, the stiff spot is the thinnest part....

Pearly- you must of really been slipping at the classic! :o.  Everything you did while you were there was completely devastating to your rep! >:D. Good of you man!
BTW- its looking good Nick!  Josh

Dang it! I didn't know you were at the Classic. I'm going to a laid back Bow shoot in the morning if you want to go. 646-6121. $5, shoot 40 targets, no scoring, and free lunch. ;D

It's just sanded to 220, 0000 Steel wool and then I gave it the bees wax and orange oil bath. I think I got the flat spot as good as I am going to, there was a kink in that spot originally that I heated out. It ended up about #48 @ 28" after the fixing attempt and sanding. Oh and the tips are Brazilian walnut and the handle is jute, I love jute wrapped handles :)

Nice character bow! I wish Osage grow here! But it grows far at the South in another country.

Sweet rig duck. Now you gotta' get after that other half and give your new bow a playmate! Bows don't like to be alone man.

Well I got to surprise my brother and gave it to him at our family reunion on satuday :) He was stoked and plans on making meat with it this fall. I had some pictures of him with it but lost my camera... Oh well.

Thanks BB :)

He told me he has put at least forty arrows a day through it and feeling more accurate each time ( he normally shoots one of those new fangled wheeley bows )
