so our friend ALWAYSE brings us wine in a blue bottle when he comes for dinner/visits.
I ALWAYSE save the bottoms. I have 3 now and I'd like to cut them in 1/2 so that I can make 6 points. What is the best way to do that with out killing ones self? I have a tile snapping tool with a glass cutting disk but because it's curved I'm cautious to try and use that. i thought about a dremil toll but the idea of fine glass dust is scary to me.
Suggestions or advice?
As I write this Irealized that the local university has a glass blowing studio and I'm friendly with that professor. I could have asked him to flatten the bottles also.
Well next time.

I don't see a problem with the saw. Dull the edges first and cut away, slowly. The snapping tool might work too if you can follow the contour and get close enough to the edges. My first inclination would be just to forget about cutting them down and drink more wine if you want more bottoms. If you have a recycling bin in your area, you can pull bottles from there. I brew beer and that's how I got all my bottles.

I use a little tile saw, you can get a diamond blade for a skillsaw and cut it just wear a mask and glasses

In the following video, I cut bottle bottoms in half:

I was going to upload this one to youtube just now but it said it was going to take about 10 hours... ::)

Jackcrafty (Pat Blank) has his video on youtube, under allergichobbit. It shows how easily glass can be cut and snapped.

If you are worried about glass dust look at somebody abrading at night with a light on. I bet that would really scare you. Every time you abrade or hit a rock you make silica dust which is the same as glass dust.

This is how I do it...
1. Place large nail in bottle
2. Place thumb over mouth of bottle
3. Stand over soft ground
4. Quickly shake bottle up and down while turning head and praying ;)
5. Bottom should pop off... Works 9 out of 10 times...
Good luck!
