Title: Damar Resin
Post by: RobertofGwent on June 29, 2013, 06:44:03 pm
So I've just ordered some Damar resin crytals off the interweb in order to make a medieval compound for proofing my fletch wrapping against the weather etc. I've got a recipe that provides the proportions of the various ingredients. One question that springs to mind: what do I do with the resin crystals - grind them into powder?

I am going to guess yes, because if you want to mix them with stuff you need to grind them to powder or melt them.

Use a 1:1 mix of damar and pure gum turpentine (it must be pure gum turps).
Put the crystals in a muslin bag and suspend the bag of crystals in the turps.
Simple  :)

I believe you are making damar varnish... you can also check a fine arts supply store... damar is a traditional varnish for oil painting.  As others said, dissolve the crystals in pure gum turps.  You will probably want it slightly thicker for your purposes... it can crack though...
