In the book "Hunting with the Bow and Arrow" Saxon Pope describes the demensions of his favorite yew hunting bow and describes how to make the weapon. By reading this book and taking the tillering measurements from John strunks longbow in tbb1 I was able to make what I believe to be a replica but modernized version of Saxon's "Old Horrible" though his was 70#+ I cannot shoot that comfortably so I dropped the weight a bit. This bow was my first longbow and also my first take down. When building I planned to give it away but while shooting it in I fell in love with its accuracy.
Also added a bit of sturgeon i had leftover, and pulled a page out of the Gordon handbook and added them as accents.
Thanks to Carson@Echo Archery for the 30+yr.old billets and bison horn.
70" NTN 62#@28" rawhide backed.

That's a sweet looking bow, my friend. I really love how the longbows shoot as well. Nice work, I cant wait to get my take down bow finished now.
-
Love it. Fine job. Very cool story and the Gordon handbook was well played. Looks like it shoots like a dream. If you change your mind on giving away Ill send you my address >:D
-
That is a nice bow Bryce. I'm not usually a long bow guy, but something about a takedown appeals to me.
-
Very nice bow
-
Wow Pinecone, that is one beautiful bow! Awesome quiver too. What material is that arrow-pass, also sturgeon?
-
Really nice. Bryce, did you heat treat. Just curious.
-
Very nice Bryce!
-
Can't blame you for not wanting to get rid of it sharp looking bow.
-
If you ever get bored with that lump of poo-poo, you could send it to me. 8) 8)
-
Nice bow Bryce! I like the sturgeon skin.
-
SWEET! Is that the set of billets that you chiseled out of Carson when i was there? If so, it sure didn't take you long to put em to work! Josh
-
Thanks weylin :) you need to finish that thing. It's nice know if I needed to I could pull this apart and throw it in my pack.
Thanks Matt, yeah it shoots real nice.
Thanks jonw, I don't like longbows either but this as a TD works.
Hey! Thanks Marc :)
Thanks accipiter, it's inlayed abalone.
Thank you Steve:)
Thank you mr Cody
Thanks rob:)
Adb, thanks for the compliment but I think this one will stay here for awhile at least.
Thanks mr outlaw it's my favorite type of skin, they just recently closed fishing for sturgeon for the next (i think) 5 years. Which is a bummer.
Thanks josh! Yep there the same pair :)
-
Well executed Bryce. I believe you have made the old man proud!
-
Man, you just keep puttin out the awesome bows. Nice work!
-
Great lookin' stik there Bryce. Way to honor the Heritage. Bob
-

-
Cool brycey boy...its hard to beat the smoothness and accuracy of a yew longbow(70"+) imo
-
Sweet take-down, Bryce. She's got a really nice bend. I like those tips, too!!
-
Another Yew Beaut Bryce, keep 'em comin man, one of these days we'll even find you some yew wood arrows to go with those works of art :)
-
Thanks Gordon, I hope so
Thanks Marco
Thank you Cham
Thanks Danny, yeah there actually pretty easy to make.
Yeah blacky I shot a group the size of my fist at 20 yards and I decided this on might never leave my house. Thank you.
Thanks coos! I have a couple yew bolts drying but there a little as far as premium quality.
Thanks again guys
-
man, that is nice...wish I had more yew ;)
-
A classic, well done Bryce.
-
Very Classy. 8) I can't wait to see it in person. You sure did make quick work of those billets. Well done.
-
That is friggin perfect!!! I love it! Makes me want to try some yew :)
-
You know, that is one sweet bow! Not sure when I will get a hold of yew in any quantity but I look forward to that day mostly because you make it look so very nice!
-
Great bow Bryce. now go shoot some pinecones.
-
Nice bow Brycey boy! I bet the yew feels good with the extra weight added by the sleeves. Yellow wood can get heavy.
-
As always, a work of art!
-
Beautiful bow,very nice work. :)
Pappy
-

-
Nice bow! Ed
-
sweet work. great job
-
This one's worth a second look.Beautiful bow.Construction and finish work. You did the original justice I'd say.Funny how it's even more fun shooting when the groups get closer and closer. That still is plenty stout of a bow poundage wise.
-
That's one beautiful bow Bryce! You are for sure a master of the craft! I love the look of that thick sapwood contrasting with the dark heartwood! Again, great work on a true masterpiece!
Dale

Hey wow! Thanks everyone for the positive feed back. I'm glad you all like this bad boy. Been shooting it all day, what a sight watching arrows fly off this stick.
Thanks again guys.
I really suggest reading Popes book. Very good read!

-
Lol thanks guys!
Dave, your really too nice. But thank you:)
-
I hope the intended recipient doesn't know this was the bow you were going to send them. There likely to go out and jump in front of a speeding bear.
What a bow Bryce! I have really become a fan of the sturgeon. That's just what the Dr. ordered.

Man I'm glad I found this one. I almost missed this beauty. Great job. Love those tools and grip.

Gorgeous bow, I admire your work!
-
Dont know how i missed this one..
Beautiful bow!
I hope the intended recipient doesn't know this was the bow you were going to send them. There likely to go out and jump in front of a speeding bear.
Bryan
And i agree with the above...even if i never heard of a speeding bear before :o
-
Hey thanks again guy. This was not my trade bow. Made bc I wanted to shoot a WLB:)
-
Awesome bow Bryce. I can see why you fell in love with it. I have a few more take down sleeves and a few more yew billets so I am going to make myself one as well after the fall hunting season is over. tips are really stunning as well.
-
Hey thanks! The TD part if a longbow was really appealing to me bc it difficult to pack a bow that's six foot long and gets snagged or whatever. This way it busts down and slides in the pack or quiver
-
Congrats little bro! Now you need the bear! I really like the overlay too!
-
Thank bud! Yeah I've been trying if all I got this year was a good size bear I would be satisfied.
