Title: Kayak Camping the Econlockhatchee
Post by: PrimitiveTim on July 20, 2013, 08:56:47 pm
Earlier this week I decided to do some kayak camping/scouting to a part of a river I had never been to before.  I grabbed my backpack and hopped in my kayak and paddled off.  I made a video.  I hope y'all enjoy!

Cool video Tim!
It reminded me of canoe trips I've been on in the past.
Looked like a lot of fun.

Cool video, Tim. I haven't been down that river in years. I also didn't realize that Caracara's were that far north.

Thanks guys!

Mullet, they only go this far north on the st. johns river floodplain.  It's still a pretty sweet river with a healthy population of healthy gators. lol

I wish I had permits for gators on the St. Johns.

     Cool!
No!  I will not go gator hunting in a kayak!  I want to be way above them, not eye to eye.
I don't even want to just be in and amongst them in a kayak!  Pretty cool!  Oh, Eddie, speaking of Cara Cara's , I was talking to Tim Falter, and guess who came by his station, seeking information about who owned the property behind the station, which has had a nesting pair of Cara Cara's for some time?  Joe Hutto!  Tim didn't recognize him at first, but when he handed him his card, and it had his picture with a turkey sitting on his head, he immediately said "You're the Turkey guy!"  Sure enough it was him, and they talked for awhile.  He wants to do some photography on the Cara Cara's.  He said they are very endangered.  Never knew they were endangered, just protected, as I see them all the time around Okeechobee, and on SR 60.
Great  Video PT!  Thanks.

The species as a whole is not endangered but the subspecies here in Florida is federally threatened.  A species can get protection when it is in decline.

I can show him a bunch down south, just go to a garbage dump. They are teamed up with the eagles and  ospreys fighting the buzzards for chicken bones.
