Title: Slender HHB Selfbow
Post by: Slackbunny on July 20, 2013, 10:06:48 pm
Well I after a long dry spell without producing a single hunting weight bow, I finally pulled myself together and got one finished up. It's a 50 pound @ 28 inch hophornbeam selfbow. Its 61 inches tip to tip, and is only 1 & 3/8 inches wide at the widest point. I added a leather grip with a floppy rest. I'd heated in a bit of reflex (some of the charing is still visible on the upper limb) and it settled out to having about an inch and a half of set.

I had my doubts about this bow right from the start. The stave I started from was a side split off of a bigger stave that didn't work out. It was just barely larger than the final product when I started. But it just wanted to be a bow and gave me very few problems throughout the build. Everything just seemed to line up this time.

Its the fastest bow I've built, and I have to admit I'm having a hard time dealing with the fact that I am giving this bow away. A buddy of mine gave me a bunch of ash last year and I told him I'd build him a bow in thanks. Its past time I made good on that promise.

Here's the pics.

I've got some that are 33 inches long and some that are 31. Not sure which type is in those pictures.

Oh its not my first, shoulda made that clearer. I've made five or six before. I'd just gone nine months without any success on a hunting weight bow. I broke a few and had a few take excessive set and come in under weight and had a whole slew of other problems. Its just a relief to finally get one whipped out again.
