Title: Trade bow, honoring J.J. Cale's most famous song
Post by: JW_Halverson on August 14, 2013, 11:44:41 pm
J.J. Cale died a day or so before my trade bow also died.  He wrote a lot of great songs, particularly those made famous by Eric Clapton.

So there I was in bed, unable to sleep, sure as all get-out I would miss the deadline.  I know how slow I am making bows these days and how busy the following 10 days would be.  I could not sleep, so I got up and wandered into the garage.  I turned on the oldies station and found a scrap of osage.  I heard Eric Clapton doing "After Midnight" almost right away and I let'er all hang out.

Around 10:00 the next morning I had her tillered almost to full draw.  Over the next few days I got horn nocks installed, finished tiller, laid up finish and put her to rest while I made a 4 day road trip to North Dakota for a couple of programs for the Black HIlls Raptor Center along with a side trip to participate in the 60th anniversary party for my parents.

She's finished and in a piece of pvc pipe ready to ship.

Decided to do a handle wrap to match the black tips.  And since last week was the Sturgis Motorhome Rally and Trailor Races, I decided to fancy up things on the grip with some black leather fringe.

Cool bow and story, John.  JJ Cale has been one of my favorites for 40 years.

Not really Hammy.  No fiberglass reinforced plastic on these.  I learned my lessons.  I have been humbled and the Bow Gods have smiled on me.

In fact, they blessed me because the last bow was very underweight.  This one came in at 50# at 26".  I got enough limb length so that someone could comfortably pull a little extra just in case.

I cannot tell you the sheer mental relief it is to be able to say this:

SHIPPED!

I can no longer do anything to mess this bow up.

Trains don't run forever
fire goes out some time

He's come to the end of the line. Great musician and songwriter, there was none alike.

great story. Funny how it works like that sometimes, you can spend ages on something and it just don't click. Another time when the mood is right it just flows.

My doctor advised me he will no longer provide care for me after the last surgery on my nose due to coke abuse.  I fooled him, I switched from cans to bottles so that the pull tabs can't hurt me!!!

JW,

The bow looks great and the tiller is spot on, your second guessing. reminded me of Mickey Lotz commenting on a discussion of well know bowyers about a bow's tiller it went something along the lines of   " Those fellas could find a flat spot on a hulahoop".

Well done!
