Title: mahogany?
Post by: AH on August 22, 2013, 10:26:08 pm
has anyone here ever used mahogany to make a bow? I haven't heard of it being used as a bow wood, and it's pretty common and cheap at my local stores. I've heard some people say it's too soft, just like poplar, but hey, Ryoon made a poplar bow. ;D
When I found this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mahagony-black-locust-Warbow-English-Longbow-88-lbs-28-/271258712612?pt=UK_Archery&hash=item3f28477a24
I thought mahogany's got to be good in compression to handle a warbow design.. ???

Lots of different types of mahogany, some not true mahoganies. Old growth stuff is supposed to be much denser than modern plantantion grown. That Polish bowyer(I can't think of his name) is pretty good, and has posted some nice bows recently(mainly yew).
I have never tried mahogany myself, and have usually heard what the other guys have said, in that it can be done, but not recommended.

Its a nice looking bow, well tillered, low string follow. Unusual combination, with a locust backing, seems to be doing well. The African Mahogany must be stronger than the South American stuff.
