Is there any way to tell if a wood is good in tension or compression or is it just an experience/ask somebody thing?

Do a bend test, take a thin slat and bend it a bit and watch how it recoils,if it springs back fairly straight it's good in compression.if you can bend it to almost 90 degress it tension strong.

So far I haven't found published tension statistics for wood although I can't imagine why it hasn't been tested ???. Here's an Excel spreadsheet with numbers from the Forest Products Laboratory.
