Got an opportunity to get some carp and buffalo skins this saturday with some fellas. They tell me the spot they go to they get 20 to 40 pounders regularly. If I get too many I'll post some up on the trading post.
-
Love me some bowfishin! Nothin else like it. Have fun and post pics.. Brian
-
I don't have a rig set up on any of my self bows yet for this.Hav'nt seen anything that suits me really and hav'nt dwelled on it seriously to make something yet.I do deer, turkey, and rabbit hunt with em though.Maybe someone can show me.I live close enough to Missouri to say that I think......LOL.
-
I have made a couple of tape-on's onda lathe and they work good. It dont hafta be compicated. I use 100# braided catfish line. Several hundred yards for the same price as 50 ft of 80# bowfishin line. I use 3/8 oak dowels and oversized bamboo garden stakes with factory bowfishin points most times.. Trade points work well for smaller fish.. However i do always have with me factory fg fishin arrows for big gar and grass carp... cuz they will shread a wooden arrow and the extra wieght helps punch thru those big scales.... Brian
-
Oh and come on over to the show me state... I'll take to a couple sweat spots ;)
-
You don't need a reel for bow fishing just tie the line to the boat or belt loop as long as your not sticking large gar you should be good. I stopped using reels on my bows a few years ago unless i want to shoot those 6ft gar i dont need it
-
If your ina boat your right Sterling... Im usually in waste deep weeds or wading inda water.... No reel = tangled, dangerous mess
-
I never had a problem with tangaling what size line are you using ?
-
I'll see what they'll be using.Think it will be off of a compound bow though. No matter.I'll figure it out cause I don't see any PICS........
I'll be sure to take some dead fish pictures skewred with an arrow.....LOL.If it's as hot a spot as they say.
-
80-100# braided catfish line. It works great. Im actually talkin bout foulin the line in the weeds and brush and such. I go to alot of backwater slews and often very (large) rocky areas where line layin onda ground just dont work and definately aint safe. When your line snags on a big rock or other hindrence the arrow snappin back atcha will make ya a solid gold dancer for a second, lol.... Good luck Beadman
-
Cool no worries koan i understand that. i normally use a conoe since we have alligators in The water i really dont want to be gater bait lol i was thinking i had a reel i took off of a training wheels bow and was thinking i could make a sholder strap or a belt strap to attach the reel to you so i dont have to lash to the primitive bow ;)
-
Sorry Ed... Im apperently not as smart as this smart fone.. Everytime i try to post the pic my dang iphone locks up.. ???
-
Sterling... Thats a cool idea!
-
Hey, Beadman give me a holler if Mo. is a bust ,and bring a fillet knife or two.
-
this is my rig Beadman.ams bowfishing reel with a strap on traditional mount.i can mount on any bow I have.selfbows included.best thing I have bought in a while.make sure that you use ams safty slides on your arrows.
-
Yeah that safety slide is a life saver
-
Hey Seabass, does that AMS system work as slick as it looks? I've been looking at those for a while now and they really seem to be slicker than duck wax. I especially like the way it spools the line in the bottle so there can be no kinks or twist.
-
JW,I shoot several tons of fish a year( no BS) we are infested with Aisian carp no trouble to shoot 150 20lb average a night some real bigboys. We shoot 45lb plus big heads on a regular basis. Probably 3 shots to a fish AMS reels are the ticket along with the grapple points that Seabass has in pic bullet proof setup. If your in alot or bigger fish I would go with gator line and a bigger bottle. The boat in the pic I posted is three foot deep and six foot wide. That was Sunday night 10pm-4am we shot 76 and had a few get off missed 20 more saw so many it was spooky. The AMS reel I use has had four years of that kind of shooting replaced drive wheel one time. They can be rebuilt for around $25.Check out HankParker west ky bow hunt/bighead bowfishing that would be me. If any of you guys ever want to try it shoot me a pm we could use the help as they are hard on a rivers ecosystem. Everyone needs to see 1000s of 20lb fish all flop at one time.

Wildman is correct.i used the old spool type reels for years.they do not comare to the ams.Jdub, the bottle style reel lets you shoot with no line resistance.i can't say enough of how much I love this setup.i still hand line the big fish in,but the reel will get the line in quick for a second shot.if you look around on the net,you can get a sweet deal on one of these reels.add the traditional mount and you can put it on any bow that you have.be sure to use the safty slides on your arrows.they have saved my bacon more than once.plus you can change your arrow quickly if you break a point.sorry that I am starting to sound like an infomercial, but it really love this setup.
-
I bought an AMS 2 yrs ago.. just had to have one.. Its still in the package, lol... One of these days I'll get it on a bow
-
get it on there Brian.you are missing out brother.i don't do a lot of modern stuff, but this reel I can't live without.it works like a charm.it made me a better bowfisherman, and that is no lie.my hit ratio doubled the first time out.i will never go back to the old spool type.i am starting to sound like an infomercial again.sorry,i just love this setup.
-
It's nice to hear about gear that WORKS rather than folks just carping about stuff that doesn't.
Good shooting Ed! Tear 'em up! If you get a few of them 40 pounders be sure to save the scales in case you gotta shingle your house.
-
I gotta get me one of them new fangled mounts... Brian
-
koan, just mail me that reel. I will give it a proper breaking in get the bugs out and such and it will smell wonderful when ya get it back! >:D
-
Sorry to hijack, but here is a good pic of my daughter and a pair of bigheads ;D
-
I would Wildman, but just like everything else layin round my house.. I might use it someday. 8)... Looks like i need to come your way to bowfish.. Them fish quite abit bigger than most bigheads I see round here ;)
-
Come on over,we have plenty!
-
Hey wildman do you eat them carp?
-
Bigheads are ok to eat.... The silver carp are outstanding..
-
Sterling, I honestly have never tried them. I know people that have. The sheer numbers are something to see I cannot begin to explain. We cut them up for catfish bait, trapping bait, and my hogs love them. I need to bring a cooler and save a few. I do love gar cakes awesome table fair. I really would love to get down there and get a big boy.

OK fellas.I'm gonna look up one of those ams rigs for my self bows.Looks like a sweet set up and thanks for the info. When I was a kid I used to stick tons of carp.During the spawn in the spring.Being a farmer I just used a pitch fork and threw em on land.Push em to the bottom of river or pond and go all the way through with the tines. The definition of shooting fish in a barrel.Easy Peasy.Shorts & tennis shoes.Fun times.I've smoked a bunch too. They're good. They don't compare to my fried bluegills and crappies though.I don't think here in southern Iowa that we're infested wiith those jumping carp yet.Glad of it too.I've seen on TV the degree of take over they have done in the Illionis river.Sickening and a big problem.
No numbers killed goal here just some skins to put on my bows and a little fun doing it.
-
Honestly, Ed! What CAN compare with a mess of fried bluegills or crappie??? They are kinda the gold standard of a fish fry.
Oh man, now you got me wanting them for breakfast. :(
-
Seems the bluegill feeds everybody over here. The predator bass and crappie, and the people too.The supposed wonderful fish frys at these resteraunts around the lake can't hold a candle to my bluegills.
-
Y'all makin me hungry ;)
-
Don't forget about the flats , bluegills are one of my favorite baits , I've chased the carp and gar around with a stick and string , posted a pic earlier this year of two carp and a sack of mushrooms .
-
Yea I've used em for flat head bait too.Hard to beat the little utility bluegill....LOL.
-
Only thing more fun than catching a mess of bluegills and fryin' them up is taking some kids out so they can catch a mess of bluegills!
