I'd find two billets. That's a nice stave.
-
I wouldnt cut it.
-
Nope!! A good set of billets are easier to find and cheaper than a nice full stave like that one.
-
man it's your stave if ya want a two pc cut it, bub
-
Heck no! I'd start looking for some well seasoned billets. They should be easy to find, and much less expensive than a replacement stave of the same caliber.
-
a good stave like that costs around 150.00 two good billets run about 60.00. But yes you can cut it if you want.
-
Well the question was "could you", not Would you, or even ,Should you. Lol
-
How about I buy two billets and trade ya ;0)
-
Heck no. Thats just bad economics lol.

No way
-
I could but I probably wouldn't!
I can get you some billets if you want.
-
I would find somebody with 4 billets and swap em for that one stave. then you get two take downs.
-
NO!! :o
There's at least 10 times as many pieces that make billets as there are pieces that make staves.
-
Thanks guys. Full length yew elb it will be.
I think I just needed assurance that it would be a waste, even though its the perfect size :(
Might take you up on that Mike if I cant find some my self.

No problems, plenty of yew (billets ;))round here!
-
Its never a waste if make what you truly want in the end.
-
Way to run against the herd Pearl. You wouldnt split that stave unless you had a once in a million hunt and you HAD to use a takedown or you couldnt go ,i get what your saying but really.? Lol
-
Really. If selling staves isn't your intent then what's the difference if he cuts it and gets the bow he wants from that wood. The value of billets compared to staves is nothing. It seems the folks that wouldn't cut it are concerned of its value. It has no value if its not being sold and he didn't buy it to begin with. Its value lies in the bow he wants from it.
-
Didnt read that into it (value uncut as opposed to cut) its a near perfect stave,if ya cut into billets and messit up youve lost alot, just make it into a bow as is and mess it up, you might just salvage a good looking weaker bow,, thats all i was getting at. Not trolling at all. O:)
-
i would just make the bow you want to make from it. either way whether its one single piece or a takedown your gona end up with a bow. :)
-
I'd leave it full length. My question is, what makes you think the sapwood needs thinning? Looks perfect to me. I wouldn't risk creating a weakness by reducing sapwood that's already as thin as that. Can't be more than 1/2" can it?
-
Send me that $200-$250 Yew stave and I'll send you a $60 set of Yew billets for your take down.
Heck I'll even pay shipping both ways...
>:D

Where do you shop Gus? Hahahaha

this seems to have turned into a mater of what it is worth if you had to buy it, worth is subjective to whoever has possesion of an object, if its yours and you really want to make it a t/d then its worth it, it is just a pc of wood, a very nice pc of wood but still just wood

+1,000
don't cut it, use billits.

I forget the name of the outfit up northwest... Online.
Their Primo Mary Rose style staves started at $225 and went up.
Their seconds were $40 and up...

personally I wouldn't cut it. Such a nice, long yew stave is just too nice, regardless of the $-value.
but that's just me. you do what you feel best :)

The picture is a little miss-leading the sapwood is over 3/4 inch thick in most places. Maybe warbow kind of weights would leave me with plenty of heartwood but at my kind of weight I would end up with just sapwood. Yew sapwood is one of those where you dont "have to" follow one ring, although I will try my best.
-
Gotcha. Yeah I agree with you if that's the case! Good luck with whatever you choose to do with it!

I tried to think of a good analogy for this question. Picture this scenario: You are a primitive man living in an area where there are very few arrow material long enough without sharp bends that will not straighten. You are in the process of making a basket of some sort using material about the same diameter of an arrow for the structure. You only need a 15" piece for the basket. Your walking and happen upon a rare shoot shaft that is 30" long and straight. Do you think this guy would cut arrow in half because he wants a basket? I think he will make an arrow out of that shaft and find more of the common 15" sticks for his basket.
lol i tried :)
