My wife informed me last week that my nephew's 5 th birthday was coming up and asked me if his bow was done. Oh crap says I! Not only was it not done, it wasn't started! I thought he was turning 4 and that I had another year. Time sure gets away from me these days. Luckily, I had a little piece of hickory along that i had already flipped the tips on to make a plains bow out of. I laid out the profile and went to work. I went with 1 1/8" width at the fades flatbow layout 46" ntn. The 46" ntn is the second part of the brainfart. After I got it tillered to 16#@18" I got to thinkin this is too long. Normally I make those first bows 36" not 46". I called my wife and asked her how tall my nephew is. 36" tall.....crap. I hope the bottom tip doesn't hit the ground when he shoots! I guess on a positive note, he ought to be able to use this for several years before he outgrows it. I still have all the finish work to do, but here is Max's first bow. Josh

Like that profile, braced pic shows good smooth tiller. That little bow should shoot real nice and smooth. Getting a little concerned about you Josh, you know losing your vision, memory and the random brainfarts. Hey a least you can still make a fine bow though. :D
-
Nice, I'm sure he'll like it. It's probably good you accidentally made it long anyway. I remember seriously abusing bows at that age. ::)
-
kids get tall real quick these days Josh.he will grow into it in no time.great job.
-
I wish my brainfarts looked that good ;D

I wish my brainfarts looked that good ;D
  +1

The bow is really nice. I'm sure he will cherish it....to the extent that boys that age can cherish. 👍

I hear ya Greg! Getting a little worried myself. This memory loss ain't supposed to start until you've accumulated a lifetimes worth a wisdom. That way you can afford to lose some. With it starting before I have acquired that wisdom, I'm gonna be in deficit pretty quick! Lol!
That's a very valid point Zion!
I hope so Steve!
Carson, Dbb- you guys don't have brainfarts do ya? I thought it was just me. Lol!
Thanks Slimbob! I do know what you mean!
Thanks for the kind words fellas! Josh

He'll have a big smile for quite awhile

I sure hope so Mitch!

Great profile there, very nice.
-
Cool josh...hey did ya forget about that osage stave strapped to the outside of your rig too  ..must be nuttin left of that thing by now
-
Nice! He will love it. Jawge
-
Very nice Josh,he will love that, That length should work fine for him. :) I would rather have them a little longer for kids anyway, seems a little smoother for them. :) :)
Pappy

Thanks John!
Thanks Dwardo!
Thanks Jawge!
That's another good point Pappy! I kinda like em long myself sometimes! Thanks !
Chris that little limb is at the house. By the end of the week on the trailer it was at 14 percent MC. There was rain in the forecast for the next week so I left it in the house to finish drying. The important part was that it didn't check. I'm pretty happy about that.
Thanks fellas! I appreciate the encouragement! Josh

Cool...I was curious as to what happened to it....glad it didn't go flying into the wind into someone's windshield .... sad to say it,but I'd be more concerned about my stave than the persons car it hit..lol
-
Nice job. That's about perfect length for the youngster. You'll have to show him how to shoot it and cant it a little if it seems too long.
-
Thanks Ed! He may have to cant it anyway. The only arrow shaft that i had even close to fitting that bow was some 5/16" poc that spined 30 to 35. That's the reason for the cut in shelf. I hope it works for him. I really don't like last minute rush jobs! Lol! Josh
-
I bet the little guy will be pleased as punch with his uncle's brain fart!
-
I think you'll be fine, 36" seems a little short for a 5 year old so i think he's due for a growth spurt anyway!
-
Thanks fellas! I reckon it'll have to work for him as I don't have time to make him another. Josh
