Can we get this stickied or would that not be ok? Most likely it would be good to have it on the first page.

Well I had started three or Four projects ahead of time as I was late last year, on finishing my Trade Bow and Christmas Trade.  :-[
I don't plan to repeat that Tardiness this year...
Got my Trade Bow out on time, and plan to have my Christmas Trade out on time as well...  O:)

So now I can finish all of the projects ahead of time and then take a month to decide which to send...   ;D

Let The Big Mare Run!

Is it wrong that I had my gift finished before I even knew the recipient?  >:D I started something a while back after signing up for the trade, thinking it might be appropriate for most primitive types, and turns out I think my guy might actually appreciate it.  I didn't know much about him before today.  It's funny how there are people on this forum that post regularly that we really don't notice or know anything about.  One more good thing about these trades I guess!

It is possible that this occurred through luck of the draw. It happened to me and RB last year, I got he name and he got mine. Funny how that happened.

its an easy mistake to make. lots of names and you have to make sure one name doesnt get someone who already has their name.

Maybe Someone should start a wish list, to give ideas for the trade?
We could give ideas of what we don't have, can use, or would like, draw length & # that kinda stuff. Knowing all the time what you get may not even be on your list. Your thoughts? Ed

Actually, anything that is hand made by anyone on this forum is what I like. I love to collect things that people have made. True artist and craftsmanship is what gets my blood going. It inspires me to build!

I'll  be picking up some leather later in the week which will allow me to get started on my gift, and last night I decided I'd better practice some stitching. I started work on a string keeper for the wife's bow. Right now I just have the boot. Learned that I probably want a) thinner leather and b) to pre-drill or punch some holes. Anyway, here's my stitches:

The front side came out pretty good, but the backside is pretty sloppy. Pre-drilling will likely help.

Black Locust

I actually started this a while back and it got put in the corner, after researching my victim I thought this would be a perfect time to get it finished up and put to use :)

On a side note, I know this isn't a "traditional" eastern woodlands, but It just looked too plain so I added some accents and I like how it turned out. Who's to say that they didn't add some personal touches back in the day ya know? Hope you like it.

i have the stone for the head of the war hammer and the stick to become the handle, my next step is to carve a groove in the granite. If any of you have tips on that i would love to hear them. should be getting some rawhide by the end of the month. I should have this project near finished by send date. I will be posting pics soon.

Took the words out of my mouth.  I did some granite quartzite floors and that was how I made all my cuts.  Go slow and let the grinder grind ;D

Some leather cut-outs:

Still have some edge clean up to do, gotta cut the longer strap piece a bit thinner as well. Then it is lots of hole punching, dying and stitching.

Got started on my project today,  flattened the back of an ash stave and narrowed it to 2 5/8" . Sealed it with paint cuz i couldn't find my can of shellac, and strapping it to a board To dry for about 5 weeks.

I'm seriously contemplating sending out a breech-clout.  Everyone deserves to feel the freedom to move as they please, unencumbered by heavy textile around their legs yet enjoying having the essentials guarded with soft linen or, better yet, buckskin.

Oh I love my breechclouts.  Wear 'em with a longhunter shirt and mocs on a hot day.  Once at a Rendezvous some woman pointed at me and in a very judgemental tone said, "You aren't wearing underwear!"  I replied, "Oh yes I am...started as a breechcloth but now it's a G-string!"

Sorry I haven't posted anything, I am working on getting some rawhide, I have the stone and the handle wood, mostly its just a matter of letting the wood dry and then attaching the stone to the stick with the rawhide. I may or may not have time to finish a very small celt but that's still debated in my mind because I may run out of time.

15th of January is the deadline. Remember that if you really don't have time for a major project to do something easy for your schedule but still very nice for the other person. For someone like me who is full engaged in college work I really don't have time to make a nice bow or set of knapped points, but I can make a warclub that looks good and is of quality using less of my time. It sounds lame but its what I can do, once I'm out of college I might have more time but this is what i have time for.

So I had my guy in Cali making part of my gift for me. He hired this lady to do all his shipping and stuff. So somehow said lady shipped my package to someone in Missouri, I live in New York. He signed for it and since it had his address on it he doesn't have to give it back. Soooo ups is sending someone to his house and seeing if he will relinquish the package. If not gotta wait for my buddy to do it again. FML

It's just part of what I'm making. It's not like in ordering him something. I think he'll be happy with it when I'm done. I'm also making something else. The first I'm comfortable making. The second I'm trying. And my name is Bruce not Blair lol. I build knives and have a master blade smith make my blades. I draw them pick the steel and he makes em. I get up all gussied up and sharp.

Got my quiver all stitched together. It isn't a work of art, but more of a work of effort. I'll have some pictures up tomorrow night. Depending on how late I have to work, I may stop buy the local Tandy to pick up some buckles and claps for the strap. Don't quite know what I'm going to end up doing for that. It was a lot of work doing all the stitching, and I don't know if leather working is up my alley, but it certainly wasn't the least fun I've ever had.

Here are a few pics of what I'll be sending out. I made my first GFA style quiver from an old bow quiver in 2006 when I went elk hunting with Little John(Kenneth). I made one for myself and one for Kenneth. It is a perfect hunting quiver for me! It is made from a bow quiver I got in a "give away". I took the bow bolt mounting brackets off and attached the hood and arrow gripper to a plank of ash, stained with medium brown leather dye and then added watersnake skin, 3 coats of Tru-Oil and a spray of satin poly. I then added the adjustable leather strap.

AWESOME quiver Pat!

and Anybody will love a gift of a board.

I'm gonna put together a care package of several things this year. The guy I have is a great craftsman and by deduction, seems to make nearly everything that I do PLUS and does a better job. I'm a bit bewildered this year.

Again, SWEET @$$ quiver Pat.

I am not a 1/4 of the craftsman the rest of you people are. Here is part of my gift box to my recipient.
3 discs of pure beeswax
3 knapped obsidian points
and a wallhanger warclub with my TwinToads t's in brass tacks and a knapped stone spike.

I still have to add a few adornments to the club and I will add a couple more supplies to the box This pales in comparison to  the other gifts made here. but hopefully my guy will enjoy

PROGRESS!!!  So after my first and second attempts at my Christmas Trade gift broke, I decided to try thinking of a plan B. I lost track somewhere and though and I think that I settled somewhere near plan Q,R, or S. I will be obtaining the rest of the raw materials I plan on including in my gift tomorrow, and last night I got one of the two handmade portions finished.

If I don't mess around too much, I may actually have it done before the early deadline!!! Go me.

Hint: I home my recipient likes cooking and/or eating.

My gift is completed and ready to go along with a few extras.
After I posted my gift the first time I found out my recipient was wrong handed   ::)  so I redid a few things... but all is good now.  ;)
I'll get a shipping box and have my gift ready for USPS on the 15th or soon after.
I have managed a few of these Christmas Exchanges and I am always pleased at the results, the gifts made, the talent and generosity of our participants. Thank you all and congratulations to the coordinators of this exchange for bringing it to a successful completion.

Some ladies at our old church in CA noted that our young daughter was reaching for candy with her left hand. I told them that whenever our daughter reached for something with the "Naughty hand" we would give it a little slap and it seemed to be working to fix the problem. They were horrified until my wife slapped my arm and told them I was full of it, LOL.

Good times.

Here is a dart holder atlatl I'm making as part of the package I plan to send to my recipient.
The dart has a holder shoulder at the nock which sits in a notched area to hold the dart against the spur. Conventional darts can be used with normal finger pressure to hold the dart back against the spur.
This works great. It is effortless to hold the atlatl with a dart loaded. The dart can't loose contact with the spur until it pivots out about 10 Deg. from hold position. Once the throw is started and the atlatl starts rotating up, the holder shoulder clears the holding groove and is only in contact with the spur until it launches.
The atlatl is about 24" long and the handle is rotated away from the thrower to help line up wrist bend within the swing. Made from an unknown kind of sapling that has leaves a lot like honey locust with bark that is very dark and smoothe except for lots of lighter colered goose bumps all over but spread out a little. The wood right under the bark is a dark grey with really bright yellow wood under that and a medium reddish brown and yellow striped heart wood. The pics don't do the wood justice.
The holder shoulder is a short piece of cane fitted snuggly over the end of the dart and rounded over a little on the rear. The notch in the atlatl could be made a shade deeper and a straight sides shoulder holder would work. The pic with dart nocks shows the one dart with a shoulder holder next to three regular darts.
I still gotta apply the finish and finish making some darts to send. The shafts are mostly straightened but lack fletching, finish and points.
I've had fun making the working dart holder and tried several diffrerant ways that would hold the dart but none came close to working as well as this dose.   Will post an update when I get more done with the set.     Terry

Couldn't find a suitable sized box last night, so brought the quiver to work with me today and I'll take it to the post office later on to get one all set up. Here's the pictures anyway:

Pretty plain-Jane when all was said and done, and my first real attempt at anything leather. Hopefully the recipient likes it.

EDIT: Got the pictures working...

So my original plan all went to shit and I still haven't received the blade I had made. Luckily I'm used to my shitty luck and had a plan b, when that didn't work out I had plan c, then d and so on. Well I'm on plan w now and it's almost done. I'll put some pix when I get everything done up. I made a 4 1/2" two finger skinner from a surgical steel blade I had made awhile ago. Almost a neck knife. More for display. But is still very sharp and functional. Hopefully my guy likes it

Saweeeet! I have a 4' piece of jackhammer bit. Is that good to forge?
Title: Re: '13 XMAS TRADE WORKS IN PROGRESS
Post by: killir duck on December 20, 2013, 11:07:15 pm
jack bits are usually d-7 tool steel which is a super tough steel but a pain in the butt to forge unless you've got a power hammer, it's especialy good for tools like punches, hot cutters and hardies.

So I really hope he likes it. I'm also including some raw materials like I first intended. I have to button one more thing up and then it's in a box and gone.

Sorry Jordan, just think of the smile on the persons faces getting it. And u can always make another one. That's how I'm trying to think of it any whoo

Put a finish on the atlatl and it seemed too slick to hold so I put a leather handle cover with sinew end wraps and sinew lacing.
Built four darts and decided they needed foreshafts to be more versitle. That was pretty tough. Never done foreshafts before but they are working real well.
I made four with hardwood target/feild points that have a small stainless rod in the middle for a sturdier tip. Then made four hrdwood shaft blunts capped with 22-250 rifle brass and a stainless screw in through the primer hole. I cut the cases off right at the shoulder to fit over the shaft.
I have one so far with a San Patrice St. Johns type stone point and plan to mount at least one more stone point on a foreshaft. depends on time.
I wrapped the front end of the darts with sinew and wrapped the turkey wing fletching with a small nylon string then sealed all the sinew and end wraps on fletching with super glue.
All I lack is a little writting and a leather lace hanging loop on the atlatl, and I have an idea for a wall mounted rack to hang the darts and atlatl, with holes across the top to hold all the foreshafts.
I will have her done in the next couple days and in the mail by Friday.
Happy new year!      Terry

I didn't get mailed Friday like I thought. Wall rack took longer than anticipated, but that give me more time today to make some more foreshafts.
Eveything is packaged except the newest foreshafts which will need the sinew wrapping sealed tommorow then they will go in the box and I will mail it Monday for sure.
Here's some pics.

and more pics. The new foreshafts are two side notched stone points, two 6 prong judo type points, and a steel trade point made frao a circular saw blade with single beveled cutting edges.
Along with the other stone point four blunts and four target points there's a good selection of foreshafts to go along with the four darts.
Then I threw in some wall hangers to hang the holder, in case the recipient wants to hang it on a sheetrock wall. A few backstrap sinew pieces are in there too.
I have one more idea that would really fit my recipient that I may work on tommorow and throw that in too since I have an extra day now before I can mail it on Monday.

Thanks! Ionicmuffin.
It's been fun making all this. I started out with a differant plan and it wasn't going like I wanted, then I studied my recipient some more and thought that this would be a good present for him.
I kept coming up with ideas to try to improve it as I went and just had to include them which has made me run in closer to the deadline than I would have liked, but I'm satisfied with the way it has gone and I'm pretty sure my recipient will have some good times with the atlatl set. That's what has kept me going on it and just made it a very enjoyable project.

Alright! here is my current status and work on the knife! I have to put at least 2 more coats of true oil on this knife before I send it, I also have to finish the surface of the blade and sharpen it. then I need to make a sheath and send it off! Tons to do and 4-5 days before I need to be done!

In the middle of a family emergency, my youngest Son Elyas had his appendix out yesterday.
have my goodies finished, ready to box and ship.
As soon as I know the Lad is out of the Woods I'll get my recipient's package shipped.
Hopefully before or just after the January 15th.

Yes! I just finished sharpening the knife and its as polished as i can get it. My recipient if they have the tools and desire a better finish/sharpness can change it up, I dont have the tools to get it any further, by this i mean that there are still visible scratches but ive used all the way up to 2000 grit so nothing big, also the sharpness shaves paper but not shaving sharp. Ill be making a sheth and then sending it off.

Here's a sneak peak of my trade bow. I'm heat treating the belly over some open coals with Carson at our annual Rose City Bowyers New Year's gathering. Right now I'm putting some lipstick on it and getting it ready for the tru-oil. I'm liking this bow a lot. I hope my recipient does too.

Heh, yeah. He had a good time. Gordon took several good pictures of him that day.

He had fun shooting at the areal targets.

And then he decided to go off on his own and shoot at a target alone while I was heat treating my bow. He was very independent and determined about it. He's a good kid.

Well! I spent the day Sunday working on the other little something I wanted to send. It was so darn cold that glue and finish processes where extremely slow. So! While waiting around I got another idea and had just eniugh room in the box for it to fit so I worked on that too.
I managed to finish the first idea yesterday and the second one was already finished by then, so I boxed it all up and got it in the mail today.
Here's the first one that took longar than expected due to cold, but turned out OK and I know my guy will dig it.
I made a 1" and a 3/4" copper bopper with a braided elm bark inlay in the handles. An extra lead filled copper cap for each size and hardwood mandrels for making more caps. An Ishi stick and a pressure flaking pad. Threw in an abrading stone and some extra copper rod pices.
Here's the pics

Then here's the other little item I came up with while waiting on glue to dry.
It's a bow drill friction fire kit.
Hickory bow with nylon string. Spalted wood bearing block, 5 yuka spindles and one spindle made of wood like the fire board which I don't know what kind it is, a tinder bundle and some char cloth.
I threw in a nice raw yuka stalk too.
I hope my guy can enjoy these items along with his family as that was my plan.

Thanks guys. I just went out to the shop and found the fire board that was supposed to sent along with the fire kit. SHOOT! I can't believe it was laying right there on the table and I probably had to move it over out of the way when I was taping the box.
I actually forgot to include a note with the package too so I guess I'll be headed back to the post office today.

well here it is, it should be shipped this weekend. This one is a maple backed hickory longbow with a bloodwood core; not the best combo, but it works and surprisingly has very little set. It is 71 NtN, and around #50 @ 28 and has a pretty crowned backing. now just pray that the recipient enjoys it; I always get nervous sending this stuff out.

I put a priority flat rate cardboard envelope in the mail yesterday with the missing fireboard and a personal letter to my guy, and threw in a knapped stone point just to take up space in the envelope.
Tracking shows the first two packages are out for delivery today so hopefully they will make their destination OK.   Terry

This is the bow that I made for the Christmas Trade. It is 60" nock to nock, and 50# @ 28". The tips were flipped and the belly was heat treated over a bed of coals. It has a big kink in the top limb that didn't want to budge so I left it. The bow bends slightly through the handle but I built up the handle with some cork for comfort. The tips are made from sheep horn and the natural texture of the horn was left on part of the overlays. The handwrap is leather with leather lace. The stain is leather dye and the artwork is done with acrylic paint. The string is fastflight. I really enjoyed making this bow from start to finish. I'm particularly pleased with the artwork on it as I was able to play around with some new ideas and techniques. I am reluctant to stick it in the mail so I think I will make another bow similar to this one for myself at some point. I hope my recipient enjoys shooting it as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for looking.
