well here it is it's taken just over a week to make but it's finnaly a bow. here are some specs. it is 62" long TTT has a 4" handle with 2" fades. it weighs in at 57#@26" it's overlays are hickory and purple heart. i was going to do a squirrel fur handle wrap but decided not to. in the end i used the parafin wax methord to finnish it up. here are some pics.

Good work young master Walsh! Good work indeed! I'm glad that you went with the parrafin finish. It looks good. I like the arrows as well. Did you make them? Josh
-
Good work man, way to stick with it! You finally made something that is worthy of being called a bow!
Jon

Tiller is on, I say go for it on the squirrel grip...

Cool! The nicely done wraps on the fletching was what I was admiring. Josh

done with black cotton thread. watched a few videos on youtube, i might use acctual feathers next time. if you wan't ill do a close up of one of the arrows.
-
Those aren't feathers!? :o. You had me fooled! Not that that is a particularly hard feat to accomplish. By all means a close up would be appreciated. Josh
-
nope there plastic alternitives, kinda like training wheels for when you do it for real. here are the close ups and also a look at the bodkin points.

Nice job jezz!just be a little careful with your overlays, looks like you filed through the hickory in to the back side of the oak and may be weaken it?overall your making leaps and bound over some earier efforts!you must be a strong little feller to pull a 57# bow with such ease!just saying !lol!
-
Well roll me in poop and call me stinky! :o. Even the close up pic looks like real feathers except for the shine maybe. I never heard of such a thing as plastic feathers. I wonder how they hold up over time? Anyway nice work! Josh

Yeah. This bow was 61# before I adjusted the tiller so now this feels fairly easy to pull back. 8)

Well, Mr.Stinky :P. I shot thees arrows through my target with this bow and after about 50 shots with each arrow only the cotton wrapping on one came loose but the "feather" stayed put. Fixed it in about 5 mins.

;D

Great work kiddo ;D
-
congrats BS, now the next thing you might want to improve is your finish work, not being negative, just a constructive suggestion ;D

If those aren't feathers i'm a Dutchman (i'm not!)
-
Cool bow well done :)
Yup definitely feathers those bud. I made the same mistake when first making arrows. I asked the guy in the shop if I could have some real ones next time and he said "what do you think they are? Scotch mist?"
They feel very plasticky but are goose feathers usually. I think it would be pretty tough and not worth the effort to manufacture artificial feathers and still have the same properties. Brilliant things aren't they.

If those aren't true feathers I'm an Englishman! (I'm not!) :D
Be careful with those nocks. You filed the string groove trhough the BACK of the bow, which is a no no. Since the tips are pretty bulky anyway, you left enough wood around the groove, but next time only file grooves in the sides of the bow and not the back.

Are they goose? Can't usually find goose feathers from archery suppliers, they're normally turkey as far as I know. Goose feathers are highly sought after by EWBS bowyers/fletchers as the Welsh class only allow goose feathers to be used. They're impossible to find and you normally have to go to private goose farmers or overseas sellers. I may be wrong though!
Jez, the bow looks good, but you need to work out what you're doing on those tips. The whole point of the tip overlay is to protect the back of the bow, but your overlay isn't doing anything except adding weight to the tip of the bow. You've still cut through the back for your string nock. Congrats on getting your first solid bow finished though!!
-
What DarkSoul said on the string nocks, other than that looks like you done a mighty fine job. :)

Good work on your bow. Looks really good to me.
-
Josh, I think you can get those plastic feathers from rubber ducks!
Good work young man, I'm ready to see the next one!
-
Thanks for the kind words about the bow. I know I went through the back of the bow but that part is very static so its ok. The guy who gave me the wood asked if I would make him one. I agreed and if I do a good job he will give me a job! (Sadly not making bows) but its a solid wood flooring company so it means I have great access to decent bow wood ;D
-
No, its not okay to cut through the back on your bow because its very static. Don't do that again without adding overlays first. Its a sure fire way to blacken an eye, or lose it totally.

I spit out my soda......those are dyed turkey feathers IMHO good job on the bow lad ...but like has been said it is bad to cut through the back...can't wait to see the next one
-
*SPOILER ALERT* This next bow im working on has yew overlays
-
???
-
Seeing as you seem to be learning - yew is poor overlay material as it's very soft. Pick hard (er) woods, ideally with interlocking grain.
If you aren't sure what to use in future try asking what other people use for overlays.
-
Good work, keep it up.
-
The nocks would worry me a little but there is still enough meat on them to file the back flat and add a thicker overlay of horn.
-
OH SNAP!! he pulling out the yew!!! lol :P

Good point. I only put them there as decoration. As the oak was looking a little bland. I haven't filled through them. Do the back of the bow is protected I suppose. OH SNAP!! he pulling out the yew!!! lol :P
Haha. No only an off cut for overlays. Im not making a yew bow. Yet. :P
