Title: Keeping warm by fire
Post by: sleek on October 11, 2013, 12:43:54 am
Just a random bit of useful knowledge here. When you plan on open air camping, and wanna keep warm, sleeping by a fire can be a smokey experience. I read this somewhere and tried it several times. Start a fire where you intend to sleep and it will warm the ground well. Longer it burns warmer the ground gets. Move the fire elsewhere when ready, and be sure to stomp out the embers. The ground stays warm a long time for a good sleep. Yall may already know this, but for those who dont, there ya go....

Sleek depending on when you were born, Jeremiah Johnson was the man. You may just be too young to know the movie. Like Russ said, you gotta' watch it once.

Is this the movie where he meets a weird old fellow who was bald because he didnt wanna get scalped? Same movie where in the end the vilian and the main guy both die? If so I have a vague memory of watching it as a kid..... I remember the ending to be very depressing...

Another way to use this trick is to dig a shallow trench, light your fire in it and once you're ready move your fire then refill the trench on top of the embers and coals that remain, then add another thin layer of fresh dirt or even green tree bows with leaves (I prefer aspen limbs with plenty of leaves left) then make your bed on top of the hot spot you've created. It also helps (If you have the time to do so or you intend on staying in one site for a while) to build a short wall of either wet logs or stones around the back side of your fire in a horseshoe. This horseshoe shaped wall will reflect the heat of the fire back toward your bed. The method of using a heat reflector like this is my favorite method.

I've always found a big rock and put it next to the fire. When it's time to go to bed move it and cuddle with it. That rock will be hot in the morning still

I have a catahoula bulldog, short hair no natural undercoat. He's 2 so he's developed one living in NY but still not much. And did I mention he's dumb. Like real dumb. Great with the kids and they love him or my fiancé would have prolly got rid of him

Something about cool shade in the summer and heat in the winter perhaps?

I've slept numerous times in my teepee next to a fire.On frozen ground too.I sleep on willow rod mats I make to get just a half inch or three quarter inch off of the ground.Makes all the diff in the world.
I must of watched that Jeremiah movie hundreds of times. It's a classic.

While you're looking for Jerimiah Johnson, you might as well get the Mountain Men with Brian Kieth and that other old, crusty, dude.
