Somehow my main debit card account information got hacked and I got cleaned out. I live pretty close to the bone and one big account pays 75% of my yearly income in one check. Fortunately, I had paid off a lot of my bills and they didn't get it all. My bank is on it and tells me I have a good chance of recovering most of it thru disputing the charges.
I had been telling myself to put most of the balance in savings and dole out an allowance to the debit card. Guess I should have listened to myself, huh?
In the meanwhile, I hope he falls facefirst and buck nekkid into some gnarly knappers debitage pit at highway speed.
-
Dang that sucks. Sorry to hear that and good luck on getting the money back. I think the knapper's pit should be on fire as well >:D
-
Oh no..I am so sorry to hear that. Good luck with getting it back.
-
Man JW feel for ya! That's awful Know just how Ya feel been down that road myself. Bank was real good about working with me.
-
I have had nothing but good service from this bank. From my experience today, I am not changing my mind or my bank.
Ain't it nice to get good service?
-
There are some real lowlifes out there! Sorry to hear you got taken. Ron

I'm worrying about that daily over here in Spain. I'm living off of my Debit card and Visa card. I'm sweating bullets everytime the waiter walks off with my Visa when he can't get it to go through.
-
Man that sucks! Sorry Bro.... Brian
-
Sorry about that,I try not to hate but I hate a thief. >:D Hope they catch up to him/her. >:D >:D

Sorry to hear that jw....that really sucks...
Identity theft is so easy a child with simpe computer skills can do it....I saw a documentary on a guy who made a living this way...his voice was distorted and face covered to keep him anonymous....all he needed was your numbers off the card...didn't need the security pin number either...he was able to take your numbers and put your account onto a different card...and once that was done he would go into a store and make a high dollar purchase...then would immediately put that purchase up for sale on eBay or Craig list for lower than what it actually cost so people will quickly bite on it and think there getting a steal of a deal(which they are literally)...and once he gets his money from that the card gets disposed and he hops on a plane back to his home town....he will do this all out of town so any local authorities have a hard time pinning him down cus he's not local wherever that transaction took place....it was sickening to see...
KEEP YOUR NUMBERS SAFE FOLKS!!!!

I think some fire ants need to be under that debtage pile as well and maybe some Africanized honey bees.

That sucks JW.. Hate a theif.. Happened to a freind of mine a while back.. They had a second scanner did the double swipe.. Bank and cops did actually catch these clowns.. Hope everything works out for you...
Thanks Leroy

They ran the purchases thru My Monedero, which is the Portugese version of PayPal. Just adds yet another layer of complexity for tracking an already fairly anonymous transaction.
-
Sucks, JW. We have a "everyday use" account for debit/charges that we keep a minimum in. The rest is kept separately. Takes work to manage but seems to be worth it...so far.
-
What's funny? I worked for four years in credit card fraud investigation. I kinda knew that, Parnell and yet managed to ignore it!

You could also try my method of credit and bank account protection: Keep the Credit Cards hovering near max, and have no money in the bank. Then if thieves steal your identity, they end up worse off, lol.
Again, all the best is getting whats yours back. Let us know if you need to form up a quick lynching mob or anything.
-
Good luck JW. That happened to my brother one time he ordered tools from a place in CA the person taking the order kept his numbers then ordered groceries to be delivered to there home.
-
Bugger all! That sucks. I love reading about they ways these guys can take your cards, but hate hearing about someone on the receiving end. It is really amazing the ways that crooks innovate. Skimmers on ATMs, scanning your card on a reader when they are going to scan it through a legit reader. I don't let my card out of my site these days - always bring cash to restaurants and always always check ATMs for skimmers.
Anyway, good to hear the bank is being helpful. Best of luck.
-
been there, done that as well j dub, got all mine back hope you do as well
-
Thieves should be shot with arrows. >:D
-
JW
that sucks !
I hope they catch the thief .
-
JW that's horrible!! We've had that happen twice, but it was for small amounts and the bank credited our account.

-
Man I hope you get everything back. It has happened to us in the past and it worked out ok.
-
Ok, so I finally got that straightened out, right? Yeah, great. This morning I get an automated call on my cell phone telling me there are suspicious charges on my card and it asks me to call an 800 number before hanging up. Now I am officially paranoid, since I just got the replacement card the other day. Is this the scammer trying to get the new card number? Is the new card hit already? What the ...?
Ok, I call and I do NOT give out a lick of information at all. In fact, I ask the person on the line to provide me with the date and the amount of the last deposit. That is something only the card company can come up with. She nails it. Except it is ANOTHER account at that bank, my business account that I hold jointly with a friend.
Fortunately, this bank was on the alert with my accounts. They saw a $2 charge in Nebraska, another for $4 in Mexico, and one for $0.66 in China. They shut it all down and put my card on hold until I called.
I would love to get my mitts on the person that stole my information. He'd go feet first into a chipper/shredder with an underpowered motor so that it would keep clogging and we'd have to back him out and start over again and again.
-
I like that response JW!
-
Just desserts will come to those who earn them!
The only shame in that is when they pay for thier thievery, you'll probably never have the satisfaction of knowing about it.
When forced to deal with scumbags, karma can be an invisible friend.
Sorry to hear about your problems JW, hope it all works out as best as possible.

Dang it Sir,
Sorry you are having to go through all this.
The last time I went through this, I had to change All my Accounts.
Open new accounts, transfer everything over, reset any auto deposits/withdrawals.
A Real nightmare.
This is also the main reason I do not link my Checking and Savings accounts with Overdraft Protection or some such.

MMmmmmm I wonder how the culprits got your info..? That is a pain in the royal you know what......!!!! >:D >:D >:D I saw a deal on the news latley about theives getting into cars with a dummy remote, thats WHy I never, WHy I never, I never, never Leave stuff in the Vehicle...not even in the trunk.
Same in the old days days when I use to visit Cabarets, I always kept my car keys in my pocket........ :) If the women put their hands in my pockets is was always the back one..... ;)

JW, Chit chur has changed hasn't it? Remember the days when you used to go to the barber shop or the drug store and they had a counter check for every bank in the county and you just told them which one you wanted to write one on? Damned internet seems to have changed everything. I've often thought about given this damned thing the boot but even at my old age I'd be like a lost puppy.
Hope you recoup and they catch the bastards.

I had a scare not so long ago. I went to use my card, and it didn't work. I knew I had money there, but couldn't get it to work. Tried to get on my online banking when I got home, but I couldn't get into that either. I went in to the bank to get it all sorted, and it turns out that I had used my card at a location where skimmers or other devices had been used to steal information, so the bank locked down my account for my own protection. It was a bit of a pain in the ass, but it may have saved my cash.
I wish you a speedy resolution to your issues.
-
They had racked up less than $15 in charges before my bank shut them down.
However, I decided to open another checking account at this bank and not link it to ANY of my other accounts. It will hold only $25 in order to keep the account open and I will make a cash deposit to the account for the exact amount only of whatever I am going to purchase online. The only thing I can imagine happened is that the computer at work is compromised and that is how they got my two accounts. It's the only computer where I have used both cards to make purchases online.
-
Well now....isn't that just lovely! If you get a location on these lowlifes, I'll go pick em up for you and deliver em right to your door JW! I wonder if they would repent their evil ways if they were trussed up with chunks of meat stuck all over em and locked in a room full of hungry raptors ?!?! That'd learn em a thing or two! Josh

I'll get 'em with the little 5 oz. male screech owl we call Wolfie. He nailed my thumb today with his tiny little talons and all four went straight to the bone! Maybe not their thumb, but you get the idea.
-
Maybe not their thumb huh? ;D
-
Oooouch! Makes me want to repent just thinking about it and I ain't even the guilty party! Well...not guilty in this case anyway. >:D. Josh
-
Sorry to hear it JW.

Scary that some dirt bags can do this type of thing to a person. You can work hard and be smart about your finances
yet still get burned. Hope it all gets worked out in your favor somehow John, I feel for ya brother, it's simply just not right.
-
I have everything back, all card numbers have been changed, no debit card account has anything more than a nominal amount of money in it, and I now have online banking set up so that I can transfer money from savings into the checking account quickly in case I need to run a charge larger than a grocery run.
My bank explained that their policy of not automatically transferring from savings to checking to cover overdrafts will protect the savings accounts from getting the Dracula treatment, too. Good.
I now suspect that purchases I made from the computer here at work are where the whole crap-toast event started. It obviously has spyware and malware choking it, but the store owner is tighter than bull's butt in fly season and won't replace it as long as it will turn on.
-
Glad you came out OK !!
-
Les Guillotine!! >:( Les Guillotine! >:(
Glad you got it back. Just the reason, I don't do any banking on my computer. I have excellent protection from such, but so does the CIA, and they have been hacked multiple times.
I have Trend Micro, as my main protection, but have another one also. But I had Norton "once", and it said it had detected a problem and taken care of it. Yep, it took care of it. it took to where ever in my computer it wanted to go. Took almost an hour on the phone with Microsoft, to get it cleared out. Probably some little 14 yr. having fun. Good thing I didn't have a clue who the little #@@% was, it would take quite few years before his little fingers would be able to operate a key board! Glad you were able to recover your losses.

Glad it worked out for you in the end. This happened to my wife a couple years ago, she went to check her account and somebody was burning it up in Miami, Florida, and St. Louis Missouri at the same time. She got her money back, but it took several days of aggravation and being broke before she got it back.
-
glad it worked out for ya..and yet one more reason i dont use credit cards.
