Title: Halloween Bow. "frankenstein" (more pics added)
Post by: BowSlayer on October 31, 2013, 09:07:00 pm
Hi all i decided to take your advice with this bow and take it slow i didn't rush and it paid off. each year the archery club has a halloween party so i decided to make a bow especialy for the occasion. i started this bow off a few weeks ago. And i did go for a very mild "Z" shaped handle but when i arrived and started shooting i relised the room was quiet. the recurve and compound archers started looking at me.

after some snacks and drinks i decided to let them have a go. and i think i may have even convinced one of the compound shooters to start shooting long/flat bows now looking at the pics the oil i finnished it with gives it a yellow tint making it look a tiny bit like osage! but it's another oak bow.

i decided to do some art work to the bow so i made a ghost  and bat stencil and started spraying. then i got a black marker and drew stitches on the belly. i realised i covered the bit where you put name and DW with stitches so i put it on the tip of the bow. i also added a leather handle and i wanted to make the stitches look "rough" so i cut a strip from the leather and used that.

this might also be my last bow unless i find the perfect yew stave or maybe even the 2014 bow trade but appart from that im going to take a break from this bow making.  i will probabaly still make posts. anyway putting that aside lets focus on the bow in question, how about some stats?

65" TTT
37#@28"

Z-shaped handle.

and now the pics

Pretty nice tiller there young man!  I have some concerns about the grain of your board though.  Its hard to get a good read on it with this little phone screen, so maybe its not as bad as it looks.  Big improvement nonetheless!  Well done!  Josh

Absolutely no offence to you two, but he did say in his post in the "Around the Campfire" section that he would quit after he had finished his last bow, I know its been a while but he did take his time. I only bring this up because I do remember that precise meaning and intention being mentioned in his previous post and since he's gotten so much crap in the past of which most of it he deserved, but now he did follow through on what he said he would do...don't make judgment calls unless you are absolutely sure you know what they said. Here he has claimed that he would make one more and probably quit, he's followed up with the first part, if he chooses to leave then that's his decisions.

Anyway, nice bow! Be careful though saying that you will just join the trade. Remember that this is not quite hunting weight and its the first one that is of quality so far, this means that you would still need to practice making bows. I got turned down after making a decent bow or two. If you want to take part in trades you want to be giving someone a quality bow, that means you should still practice, even if someone has done something 100 times nicely doesn't mean that its really good. If you remind yourself that you are lacking in skill and that you can do better then you will be humble and not get hurt by people on this site turning you down for a trade.

Spot-on tiller. The grain looks a little chancy - like you may get some twist in the limb, but if it works (and obviously it does) then congrats! It looks great!

When I got the board the grain worried me to and I did consider backing it. But decided not to in the end.  I figured if it was well tillered and I made it a low draw weight it should be ok. It seemed to work.  I might upload some pics from the event later on if anyone wants to see them.

Very nice! Good tiller, fun design.  Just shows what taking a bit of time and having patience really does eh?

Spelled Frankenstein wrong on the bow though ;)

Cheers Will. Yeah I know im really upset about that but oh well.

Its funny as the compound archer asked if I would make him a bow now originally I declined but after he gave me a call and we got talking he said he would pay for it and the materials.  I also explained how they are different to compounds. In the end we decided on a "Robin Hood" style bow. So I guess this isn't my last bow.  :P

By Robin Hood I assume you mean a Mongolian/Hunnish style short reflex/deflex that he would have picked up during the Crusades, not a whacking great longbow which would be totally useless in woodland and forested areas right?

Can of worms opened...

Ahem.

no i was thinking of a longbow. as ive only seen him with a R/D bow in the T.V show but in the movies he has a Longbow.

Common sense would suggest a longbow is ridiculous if you think about it.  But if the movies say it's a longbow then...

I know a guy that had a dream once that Robin used a quad-cammed compound crossbow with reverse mounted limbs, ...does that count?

OneBow

BTW - Squirely, nice bow!  Your tiller looks good.  Nice job staying in the low weight ranges to keep the run-out grain from mattering quite as much.  Here's hoping she holds up for you!

In the BBC Robin Hood TV series Robin carries a "Saracen Bow" according to the show.  The character picked it up in the middle east during his time in the Crusades.

Thx for the pm Mr Bowslayer :)  &having read thro some of your posts, i feel the need to reply publicly.,,

No. i am not a bowyer.  ~i just got lucky first time around. it sometimes happens like that lol. on the other hand, you my friend are a bowyer. here's why i think so:

you show a keen interest. &on this forum, don't just lurk but are brave enough to participate, ask questions & let folk know what you're up to.

in the process of making your sticks, you have taken some stick. yet you have clearly been able to identify the good advice and at the same time have not been dis-heartened by the odd naysayer. good for you ;)

&you have dared to take-on difficult things despite being warned not to. this is of course foolishness, but afaik, the only way to becoming adept is like this, since the fool knows no bounds!  rotfl

although i am far from qualified, frankenstein seems a well tillered & v.fine & lovely bow! -i also like the z~grip ;)

my only suggestion would be, now that you have a good feel for the tillering business, to concentrate on choosing the right piece of wood. whatever the endeavour, i tend to think most of the real work is done before the physical work begins, if that makes any sense.

thanks violet. iv'e acctually left this bow at the club for everyone and anyone to use, scince it was made for the event. also if i do get tired of shooting my  FG recurve (which im thinking of returning) i can always just pull this bow down off the shelf/ wall thingy we have and then use it.

ok this bit is't really about bows but there some more pics from the event including a group photo. just thought i'd share these too as i wasn't sure to post them before. ::)

(http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t614/bowslayerjez/Pic2_zps677dff35.png) (http://s1316.photobucket.com/user/bowslayerjez/media/Pic2_zps677dff35.png.html)
this is the target wall

(http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t614/bowslayerjez/Pic5_zpsa8445a34.png) (http://s1316.photobucket.com/user/bowslayerjez/media/Pic5_zpsa8445a34.png.html)
the bow had a "frankenstein" string made from two bits of cordage tied together. this kept braking with each shot and messed up my shooting so the string you see in the other pictures is from my recurve.

(http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t614/bowslayerjez/Pic3_zpse7bb7d97.png) (http://s1316.photobucket.com/user/bowslayerjez/media/Pic3_zpse7bb7d97.png.html)

also im not sure if i posted this its a ghost i put on the back of the bow just above the handle on the top limb.
