Eric, the war was winding down somewhat when I volunteered for Vietnam and was giving the option of going to Germany or Korea the day of deployment. Man, I wished I'd known that OPTIONS were a good thing back then ;)..........Art

USAF 2010-Present; Knowledge Operations

The strange thing Art was I was a helicopter crew chief when they sent me to Germany. I worked in field maintenance in Germany only crewed a Huey for one flight to Frankfort during the 18 months I was there I. When I left processing at Ft Knox, with my 201 file in hand, I looked down at the in box and saw my orders for Nam sitting there. The orders didn't follow me to Germany.

-
No wonder I like you guys! I knew there had to be something. Good work to all of you.
-
Eric, good thing you didn't go to Vietnam. It was my job (firefighter) to rescue you guys in the Hueys and let the things burn when they came in and crashed. :'(
I just want to say, I'm so proud of our men and women serving today and especially the recognition they receive and justly deserve. But my heart still sinks when I think back to how I, and my brothers were treated. But we move on...........Art
-
I respect and admire you Nam guys like no other Artsy, no crap. I'm only 40 years old, but I've been captivated by that war and WWII for as long as I can remember. I've watched countless hours of TV programs, DVD's and VHS tapes. I feel like the more I learn about them the more I can try to understand what you guys did both there and HERE when you came back. I never had the balls to enlist and it eats at me all the time, so I try to make up for it through the American Legion and outfits such as. Dad did 23 yrs in the Army, Grandpa did WWII and got shot twice. I also had two uncles in Nam. Trust me buddy, I respect you and your brothers as much as possible. You get one life and to give it up for people you don't know, well, there is nothing more admirable in this world through these eyes.

Man, I must be getting old. My Dad was in WWI and was shell shocked and gassed. Uncles and all my brothers served except one. A family tradition clear back to the Revolutionary War. Here in the mountains, it's not so much about serving, but where your next meal is coming from ;D!
-
Thanks to folks like you, I got the option of taking German Language as an elective in high school instead of a requisite! Thank you.

Amen to what JW said. This poem is about WWI by a WWI soldier that was killed in that war. The soldier that is gased in the poem is gased by "friendly fire."
DULCE ET DECORUM EST(1)
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares(2) we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest(3) began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4)
Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind.
Gas!(7) Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets(8) just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime(9) . . .
Dim, through the misty panes(10) and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,(11) choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud(12)
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13)
To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.(15)

I had some of my family in WWI and WWII . My father joined for a short time and they sent him to Alaska for a short time didn't like it so he got out when he could ( dad didn't stay with one thing for too long , I don't have enough toes and fingers to count them on ) , I got out of school in 90 and started my first job , when they started sending our men over I thought about enlisting and probably should have . I have a nephew that is deployed now .
My great grandfather served in WWI , they had a hight restriction then and they said he was too short to carry a weapon so he was a photografer for the army , wish I could find some of his pics.
My grandfather on my mom's side served in WWII , he landed on the beaches and spent a few weeks in knee deep water and got trench foot , he was the only one in his unit that made the landing , he never talked about it much but he did say a time or two that when he looked out across the field he could see the enemy in their trenches.
I know it's not the same , but I have helped my community out by being a volantear fire fighter for seventeen years .
A big thanks here for all those that served and the ones serving now .

Hey Gun Doc, our base camp surrounded the seabee base camp at Phubai. I remember going up there to see a movie one night when we were on a stand down. Got mortared and had to go back down to our perimeter, never did see the end of the movie, and can't remember what it was. I hate unfinished business ;)!

Awesome pic Ed! Tell your father Thank You from me.

Pretty sure my grandfather was in WW1, My father was in various branches of the military from 1938 until 1945, he ended up in Army Intelligence in the states during part of the war, must have done bad things to bad people during this time because he still has PTSD at age 95, he won't talk about it.
I joined the Army in 67, my son was headed jail as a juvenile delinquent if he stayed on the same path he was traveling. I strongly encouraged him to enter the military after high school, I wouldn't take NO for an answer. He spent 4 years in the Air Force, grew up, straighten up, graduated 2nd in his class at Auburn as a Computer software engineer after he got out. He has since gone on to be very successful after starting his own internet company.
The military has been a family tradition for Krewson men that has now come to an end, all the granddaughters are girls and definitely won't be joining the military any time soon.

Well I'll be! Its a small world. My favorite pic of Dad is one taken of him on a halftrack mounted quad fifty that was set up to guard the river. One pair of guns was named "Tom &Jerry", but I can't remember what the other two were named. I'll have to dig that pic up and see. Thank you to everyone that served! Josh
