This is my version based on a bow I've been wanting to attempt for a while. The stave is buckthorn that was given to me by Cody the 'misslemaster', thanks Cody. I need to put a few more coats of finish on it but other than that I think I'm done. Got a dogleg top limb and the whole bow is a bit of a leaner to one side. Had quite a few heat correction attempts and between those and the side nocks I've gotten it straightened out as well as I'm able.
Seems to correct as drawn and shoots alright so I'm calling it done. Mass weight is real light and I'll weigh it again when I get back over to the shop but I think it was about 8 or 9oz. prior to putting finish on. Colors are ground earth pigments mixed in acrylic medium and finish is a couple coats of tru oil with a half dozen more coats to follow.
Comments welcome and thanks for looking. :)
Specs: 50.75" ntn - 52.5" tip to tip
47.5 # @ 24"
Widths; 1 5/16" handle, 1 3/16" midlimb, 9/16" & 5/8 at tips

Very nice! No matter how many handle bows I build for some reason I keep going back to build bend in the handle bows. I think I just like the simplicity.
-
nice. i gotta get around to building something truly primitive like that... been wanting to try a bendy handle anyway.
-
B2, that's a real nice bend right there....right up the old man's alley, very well done
-
Thanks Eddie, yeah I'm drawn to the bendy handle bows too for the pure simple form of 'em.
Thanks echatam, be sure to post that bendy bow when you get it done.
Thanks Rich, I kinda thought old halfeye might just like this one. ;D
-
Bend in the handle and side-nocks! I like it. I wish I saw more posts like this on here.
-
Sweet Greg....love it :D
-

Now that's PA right there buddy... 8) Nicely bent, Badly Bent...
-
Very nice! Great tiller. It's definitely primitive. Looks like a lot of fun to shoot.
-
Wow! Love that upper nock. That is some fine workmanship. Thanks for sharing that Greg.
-
Thanks Tim, the longer I do this the more I lean towards more primitive styles in my bows.
Thanks Hawkster
Thanks Pearlie, when they don't shoot real good I try and make 'em look good.
Thanks D-bar, what I said to pearl
Thanks Donald, glad you like it.
Thanks Josh, I be shooting it some more when it warms a bit outside.
Thanks Carson, yeah the upper nock is kinda unique and what first drew my attention to this one in the book.
-
That's awesome. You got some good weight out of that piece. That bow would go nicely with my new "knife" ::)
-
AWESOME!
-
Yes it will steve, I'd gladly carry your new knife with the bow, just send it on over. ;D
-
sweet Greg, ain't anything simple about your bows, the only thing better than looking at one would be shootin' one, bub
-
Man that's one sweet bow. I just love the way your bows look. I have said it before and I'll say it again. In every way great looking bow.
Matt
-
Another Homerun Greg - really liken' those side nocks ! Bob
-
Top shelf finish on that cool bow!
Sweet!
-
very very nice
elegant in its simplicity. great bow
love side nocks
-
That's an outstanding bow Greg.
-
You know I dig that Greg. Nice work.
-
Very sweet lookin' bow Greg. I can remember you saying a while back that you were going to build a short bow. Looks like you nailed it.
-
Thanks steve
Thanks Arrowwind
Thank you bub, Matt, Bob, dbb, Glis and Clint. I appreciate the feedback guys.
Would like to go out in the backyard and shoot it today but man it is cold here and I'll probably wimp out and stay in and watch football instead. Can't hunt this weekend because its gun season here and no bowhunting allowed during the 3 day gun season.
-
Thanks Jon. Figured you'd appreciate this little bow. Working my way down to finishing off that 47" osage that I've been dragging my feet on, slowly losing my fear of the short bows. ;D
Thanks Slim, yeah been doing some shorter ones lately here partly because of the buckthorns character flaws, often
hard to find 50" to 60' of good wood in a stave.
-
Good job!
-
great work man, love the whole thing..about as perfect for hunting as you ca get.
-
very nice profile, I think I'd like to try doing a replica some day
chuck
-
wow,wicked nice!!! :)
-
Awesome bend and I love the finish, especially how the black fades to the light brown, looks really cool!
-
Outstanding!
It should be a great hunting bow!
-
I love this bow. It really looks like the real deal, good job :)
-
Very nice. I made the very same bow some 15 years ago, even down to the same wood as the museum piece
-
Sweet looking bow. I hope to make something like that in the future.
-
Outstanding.
Really enjoy seeing this type bow posted.
Congrats.

Thanks TMK
Thank you Eric
Thanks Chuck
Thanks bushboy
Thank you zionator
Thanks Rhansen
Thanks Cesar
Thanks Marc, would love to see pics of the birch one you made. I think I remember seeing a birch Powhatten bow of your making that really impressed me but not the one of this design.
Thank you Ryan
Thanks Traxx
-
Got to love that, beautiful work. :)
Pappy
-
Awesome work as usual Greg! That one looks like a sweet shooter to me.
-
Beauty job on that one !
-
Great bow there! Thanks for the post.
-
Very handsome. I like making "replica" bows the most, myself. This one looks great! I got a couple pieces of the buckthorn from Cody, myself. Starting to think it's time is coming up...
-
It's kinda ironic that you made such a native styled bow out of an invader species of wood! Looks awesome...
OneBow
-
Nice work Mr. Greg...love the finish work! Like what ya did with the antlers in the pics too!
Hope you and the family are well... -Drew
-
Thank you Pappy, Howard, lostarrow & Dubois, appreciate the compliments on the bow fellows.
Thanks Parnell, I look forward to seeing your buckthorn bows. I've had my frustrations with this wood but can't seem to put it down none the less, gonna keep making 'em till I run out and then I likely cut more of it.
Thanks OneBow, I would have used birch if I'd had any but your right kinda ironic yes. :)
Thanks Drew, we gonna see ya at elm hall again next summer?
-
Man Greg,
I think I'm in love. With the bow man with the bow. >:D >:D I would give my right foot for that thing, it is that nice. Are you planning on tying some horse hair or feathers to the nub at the top of the bow? Awesome, Awesome, Awesome, just a dream bow for me. Man I am jealous. >:D >:D
Jon
-
Can't wait to shoot that one! Anyone who never has seen Greg's work, I can't even explain how awesome the finish work is. When you hold it it seems right out of a museum. Very primitive look and feel. Some day I'll own me one >:D
-
I love it!!!!!
-
Man...I do love seeing your bows Greg! They always get my blood pumpin and this one is no exception. Awesome! Josh
-
Jon, now what would I do with another right foot? Thanks for the offer though, glad you like the bow man. :)
Paul thanks for the compliment brother, you'll have one but it'll have to be a better shooter than this one. Thanks Wildman, appreciate it.
Thanks Josh, we all get inspirations from others on here and I'm no exception.
-
Beautiful bow, nice bend, nice finish!
-
love a bendy handle well done !
-
I am a little slow on this one never the less
It is badly bent
Just the way we like them !
Guy
-
sure looks great and the tiller is awesome for a difficult stick... yep, looks like the real thing!
-
I must have missed that one. Looks like some stick at first glance, but the when braced it shows to be very well bent ;)
And I really like your paint jobs a lot.
