just finished this 65# persimmon...
65 3/4" tip to tip , 1 3/4" widest, 1" width before the nocks,
back was dry heat reflexed and the tips steam bent reflexed. a certain amount of set
really enjoy working with persimmon and leaving the sap wood with all its knots and its lighter color. these tips naturally turned black from clamping the ends on the roughed out stave to prevent propellering . didn't weaken the wood in any way, maybe something to do with the sap under the wood clamps?
powerful shooter... i just need to work out with it to build some muscle strength!
harder to do as a 58 year old than you young whipper-snappers.

Sweet bow man! I remember my grandpa pointing out persimmon on his farm when I was a kid. Kinda hope to give it a shot someday.
-
Simple and elegant!
Nice finish too,sweet!
-
Beautiful job on that bow. I just did my first persimmon a couple of months ago, fantastic wood. Hardest wood I ever worked bar none, I had to sharpen my scraper after each set of scrapes.
-
I love that profile Richard. Nice job! Was wondering if that is the natural color of the wood or if you stained it? Great looking bow.
-
Nothing wrong with that. Nice looking bow. With that heavy draw that thing is probably an animal.
-
thanks!
StickMan47, no staining, i just used True oil... it has almost a natural walnut like color below the sapwood.
maybe just a tad greyer than walnut.
-
Awesome bow, that is one nice bend! Looks like a shooter!
-
Sweeeet bend, love the way you took extra care to make those string friendly nocks...really nice 8)
-
thanks for the encouragements!
now i'll need to make some heftier spined-up arrows for this one.
-
That is a sweet looking bow, I bet it does shoot hard.
-
Now that's a great lookin bow Richard. I love the subtle curves
-
Very graceful. Looks like a pleasure to shoot!
-
That is a great profile and a beautiful bow! Ive yet to split a persimmon log that didnt have severe twist to it.
-
That is everything a bow should be. Doesn't look like there is an ounce of fat on it either.
-
very nicely done!
-
Fantastic bow Richard. Now I need to throw a "want ad" up for some persimmon.
-
Really nice work and bow! Like the design.

That is a beautiful bow. I will be looking for some of that wood for sure. Thanks for sharing.
-
nice straight up bow!
-
that sir, is a fine looking bow. I have a special place in my heart for persimmon and the shape of yours in gorgeous in my book. congrats- Ryan
-
Very nicely done! Your tiller is perfect.
-
My persimmon was whitishwith gray mottling. I have to wonder if some persimmon takes up more minerals into the wood than other trees, my one sample burned up the bandsaw blade almost as soon as it touched it and took the edge off every tool I used. I finaly settle for a scraper but had to keep a file on my lap and resharpen after 6 or 7 scrapes.
-
Nice unbraced and full draw profiles 8)
-
Sweet! Love the curves on it.
-
very graceful curves. fine job on a sweet looking bow
-
AWESOME BOW! The tiller looks spot on. I really like the curves too. Nice job!
-
Good candidate for bow of the month, love the braced and drawn profiles.
-
Beautiful looking bow!
-
Classy bow!
-
thanks so much for the encouraging words! makes me wanna get busy on the next one..
you know how it is, there's always a line of staves in process...
Badger,
persimmon here in on the property in NE Okl. is definitely a hard wood,
but wow...i've not had the same problem with it chewing up blades...other than normal scraper retouches.
-
Some bow just have "it" you just made one with "it". Really nice bow in every respect.
-
That is a real beauty :)
-
Very nice unit, looks like a very natural old school patina...
-
Great looking stick you got there!
I made a 45# persimmon bow over the summer
and it's my best bow to date. I still have a stash
and will definitely make more in the future.
Thanks for sharing!
Japbow.

Thats a great bow Mr. Zane, exceptional work and sweet tiller. Gotta be a hard shooter too from the looks of it. Real nice work on that one. Persimmon is one of those woods I would love to try myself one day.
-
Wow! What a great looking bow! Would love to see her shoot some arrows. How long did you season that persimmon?
-
Beautiful bow, very nice job on all of it. :)

That bow is incredible I love every thing about it..... Now I'm wondering if you guys are exaggerating the hardness of this wood considering Osage is harder then persimmon and I've never had this problem
-
thanks all!
to answer your question Wylden, I guess its seasoned about 2 years.
I had it bolt clamped to an old oak 2x6 for a year with another persm. stave . (that one turned out nice but its only about a 35#)
roughed it out after a year... then recently removed more wood on the limbs and tip , reflexed it, tillered it and finished it up just last week.
Joe,
Maybe some dryland persimmon gets ornry hard? but this was cut in a damper hollow, where the trees are reaching tall and straight.
I didn't think it was overly hard, and definitely not as hard as osage.
the light sap wood is very shallow - which gives it almost a laminated look.

Est! Est!! Est!!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Est!_Est!!_Est!!!_di_Montefiascone) (latin cit. )

65#@?
-
GlisGlis,
ah yeah, forgot to add that.... 65# at 28"
-
Oh my! That is a dandy of a bow! I'm diggin every aspect of it. Well done Sir! Josh
-
That has beautiful lines! Really nice bow Richard!
-
That bow is pure beauty.
-
Pretty wood. That's a good lookin' bow. Never had a chance to use persimmon but have always wanted to. Looks like its up there with hophornbeam, hackberry, and vine maple as far as white woods go.
-
Wow , don't know how I missed this one. Love the bend in that one.

Great looking bow. Just discovered a nice persimmon tree next to a powerline I hunt. If the tree crews come, i'm snatching it up.
-
I've been already marking (in my mind) some nice tall straight persimmons myself...for spring harvest
love the way the wood works, cutting, rasping, scraping..the wood is wonderful stuff
