Title: Muzzle loader swap (Pic added)
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on December 05, 2013, 03:53:47 pm
Just swapped my original Knight MK-85 with a brushed stainless barrel and green/grey lam'ed stock for a 30 yr old TC Hawken percussion gun in good shape. Im fired right up to resurrect this old gal and make her look the way I want her to. I plan to refinish the wood and get all the brass shined back up. My in-line has sat for a while and I cant see me using it soon. I still feel like Im way ahead of the game just having the ability to shoot 60-70 yards! Ive grown accustomed to bow hunting only over the years.

the inlines aren't as much fun to shoot as the traditional guns, have fun cleaning her up

My first muzzle loader was the TC Pennsylvania Hunter, wish I still had that ol' girl. I like the longer barrelled guns.

LOL when I first read "Muzzle Loader Swap" I was thinking it was like the Bow Trade, Xmas Trade, Knife in the Hat, arrow swap, etc.

I was thinking....Sheesh...these guys trade EVERYTHING!?! LOL.

I hear ya' Jeff. I have to listen to BS get passed on around here (at work) all the time about in-lines. Things like, "might as well use a rifle, those new in lines shoot 300 yards"........notta one of them have even owned an in line or shot 300 yards with one. Ive been in and out of smoke poles since I was 20. Ive shot all kinds of them with and without scopes, sabots, round balls and powerbelts, loose powder, pellets and whatever else they've come up with. They are still 150 yard guns max in my eyes, same as they where 40 years ago.

I have a TC Hawkin(50cal) percussion that my wife bought for me for our first Christmas together in 1978. I killed my first 2 deer with it the next fall and haven't shot it since.  ::)

I got a hankerin' Pat! I haven't shot a muzzle loader deer in 7-8 years. I think more than anything, its the wood refinishing that is grabbing me.

I done the exact same thing years ago Pearlie. A scoped muzzleloader just didn't feel right anymore after messing with these type bows. I refinished my walnut stock as well. Rounded all edges good and finished with bear grease. I try to let all the brass tarnish up, but my son has different thoughts on the subject and catches me with my back turned. Needless to say, when I hit the woods, I not only smell right, I stand out too!  ;D

The TC Hawken is a well built gun
With a little loven and some fine tuning she will make a powerful lot of meat !
Look good doing it too !
From time to time I wish for mine back she was a special girl with fancy walnut and white brass that looked like silver ,miss that girl !!!!!
But at the end of the day I just hope she is doing what she loves best and being used, not hanging on the wall , she is a beautiful wall decor, but I could stand to see her heart broken by sitting around being slobbered over , she needs to hunt !
I hope where ever she is she is happy , maybe one day we will meet up and talk over some good times !

I bought a MK-85 when they first came out wouldn't shoot worth a hoot, called the company and they said"yep those early ones had bad barrels on them, we changed barrel companies, we don't replace bad barrels".  Bought my wife a BK-92 about the same time, it had a green mountain barrel on it and was tack driver.

Sold my MK-85 years ago for about half what I paid for it, just traded my late wife's BK-92 for a TC New  Englander stock with a green mountain barrel on it. I gave the TC to a friend's daughter who expressed and interest in M/L hunting.

Over the years people have given me a bunch of guns when they found out their days on this earth were numbered, I plan to do the same if I get an advanced warning of my passing.

Oh-Oh Pearly. You're sliding down the slippery slope now! When you wrap your hands around a long, slim, fullstock, FLINTLOCK, American longrifle you'll probably trade that ole TC off in a hurry and go for a REAL muzzle loader.  ;D Next time you're over here I'll show you what they look like.   >:D You'll never go back. In-lines aren't for me. Pearl glad you went primitive.... It's amazing the similarities Pat! my wife gave me my first ...muzzleloader for my first Christmas gift, it was a TC 54 cal Hawkins kit.  I spent the next three nights working on the sucker.  I've have probably shot over 50 deer with that rifle.

But the last couple years it's been tough focusing on the deer, front and rear site at the same time. Pearl, hope you don't get there, its H3!! getting old.   But I got two Doe this year with it.

Good luck with the refurbish

DBar, is it just the sights on the TC or is it us?  ::)  ;D   I probably could see the rear sight but not the front and definitely not the deer.  ;D
If I remember correctly I also shot the 370 gr maxiballs with 90 gr od powder. My first deer, an 8pt buck, was shot at 90 paces, the second, a doe, was straight down(point blank?).  That was in 1979.  :o

I had a nice scope on my MK-85, Art owns that scope now. Mine was a tack driver. 250 grain Hornady bullets and 90 grains of loose American Pioneer. I went 3 for 3 with it. And my son is 2 for 2.

I love to burn black powder. I have an old St. Louis Hawken that's put an enormous pile of deer in the freezer over the years. Love shooting and hunting with my flintlock even better. You couldn't run me down and give me a scoped inline.

Ok, Pearlie, you are in for it now! It will only get worse.

If you are lucky, they used a stain/top finish that was all in one.  If they stained and then finished, you will probably have to sand deeply into the wood and your furniture won't fit.  You may have to file down the buttplate and such to match, but oh well!  You are a meticulous craftsman and you will do just fine.

Good trade.. I beleive there is a rule that you can't talk about a smoke pole without posting pics... >:D  JW had something to do with that... O:)

I may have been involved with that.

Fullstock flinters are the long, cool woman in the black dress of the muzzleloading world.
"With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all..."

If you don't like the looks of the refinished stock, go buy a big old block of maple and carve a replacement.  Easy peasy, you don't even have to worry about tiller!  ;D

There are a nunber of places that sell precarved stocks for TC guns in curly maple, some halfstock and some to convert a TC gun to full stock.

If you were to restock a TC gun it would have to be because you have an emotional attachment to the gun, after restocking you will have more money in the gun than it is worth.

Pictures, I got pictures. The first gun I built and one of it's victims, 54 cal, C weight Rice barrel, Deluxe Chambers/Siler lock, built from a plank, not a kit, took me two years of learning and goofing up and learning some more to finish it.

Nice looking long gun Eric,  I'll have to get out my first build that wasn't a kit and snap some pic's.  Built mine long before I knew what the internet was.
You do nice work
What did you finish the stock with, and did you use a flame to bring out the tiger strip a bit more?

That I fine looking rifle Eric! You're a true craftsman.

Here's a funny for you Pearlie. My brother and I were shooting one of my MZ's on day, mind you he doesn't own any rifles, but he loves to shoot, and he's a fine shot. So as long as you pay for the ball and powder, he'll shoot all day long and into the next week. Well, on this particular day I told him to clean the barrel between shots and gave him a bag of cleaning patches. I'd shoot and clean. Then he'd shoot and clean. I noticed when he wallowed his patch around in his mouth to wet it, he'd grimace and make a sour face. But I didn't say anything. After about a half dozen shoots he said that those patches tasted kinda funny. I said I reckon so, those were my bear greased patches, LMAO! Pay back can be a bitch sometimes, LOL!

I've got pictures too.  Here's a little buck I got a couple of weeks ago.  .50 cal. flinter which I built from a box of old rusty parts that I got from a bowyer that "never got around to putting it together".  It shoots center if I hold my mouth right.

After talking with my Hawken guru friend yesterday morning, I think this one is leaning towards 40 years old. The serial numbers are no good. TC burned and they lost everything. According to the type of barrel and type of rifling this gun has, its a keeper I guess. My buddy wanted to give me his new barrell and money for mine? Nah!

What is there to refinish? Give it a wipe down with gun oil and go shooting!  Besides, you DO NOT WANT SHINY BRASS!

Once it is shiny you gotta keep working to keep it shiny.  Leave it dull like this and you will scare fewer deer anyway!

Most of these production caplocks had the "snail" press fit and sort of riveted into place.  They cannot be screwed out.  That was to prevent the snails from rusting out thru the threads and blowing off.  Unfortunately, this means when they are hard to convert, and impossible to replace.

As light weight as that gun is, a maxi ball load in it will be a punisher for the loose nut on the trigger.  The lighter round ball load is one whole heck of a lot more effective than many people today give it credit.

I've never lost a single deer shot with a roundball.  I've had 13 of the 14 kills be single shot jobs.  I don't wish to speak of the other one, I am not proud of it.

I have to agree with JW. Round ball and patch shoots like a dream in most MLs. That's all my son uses and he puts down everything he shoots. And that's with an older CVA kit gun. Trick is to get out and experiment with different size patches and different powders.

I however do things a little different with my Thompson. I shoot patch and ball, but also a slightly heavier half round/conical ball. Got both impacting together at 50 yards using the same powder, but with different charges.

Another little trick to learn, is to load you rifle this season, and if not fired, not clear it until after season or next year and still have it go "BANG"............Art

My muzzle blasters always go bang buddy! Aways. Im a clean freak. The very few misfires Ive had are a result of too many shots and no cleaning every 6-8 rounds. Other than that, its BOOM every time, no matter how long its been loaded. Im a freak about cleaning my muzzle blasters.

I hear that a lot ;D. Especially from my younger brother. Heck, he hunted with his ML all last season and his gun wasn't even charged :o. In the end he got his buck , but that's another story (and a funny one it is)......Art

I have a friend that so dislikes cleaning his that he wont shoot unless it is a trophy type buck .
He went 6 years till he dropped the hammer and the deer !
That was 3 years ago so it is most likely not been shot since .
Not me I will shoot me a squirrel or ground hog with out hesitation because I enjoy cleaning my guns  !
A patch and ball will do all you need Chris , them maxis are for over the 3oo yd mark

I have shot 425 gr conicals out of my 54 cal from day one,  a few round balls too.  Went to a 200yd range with a buddy of mine who shot his high power rifle, and he was amazed how after a few shots with my old 54, I was lobbing in some rounds into a six inch bull.  I love my double/set trigger set up.  It's fun to shoot.  Over the years I've knocked a few does over backwards with it.  ;D

ya D Bear them big guns pack a wallop for sure, no Grizz around here so I see no need for that much gun !
Glad you enjoy it

Long distance shooting is were you find out what you and your gun are made out of
Over 500 yds for the big bores and over 300 for small bores
As a young child the neighbor man shot long distance front stuffers  in competition
They started at 300 yds and went on out but the barrels on them bench guns were 1&1/2 inches across the flats some maybe more, many were under hammer cap locks
I have seen a lot of stuff in my life for sure !
Life is good for sure !!

A nice Osage ram rod really sets these MLs apart Peary. Got any arrow making skills? ;D

Hey, where's your rear sight.? Just noticed that. My eyes are to bad anymore to use open sights so I went to a peep on mine. Good eyes or bad, they're worth the extra green. ;)  Art

Sights? Im an insticitve shooter Artsy!

Kiddin', I just put a set of Williams Fire Sights on it. The back was gone when I got it. It was $50 for a TC rear sight, or $38 for a pair of made in Michigan sights.

I use the William's fibre optic front sights along with the peep sights on my Thompson, love it! Other that that I build my own fibre optic front sights. I groove out the front sight and super glue a piece of the fibre optic on. Works great!

I saw an original "chunk gun" with 1 3/4 wide barrel in 40 caliber.  The barrel had dovetails every couple inches from the back of the gun to almost halfway down the barrel.  As the shooter aged, he had the rear sight moved forward!!!

For my last gun, I set the rear sight on the top flat of the octagon barrel and lined it up with my eye.  I kept sliding it forward until everything came into focus.  That's where I cut the dovetails.

Old dog.  New trick.

Never had the privilege of young eyes , Glasses as long as I can remember .
I guess I would shoot instinctive now a days
I remember the days when a halo on the front sight made a big difference, and we would get into the girls fingernail polish to brighten up the sights , the for runner to the fiber optics you speak of I guess ! Hot pink or pearly white were the best options then but with the stuff the kids wear today there would be all kids of wild options
Glad to see things don't really change much !
