Title: Michigan Elk Hunt
Post by: RyanR on December 12, 2013, 09:37:12 pm
I was lucky enough to draw one of Michigans 200 Elk tags.  My tag allowed me to shoot a cow only.  I hunted the Pigeon River State forest which is a large tract of land about the size of a county with only dirt roads running through it.  They do not allow ATV's or horses.  The place is beautiful.  I took my hunting buddy and my dad along for the fun.  I knew I would probably get my elk because I think the success rate is around 85% and I took the whole season off work.  The season opened this past saturday and I really wanted to get an elk in the first two days.  My buddy had to go back to work on Monday and I really wanted him there to share the experience.  As luck would have it I got my elk early the first afternoon.  What a good time.  Every time I look at pictures from the hunt or think about it I just smile.  In fact for the first few hours after I shot my elk I dont think you could have pryed the smile off my face.  My dad said this was the best hunt he has every been on and I have to agree.  I was just glad I could share it with both of them.  Thats what makes the hunt, sharing the experiences with family and friends.

That's awesome Ryan!! I've been applying for a michigan elk tag forever. Sounds like it ended well. Congrats, and thanks for sharing. Where abouts in Michigan you live?

Awesome job Ryan! I've heard it's the tag of once in 2 lifetimes. I've been putting in for the last 5 or so years and hope to someday be one of the chosen few. Congrats on getting drawn and on the successful hunt.

Congratulations!  That sounds like a great time and I'm glad you got to share it with your dad and friend. What caliber did you use? Is that a Remington 700?

Congratulations Ryan, what a special hunt.  It's great to see you got to spend it with your Pop and I always like to see that there are elk left in the "eastern woodlands".  Wish there were more!

Congratulations, again.
