Thai is a bow I made for a guy in West Virginia. Kind of plain for my tastes as far as the actual bow but it came out AMAZING!! 8) really happy with it. Very fast, went completely through my target and is long for my draw and I was only pulling around 40#. It is 50# @ 28" bocote tips with old osage "underlay"? Very cool looking and weight saving I think. Leather handle and white tail deer fur rest. Super accurate. The guy named it "inokimi" which means happy. It is 70" ttt and 68" ntn. Slightly more eliptical tiller. Very cool how bit turned out. I am a little sad I have to send it to him and there is no way I would have sold it if I didn't build it for him.
-
More pics and money shot!
-
Pics got stretched a little. Let's see if this full draw is better.
-
Those are strange and wonderful tips, really out of the box kind of thinking! Nice looking bow all around.
-
Great bow, woodbandit. That nock scares me a little, but I'm sure Osage can handle it.
-
If that knock were on anything besides osage or hickory I'd refuse to draw it, but that looks sweet!
-
Wow that is very sweet very unique nocks hopefully they don't break
-
Damn that's nice...
-
EEEEEEEETTTTTTT phhhonnnnnne hhhhoooooommme lol idk why but your nocks remind me of E.T's finger lol.
hope that finger doesnt poke someones eye out
-
Trippy and interesting. Cool idea ya got there.
-

Lol that's what I thought. I have shot it about 150 times and it never broke. Thought it would be something kind of special and when I first string it I was praying. It works though and it made a MAJOR change in the speed it went from fast to HOLY CRAP!
-
Beautiful job on the bow and the tiller. The nocks are very risky even on osage if you cut across the back of the bow. It will simply peel off the ring it is attached to. I am very surprised you got 150 arrows through it so far. Such a nice bow it would be a shame to risk it.

never knew nock styles had an affect on a bows fps
-
That is such a nice and nicely tillered bow BUT I would seriously rethink those nocks dude......specially if it's going to someone else. The point where the string is hangin on is below the line of the bottom belly ring so that means you only got about 1in of ring holding that hook on there. It could just split right off of there at any second. It's not a matter of "if" but when.
It'd be real easy to do, just cut a nock where you still have overlay at the tip. you could even leave those hooks on for looks just don't use them for nocks that's just askin for it (Osage or not).
Like Badger says, it's such a nice bow it'd be a shame to risk it.

Yeah, everything I've done, tested, compared, etc, indicates that while these tips are cool for now they will eventually break and are not mass efficient. Maybe osage, and maybe hickory, could last a little in that shape with all the force pulling the rings apart, but nothing is going to change that that is dead weight.
I'd only believe a crono. No offense.
-
nice job bud! But please do yourself a favor and the guy who will receive the bow and cut those nocks off and move them down a half inch. you got plenty of length. once again nice job and I hate to bust your chops but those nocks will break
-
Can you get some scraps of wood and do a build along on those tips those are brilliant!
-
Those nocks are going to fail, as a few others have alluded to. Since this bow is going to someone else, give him the best opportunity to enjoy it. Cut some new nocks in, and don't violate the back in doing so............Art
-
Listen to the advice you've been given ;)
-
Nice bow, but you are asking for a ring separation at the tips.
-
I didn't want to rain on yer parade, but I gotta agree with the guys who think these nocks are gonna be trouble. It would sure scare me to pull it back. It does give me some ideas though >:D Thanks, and still a really nice bow. Doob
-
I'd clue some leather on the tips jn the big grooves. If that Delams it's gonna hurt
-
I forgot. Sweet looking bow.
I just wouldn't want the string digging through the rings. If it gets in a pithy part it's gonna cut like a draw knife
-
Changed the tips and sent it off. I didn't get any pics of the tips tho. :'(
-
I like the chinese proverb you quote under your posts....its kind of ironic , considering the comments! good to be original ....anyone can copy whats been done before....and who knows....they look like they'll break , but maybe they wont...
-
I accidentally cut into the back a bit on the top knock of a sevriceberry bow. The wood is dense, (not quite as much as osage) so i thought it would be fine but what do ya know i went stumping with it and the nock broke right off. I was very lucky it didn't split the wood but i learned my lesson well, wood just can't hold up to that kind of strain.

Why don't I believe you? ??? You posted this last night(sat eve),and didnt post again until today(Sunday) ...what shipping service is open on a Sunday? ??? And what sealer can dry that fast, and be ready to be boxed up? I smell BS :-X
-
Osage is not as strong as hickory or elm when it comes to seperation of growth rings, I am surprised that bow got 2 shots off.
-
I know about that Chinese proverb, thats why I put it there. I always do something like this and people say it can't be done but I do it any way and that's always what I want to teach. Sometimes things don't work out for someone like board bows then everyone turns there nose up to it. Somebody goes and tries a board bow anyways and finds out he can make a good bow from it and now everyone has made probably at least one. Thought it really described my thoughts for bow making >:D
-
Plow ahead against the grain if you must. Just please wear safety glasses,OK? And, maybe send a pair out with the bows you send away.
-
Bandit, that might be ok if you are planning on keeping the bow but most of us know from experience that those knocks will certainly fail if the guy actually shoots the bow. I seriously doubt they will last 10 shots. I know you said you shot 150 arrows through it but I can't see that holding very long. No one is critisizig just trying to give you good advice.
-
Often with innovation, there's improvement. I don't see any improvement on nock design here. These tips are not lighter (they're more than likely heavier), they massively violate grain, and are likely not going to survive. In all good conscience, you should not give this bow to anyone else.

Seems to be a lot of that goin' around here lately. :(

I think if he had done the usual two hundred shots I think most of us use as a minimum test before we call a bow finished he would have had that knock tear off, been able to sand it down and put in a proper knock without much lost time.
He's young. I'm young too, I know what it's like to know everything and be able to improve on anything-- I've just been hit in the head enough already ;)
-
Agreed. Just remind me not to get a bow from you. Great tiller, but those nocks scare the living crap out of me.
Jon
-
Well I wouldnt go that far, I would gladly take a bow from him, especially with the quality of workmanship and eye for tiller. I would just hope he realizes his nock design isnt good and understands why. Kid has promise and skills. Give him that.
-
I agree with you sleek, great tiller, but hope he takes the advice given to him. Just hope the people that he claims pay him 300 dollars for the work get their money's worth.
Jon
-
Just no way of knowing... But if his work is all like that, I bet they are. Just keep the experiments and not sell or give them to other people. You dont want anybody to get hurt other than yourself.

Wow some rude comments in here the dude did a very very nice job on the bow
-
I agree that it looks nice but he did something all of his sources told him not to do and sent the bow to someone without testing it thoroughly. The tiller shouldn't be a problem, but then that thing delaminates, and it will delaminate, he's going to be in a situation he could have easily avoided.
Like I said, he's young. He's supposed to make mistakes, and he'll learn from them, but maybe he shouldn't give people things that just might be mistakes.
-
Thank you guys for the half nice answers ::) Lol  I did change the nocks to just a normal looking tip and I won't do these tips again but I will always be trying new nocks that don't violate the back. It was more of an accident then I went with it and made it look awesome. Too bad I had to cut them off :'( and thank you guys a lot for the tillering compliments. That made my day. I have a laminate, two snakey osage bows, and a yew bow for me that are my Christmas projects. One snakey osage has the coolest look ever. That one will be my baby and that thing will look 100 times better than this one. It snakes side to side and roller coasters 4" up and down 2 times and has a few more roller coasters that are 2" up and down. The laminate is for the guy that let's me use his bandsaw even though it really doesn't work with the knotty wood I use. The yew bow is for me and I am going to use some new materials for the tips and stuff. This won't be the last of the bandit!

Ya I know. We have a trade in the works with knives and that turned me off to him. I will still trade with him because spite is a horrible condition that is buried in every humans heart. But he just un-made my day :(
-
you guys have to admit, the bandit took this criticism well, unlike some others of late, and your tiller did look good ;), bub
-
Well, nice bow! Cool nocks too, but my mind is saying uuuuhhhh... when will those break?
and FYI- To be honest... I can see those nocks holding up... if you think about it.
most of the force is parallel to the wood grain. Even at full draw, it might last a while. I cut about 1/4th inch into the back of a 50# red oak(64" long, bend in the handle, 29" draw), with tips only 1/4th inch wide and 5/8ths deep.
hasn't broken yet.
Also... Who on here posts a bow the minuite its done????
The spar varnish I use drys in about 2 hours in a fairly dry environment.
The PP varnish I made with a mix of acetone, rubbing alcohol, and pine pitch dries tack free in only 30 mins in sunlight.
and you can package a bow sunday night and send it out in the morning... and it only takes about 20 mins to make very nice self nocks on a bow.
To be honest, he made a nice bow... I would happily take it, even with the iffy nocks.

When did we ever have a trade for a knife in the works? I think we had one pm between the two of us a couple months ago, and never went further than that. maybe you missed my second post, I'm just being brutally honest. You have claimed in the past that you charge 300-400 dollars per bow. I'm just saying that I would never pay that much for a bow with nocks like that that are almost sure to break. JMHO, and I'll gladly remove my first comment if it ruins your day. Sorry to offend you bud.

Squirrel, on a red oak board bow that is 1/4 sawn cutting into the back is not a problem, If you cut into a stave bow you will seperate the rings, even if left very thick. Rings will seperate without too much effort.
-
This may be a dumb question but overlays cut and glued on an angle through the growth rings would that be considered violated or would the glue and over lay help keep it all together?

The epoxy and overlay should keep it together just fine.

The overlay goes over all of the violated rings like a cap, pulling on all of them relatively equally. Add good glue and it's pretty much always safe.
-
Well, not to call you out in the least bit, but I am very sure that EVERYBODY here would feel allot better if you could at least show pics of the nocks you cut off even though you sent the bow, you should still have those. THey would make great coat, hat, or tool hangers in the shed or garage.

You have some serious skills. You know what you are doing. More importantly, you have humility. That puts you way out in front in my book.

I take a little pride in my bows and I admit it is like pulling teeth giving any of them away. And I have learned humility well since I joined this site. My first post was one of the biggest fights I have ever seen on here. LOL that was funny. Are you hard core? And people went ape on that. It is funny looking back at it now.

Then you should make him an offer on a similar bow. $300 - $400 is what I heard they're worth.
-
If I had 300 I'd buy one from him, then turn around and sell it at a gun show for 350 just to show you that ain't an unfair price.

For that bow with that tiller, proper knocks, and a decent number of test arrows through it sure, I'd probably pay more than that. What he shipped was, apparently, just missing the couple hundred test shots, so I don't doubt it could have been worth it with that tiller and finish work.
I'd expect to be paid to take an untested bow with extreme ring violating knocks and shoot it.
Bandit took the criticism well and abandoned the path known to fail. The bow could have been tested better, but I think he can get away with it with that tiller and the fact that it's osage.
Also commenting on refinishing the tip, I've done self knocks from pencil mark to ready to sand in eight minutes.I think he could have pulled it off, and I think we might as well give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he's earned it with how he's taken out comments IMHO.

Thanks and I will never cut the back that bad again. I will do the same shape and look but it won't violate the back.

That is a huge compliment thank you.

Hey Bandit, you can get the same shape and look just by leaving the sap wood on the back at the tips, then carve that sap wood all day long on the tips to get what ever shape you want. I seen that before and looks amazing. I would do it myself but honestly, I just quit chasing heart wood rings all together anymore and do sapwood backed osage. Reasons being: It works, not many folks do it because its always been done the other way, making me kinda unique, I'm lazy and this way is faster, and I am less likely to damage the back on thin ringed osage. Good luck kid, your doin it right.

Thanks, all the osage I get is bought and it doesn't have any sapwood but the guy I buy it from would gladly give me some sapwood backed osage. I had an idea to add really thick overlays, taper the belly a bunch and add those dark osage under lays that way I can carve and get the same look without the danger. I think that is going to be one of my signature tips ;) a little bandit creativity right there  lol. I have a few bows that are tillered shot and sanded but haven't been finished so after I have some fun with that yew build along and during the build of that laminate bow I will make a build along on those tips. Actually, I will do them on the yew build along so just follow that and I will post how to do the tips. Thanks for the nice comments and I think my bow came out pretty nice.
-
Well bandit I really like the look of the bow. Tiller looks great. Those knocks are scarey. If built up and shaped without violations it's look sweet.
What if he wrapped the nocks in sinew? Could that of prevented a de lam?
-
Very nice bow,I have to agree with what has been said about the nocks, scary. :)
Of course I ant much of a risk taker when it comes to bows. ???
