Here's another one:
Red dogwood (cornus sanguinea) extremely hard and dense, a decrowned stave. Two layers of deer sinew, not too thick. Then painted with earth pigments and coal in hide glue. To seal the back off, I glued on some gut, that's why it's shyny. The string is linen.
48" long, 15 oz, 76# at 26" draw.

Just made it with the last light :P
-
Thats a stunner. More pictures in a better light would be brilliant.
-
wow!very nice.
-
THAT is a cool bow!
-
Love it!
-
Thats is a SAAAAAWEET bow bow man! love the profile, paint, size... all of it!
-
Dwardo, thomas h, smoke, lostarrow and NeolithicMan, thanks for the kind words. I've been working on this one off and on for a long time, at least a year. Grinding rocks, shredding sinew, witthling. I like how it came out. Ended up way heavier than I expected in the beginning.
Dwardo, I shall try to get some more pics if it gets sunny tomorrow, maybe also a pic on the tree cause it's pretty hard to do the draw shots with the timer and have all the angles right in the end. And maybe a pic of the belly.
-
Really cool bow!
-
I like that bow a lot, well done
-

That is a killer bow my friend, you really got the most out of that stave I'd say. Cool profiles, curves and paint. Long draw length and heavy weight for such a short bow, I'm amazed when someone is able to pull that off without a ton
of set or a broken bow. Nicely done Jodocus!
I'd be up for more pics of this one too.
-
Nice bow.
-
woah! :)
-
That is an awesome bow! Nice weight. Bet it has some good cast. Like i've said before i really like your bows, keep up the good work!

Yep, you got everything that one has to offer up! Good job.
-
Very interesting little bow, really nice! Is my eye playing with games with me or do you have an irregular tiller there? Is that knock point center, or not? Differential limbs?
-
Thanks to all of you for looking and liking!
I got a pic of the belly and a pic of the tiller on the tree. Now that I've been staring at the pic, I think I might scrape the upper limb a tiny bit more.
I also included a clean top down shot for the profile. and added the with and debth measurements.
You can further see the back from up close, cause I wanted to show the gut layer. I'm unhappy with it. I seals off nicely, but does not stick well enough and came up in all the concave parts... :-\ It also smeared the paint while glueing it on. I'll need to work on the technique, aqs I like the stuff itself.
-
Interesting how different it looked in the other photos. Very nice.
-
Hehe Parnell, our signatures match nicely!
-
That's funny! You're right.
I've got a 48" piece of an exotic wood that grows down here I want to do pretty much the same thing with. This is a great example.
-
Oh yess !
That's one gorgeous bow....

Now that's a bow. Great job, and a contender for BOM. I love the colors you chose.
-
nice work Jodocus, 76#! Betcha that thing zings 'em. Love the paint job, that dogwood is pretty stuff too.
-
Thanks guys! IdahoMAtt: when it comes to mineral pigments I can collect around here, choices get kind of simple. I have a brownish yellow as well, but then that's it.
-
Brilliant thanks for the extra photos. Its shots like these that help us all learn and imagine the bow better in the hand.
Excellent bow.

By Paleo I am assuming you mean that you used primtive tools. Is that right? Can you list your tools and materials? I have been wanting to do a stone-aged bow from tree to shooter, and would love to know what other folks are using.
-
I thought I commented on this bow right after you posted but I must have forgot. Anyway, I like it.
-
nice

No, sorry. I used paleo cause it's not some authentic replica of any actual style but did restrict myself in material choice.
The tools I used are a workbench, a drawknife and two rasps. Also some 100 grit sandpaper. A mortar, and glass jars for the colours and the glue.
Materials is the dogwood stem, deer sinew, hide glue, reddish clay, charcoal, white chalk, linen string, beeswax, pine pitch and a cow gut.

Me too. But I still suck so badly at flintknapping that I think it is a long way to go. :-\
