i met a very hysterical gentleman while i was at a shoot in Moses Lake, Washington. i was very impressed with his artistry of the craft. though he is not a member of PA i thought i would post a few of his bows :) he makes some off the most beautiful short plains bows and character yew bows. woods ranging from vinemaple to osage.
the first is a sinew backed horn bellied osage bow

That first one is a knock out!
-
Jims a great guy.He was one of the great secrets of self bowyery for quite a while, till Paul Brunner was taught by him and started spreadin the word bout Jim.
Hes originally a Nevada boy,so of course hes gotta be Great.LOL
-
Nice bows, is the arrow rest on the 1st one a elk whistler? Ed

yep
-
yup...hes a heckuva "closet" bowyer....ive seen his stuff in the past around online from others....youd be surprised how many guys are out there making bows that aren't online...I bet they outnumber those who do? ???
-
Oh yeah I bet there is. No question.
-
I've seen pics of his work before also, he does 1st rate work. Thanks for posting those Bryce.
-
Very cool, thanks for posting these :)
-
I might post more for him. He recently learned how to use Facebook and is blowing up my news feed with these spectacular bows :)
-
very cool, thanks for introducing us to his work
chuck

According to Paul Brunner, he taught Jim and the student quickly surpassed the teacher. I still have my copy of TB featuring "The birth of a Bowyer".
Jim sure has n eye for artistic flair although I don't care for excessively wrapped bows. Makes me wonder if anything is hiding under wraps in the working section. ;)
-
I'm in love with that first one :-*
Thanks for posting these Bryce. Please share some more of his work if you can.
-
Things a little too slow on LW for ya lately there Patrick. ;)
-
Not really, why do you ask "grandson of Ishi"? lol
-
Pat, can you remember what year that was? I have most of the back issues and would love to look back on it.
Thanks
-
I'll dig it out. Between 96-98.
-
Well,
Cause i got my info, from the man himself, not by readin it in a mag, book,or the internet.LOL
And its Ishi Boy,not grandson of Ishi.
And thats Mr Ishi boy to you.LOL
-
Well then take it up with Mr Paul Brunner. lol
Perhaps you are confusing the fact that Paul initially taught Jim the basics and then Paul ended up going to Jim later and learning the complex stuff?
Either way it's probably important for you to learn that a horse doesn't have a front hock. ;)
You don't have to ask the horse that in person either. Trust the Farrier's journal for that one. :D
Heck, you can even take my word for that. :-*

Wow those are some pretty bows. I love the first one, and the color of the yew on the second one is gorgeous.
-
Who cares who taught who. The bows are sweet!
I agree Matt I wanna try a horn belly like that!
-
Yes they are sweet and Jim is a very knowledgeable bowyer and a heck of a nice guy. They shoot fantastic and everyone i have ever talked to that has one of his bows, dearly loves it.

Here's a couple he's got hanging

Yeah, he's been hiding out in broad daylight. Just not online. He's a master fer sure and I'm quite certain there are a few more like him out there.) I've met a few pretty fair bowyers and their not real into the new fangled technology. In fact most of em are the loner type. Not hermits mind you, they know how to act in public. But their thing is just doing their thing. Kinda like the rest of us, only once we got runnin water and lights we figured out how get someone to show us how to get online and see what is happenin somewhere otherdn here.
I was working in Topeka couple years back and figured there was someone up there might have a shoot going on. So I called Mike at The nocking point and ask him ( he's in Winchester not too far away). He told me about this shoot put on by some club I'm too intoxicated to remember, but thats not the point. I found it though and there was probably 12 guys there along the Kansas river, all shooting mighty fine self bows they made themselves. 90% were over 60 and there were a couple ole boys that were in their 70's. That was a cool find fer sure. So like I said before, I"ll bet there is a whole lot more guys doing this thing we love so much that are'nt even on the radar.
Tell that fella hi from all of us Bryce and that we really appreciate his work. Oh and by the way, he needs to quite hoardin all his stuff and send me one of his sorrier bows, lol. Danny
-
Lol yeah I've been known to be called a hermit, but this hermit apparently doesn't know how to act in public.(or so in told:)
I sent James the link to this post. Hey yah never know he might soon be a new member of PA :)
-
My hoard of bows looks the same.....lol  that's awesome, and glad I'm not alone in that dept.
Hope he signs up here....ya know a lot of us are reclusive folks for the most part, and this is where we come to socialize when needed(and shoots)....at least I am
-
Beautiful work, I'd like to see more.
-
The article "'Birth of a Bowyer" is in the June/July issue of '98 Traditional Bowhunter mag.
-
He has a nice collection there, it would be nice to hear his tory.
-
There is a guy on that mountain man show named Jim from Montana that makes and sells bows. I wonder if it is the same Jim.
-
Well he's looking into signing up here at PA maybe he'll chime in :)
-
Steve,
If im not mistaken, the guy on the shows name is Tom and it is not the same person.
-
2 stunners there especially the first one.
-
WoW. It's so nice to see such excellent work! This site is full of amazing stuff and this just makes it even better. Hope he signs up and shares more. Very very cool! Every person we can get on here makes this place better! ....as long as they are cool.
