Look what I got today. ;We are getting our fence repaired at the shop and trees cleared and this Mulberry has been growing in the chain link fence for years. I saw the guy with the chain saw this morning and told him how I wanted him to cut it. Check out how big the growth rings are :) Some, almost 2 1/2".
-
Wow, 2 1/5 thats a fast growing tree. Ed
-
Great tree, but those always seem bitter sweet to me. They produce some great berries and great bows.....:-)
-
:o now that some wide rings..............I'm surprised that there's not more sapwood.

You sure that 2 1/2" isn't a misprint Eddie :o. Too much work there for me. Have fun.......Art

nice score Eddie

Ooops! Looked at it closer and tape measure in hand. The one I thought was 2.5" is actually 3 rings, the smallest .5". The rest are 1 to 1.5" wide. The log is 12" at the widest point. Still a good'n.
-
Yep I say it's a keeper

You shouldve been able to tell it was big ringed before cutting it by the diameter and the stage of development of its bark(still not mature),and a feature to look for when cutting some woods.....nuttin like a one ringed bow..lol
-
Nice catch, Eddie. I've never seen mulberry with that kind of coloration.
-
Yea, Chris, I've been watching this tree grow for 12 years and we have a long growing season here. But, my two osage trees don't grow worth a darn down here.

Pat; I've talked to Steve about our mulberry. It seems to resemble osage a lot more then the red mulberry that grows up north. I've had people try to give or trade me some from up y'alls way and I don't want it. It seems a light less dense then what grows down here and this is almost as yellow as osage.

Could it be the sandy soil?? your climate should be good warm and wet................
-
I think so. Our office and shop is built on Reclaimed phosphate mining land. All sand tailings with phosphate.
-
Never worked mulberry before but i do like the berries they produce. Mmmm.. tasty :)
-
Bet you can see the monthly rings n that...
-
Nice haul,is that the one you showed me while I was down ?

Eddie, that's probably Chinese (white) mulberry. I haven't had any problems with our red mulberry, either-I love it, made everything from flatbows to a stacked ELB from it. One of my favorite woods. It's not as dense as osage, but it's tough as nails, and it grows straight without all the pin knots. You can usually chase a ring on a stave in a few minutes.
-
Wow big rings mulberrys known for it tho Pretty decent bow wood and for how fast it grows not to soft
-
Pappy, yep, that's the one.
Steve, does White Mulberry have the red fruit? This one did.
-
Yep, white-turning reddish fruit that's smaller than the native mulberry fruits. A white mulberry tree looks just like an osage without thorns until you look at the leaves. Bark and all looks pretty much the same.
-
Wow! Hope there is a stave with my name on it in there. Let me know if you want help processing it, got 2 weeks off coming up!
-
That's what it is Steve.
Steve P., there should be plenty.
-
Dang, you always seem to be at the right place at the right time! Nice! Hmmm been growing on reclaimed soil from the phosphate mines..... Does it glow in the dark? :o
Man, how long are you going to let cure? I would like buy a stave from you. It looks like it might have some twisty turns in it. I have one in my back yard, but not that big. It is only about five or six inches in diameter. Bugs got the leaves, but it will come back. Yep a very hard, and hardy tree. I have cut some limbs from it while pruning it.
