Title: Replica attempt of an old bow (pic heavy)
Post by: RyanY on December 25, 2013, 01:45:09 am
Long time no see!  ;D Been super busy lately but was able to fit making a bow into my time on break from school. This bow is an attempt to recreate an old bow that was left in my fathers house when we moved in. It had a large degree of side bending from twist and because of its age I never strung it up. I figured the only way I'd get to shoot it is if I made one just like it!  :P My guess was that the wood is hickory with a maple handle. I attempted to follow the dimensions of width and the handle and fades as closely as possible. While building my bow started to develop a lot of twist due to the way the wood wanted to bend. My guess is the old bow had the same problem causing its twist. Luckily I was able to keep it from being too severe. My bow came in at 50#@28" although it hasn't been shot in so that could change. It's 66" ntn and has a shorter lower limb. I wont babble on about other dimensions unless someone asks. Took very little set but will probably settle in a little after some shooting. It came in at 18oz were the old bow was 19.5oz. Maybe you guys can help me guess where the discrepancies lie that causes the differences in mass. I had to go with a different style handle wrap because I didn't have a long enough strip of leather. Osage was used for the dot in the handle. Anyways, it was a pleasure to make and a great experience. I felt as though I was seeing the bow being made by the maker. Would definitely recommend trying to replicate any old bows you guys may have. Thanks for looking!  :)

Very nice job on that, was your dad impressed? The mass? the other bow may simply habe been denser or had a thicker cross section.

Now that is to cool 8) Nice work! One thing though, I bet your tiller is better than the original bow when it was new...Dude you dialed that one in...

Aw Man I love that bow! I use to have an old bow just like that. What are the dimensions of that handle? It looks way to thin for a glue-on handle, but obviously it works and looks sweet!

Nice accurate looking replication. Great attention to detail, even looks like you got the back and belly edges rounded to the same radius. Just has to age now to get the patina of the older one.

Thanks guys! No names or markings on the bow that I could see. I don't know enough about old bows to say if it was sold or home made.

Badger, He thought it was pretty neat but doesn't take a whole lot of interest in my works.

Victor, It is very narrow at just around 5/8" at the narrowest point. I had a previous experience where a wider handle broke on a lighter bow so I've been nervous drawing this one back. But I wasn't going to cut any corners on this one.  ;)

Pearlie, You know I love my white wood!  >:D Really lucked out though. Besides the twist this was an excellent piece of wood.

Nice work there, and glad to see you posting. When I first started lookin around on here you were doing some pretty inspiring bows.
Can hickory have run offs like that on the back too? I have a stave that took a curve like a banana but if I don't have to follow the grain perfectly and straighten it a little, it could work I guess.
Thanks, Marco

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the kind words.  :)

Marco, I've seen hickory bows with some of the worst run off imaginable. Even the old bow has some visible run offs that apparently didn't give it any problems. So there's evidence that it can definitely take it but I still try and find the most straight grain possible.

Guy, I'd like to get my hands on some lemonwood. Is it difficult to find nowadays? Hope you've been doing well!

Cool Replica Ryoon.  I I like the idea of recreating early American archery equipment too.  Nice work all around.

Nice Bow. Recreating an earlier design is a very interesting Idea. I vote Ben Pearson also, as the Indian Archery Bows of that era had red, blue and black ends on their handle wraps...Or at least the ones I own do....Great work..

what would the small piece of round wood be used for, that is just above the handle? If it stuck out a little it could be an arrow rest, but it doesn't...

The twist in the original bow would put the string along the left side of the handle, making it center shot. That would be perfect for a right handed shooter. Wonder if that was intentional.

Great job on reproducing that bow, I would like to have one just like it...very nice!

Good to see you posting Ryan. That's a great looking bow that you re-created. I had one just like the original a long, long  time ago. Until the neighbor tried to string it , backwards...  :(

Good to see Ya back Ryan - good job on the Bow ! The original sure looks like Lemonwood to Me for sure - I have about 20 of them. I believe that You can get Lemonwood now - I think that they eased the trade Embargo with Cuba, and the wood is available again. Bob
