Hi folks,
I was plesantly suprised to find this forum and see others neat work.
I carved this deer last fall. The deer wood is sycamore from down by the river.
The plack is redwood I chainsaw slabbed when I was out in California.
The horns are from a skull I found.
-
Very nice!
-
Thanks Ben,
I am new here and may have made a mistake posting this here.
Although carving is a primitive skill I may be in default using a chain saw
for slabbing and quick material removal.
If this is a bad thing I hope you all will set me straight.
thanks Zuma

That is uncommonly sweet! Love it, Zuma. Feel free to post more of your artwork!
After all, it has no wheels, no fiberglass, no sights!
-
That is neat, one of a kind.
-
That's a great idea! Good work.
-
Nice work...Maybe it was an old chainsaw You used...You Know primitive as to today's designs...
-

:) :-[ lol
Thanks so much. I was actually inspired to do a deer by one I saw from an archeological dig at a muesum in Florida years ago. I was taking deer with bow and arrow when I was 15 or 16.
I have a dep respect for the creatures and love filming them and their antics.
Here is a horse I did out of sycamore also. I don't shoot em but American Indians
rode them while hunting buffalo with spear and bow. LOl.
-
That is really neat. Nice work.
-
looks more real than some taxidermy work ive seen..well done!!!
-
Thanks Ryan and Dog
I have a few more up my sleeve but the Dall or Bighorn sheep
is next if I can find a way to keep the horns from splitting or cracking
with the grain of the tree.
-
I wood (baaaad pun) love to see you do a pronghorn antelope. With just a little touch of a woodburner, you could fill in the black mask and the cheek patches. I can almost see it now.
In fact, I want your contact information. I wanna hire you to do my next antelope mount!!!
-
Wow,
Thanks, paoli, Mohawk and Gus.
Pm sent JW. That's a neat offer. If you can wait till spring for results.
All the best Zuma.
Oh! I did a Gator lol Hold still you
-
How many hours did it take to carve the 8 pt buck?
-
It was the better part of a week or so.
I think I spent more time orientating the antlers securely.
Keeping the ears intact was chalenging.
-
Now that is some nice work, very talented. :)

Wow... very cool!
-
:) :)
Thanks Pappy and adb. There is just something genetic about wood and rocks.
They both have been good to me.

I think that "genetic" thing is called patience ;)

I carved this one out of a barrier island pine tree.
It was the victim of a hurricane. Folks used to leave all sorts of offerings,
including Joe Cain Madi Gras beads. lol
The care taker was transferred and the piece fell victim to termites and disappeared.

Hey JW, My buddy finally coughed up the antler he promised me.
Pretty small but it gives me some idea of proportion.

OUTSTANDING talent you have. I really like all the carvings but especially the deer.
-
Thanks JEB,
I am pretty partial to the deer myself.
I like this little guy a little too.

I was doing my best to reply to dug out canoe thread when this log came to mind.
