Title: Another kudo horn nocked bow
Post by: toomanyknots on December 28, 2013, 06:46:51 pm
I really like these horns for nocks. They come out looking like glass, and they work softer and easier than buffalo horn. I wish you could find more of them, I can't find no more though for sale any where. Plus, most of em were too small to use. These are on a bamboo backed ipe bow, 47# or so at 28".

It's crazy how you can see through them:

Here's the rest of the bow sort of, no fulldraw, sorry,  :-[.

As others have said, you really have this style of horn nock figured out!

Can I ask for clarification on what species of animal the horn came from?  Kudu have those lovely double helix twisted horns, but every image I have seen has black horn.

Thanks yall. I ordered these from a factory in Israel that makes shofars. I don't know exactly what species they are though, other than kudo, I believe they are kudo anyway? I guess these are the tips they cut off before they make the mouth piece.

Oh, ok.  One image I came across when I was searching online for kudu horns was a shofar.  Must be like our pronghorn antelope with white tips on the black horn.  In case I ever hunt kudo, I will keep the tips for an ELB!

(A shofar is a trumpet made from the horn of any member of the bovidae family except a cow.  Useful in battle should you come up against any walled city known as Jericho.)

Shouldn't have told me.  Now I got to go look for kudo horn. ;D

Looks great, I am getting ready to try to make some out of water buff horn if my ELB survives

Yeah, a lot of the horn tips have streaks and spots of black in them, those are gonna look cool when turned into nocks.

Great horns and great bow. I've been wanting to make one like that for some time, can you give us more specs of the bow?
Thanks

Great horns and great bow. I've been wanting to make one like that for some time, can you give us more specs of the bow?

Thank you. I started with a stave 74" tip to tip, 1" wide 7" in the middle continuously (3 1/2" on either side of center), tapering to 1/2" tips. With this bow, 1/2" was too wide of tips, which I further had to reduce to 3/8" to even get em bending. I had to drill out the horns with a 3/8" bit I have for really thin tipped elbs. The center was also continuously about 13/16" or so thick for 7" in the center (again 3 1/2" on each side of center), tapering to I guess 3/8" tips.
