As I said in my "...need help..." thread this lemonwood stave was given to me by James Parker a few years ago. I knew from the start I wanted to make a classic lemonwood bow and an ALB was a traditional lemonwood bow in the 1930s and 1940s. Being that this stave is a sawn board I thought a hickory backing would be a good idea and it is also traditional.
After getting some ideas from other members I started by adding the riser to the belly first. This is the way I used to do it but its been so long I wasn't sure. Pearlie said to do it this way so I did. I need someone to blame if it screws up. ;D This first pic is the first dry lay-up. I wanted to be sure everything lined up well before glue-up.

I'm using an osage riser block. You can see in this pic that the riser's basic shape was cut out. I retained the removed wedges to help when gluing the riser to the lemonwood belly. You can see the cut lines if you look closely.

Urac is my glue of choice for this bow.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB005_zps95da3115.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB005_zps95da3115.jpg.html)
I mixed up the Urac glue using the volume method; 2 parts of the liquid and one part of the dry. After sanding the glue surfaces on my belt sander with course belt I brushed the dust off and buttered both glue surfaces, put them together and added the clamps. I used the retained wedges to give me a flat clamping area for better clamping.

The belly/riser glue up then went into the hot box for a few hours at about 120 deg. After it came out of the hot box I let it rest until this morning to insure it had completely cooled.

I'm going to enjoy following this one.

This morning I removed the clamps and went back to the belt sander to clean up the sides and to prep the backing and belly for glue-up. I got both glue surfaces ground flat and slightly tapered the hickory backing from the handle area out to the tips.
Pearlie gave me a tip to prevent the back/belly from slipping around while adding the clamps(in my case tire tube bands). He told me to drill 2 holes through the backing and slightly into the belly at the center of the handle area. I clamped the backing to the belly so they were properly lined up and drilled two 1/8" holes. Then I cut 2 small pieces of 1/8" dowel, sanded it a bit so it fit into the holes easily but with no slack. I can already see how much tis will help.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB008_zpsfbdc939f.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB008_zpsfbdc939f.jpg.html)

...and this is where I stand now. I have the glue surfaces prepped, the alignment pegs in place so now it is time for the glue-up. I'll take pic as I go and post more later after the glue-up is ready to be worked again.
-
Do you know if Degame can grow here in S. Florida, Pat? I mean, Cuba ain't too far away. Or is there some type of soil/elevation issue?
Looks like it is going to be a very fun build. I'll be watching.
-
I am a little intimidated by the idea of a wood backing and will be watching this closely ;) ;). Cool idea on the dowels.
How do you guys get the surfaces so perfectly flat?
Thanks, Marco
-
Boards come that way Doobs.
-
Thanks for the pics Pat. Will be watching this come together ;)

I am going to be waiting not so patiently to see more. Looking great so far Pat. :)
-
Looking good pat. I would just use a little masking tape to hold parts for clamping but those pins should work fine :)
-
Bandsaw and either a belt sander or a drum sander for preping laminates.
Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
-
Your bench looks a tad tidy... I have some spare junk. I can PM you some if you like ::)
Del
-
Steve, Degame also grows in a few places in Central America too but I don't know the soil type, altitude or any of it's requirements.
Dubois, Like Pearlie said the belly and backing strips are sawn board. I smooth the gluing surfaces on my 6"x48" table top bely sander. I have a real course belt on it so it eats wood fast. This is also good prep for the glue surfaces because it gives you fresh wood to glue to plus minute grooves lengthwise from the course grit for more glue surface area. I good brush off with a stiff brush will remove the dust and ready for the glue.
...and speaking of glue...I began the glue-up. I mixed up the glue and evenly spread it on the hickory backing first then the belly
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB011_zps0ad111a7.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB011_zps0ad111a7.jpg.html)

Then I mated the two laminates, inserted the dowel alignment dowels, aligned and clamped the tips and began wrapping the limbs, one at a time.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB012_zpsddda9521.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB012_zpsddda9521.jpg.html)

Once both limbs were wrapped (did I mention how messy this can be. rubber gloves and lots of news paper are necessary) I placed the glue-up on the form(see my form Chris). I clamped the ends of the riser again and used the wedges like before. I then drew the glue-up into reflex with a large "C" clamp to just over 3/4" of reflex added.
Once everything was in good shape I took the glue-up, form and all to the hot box. I had the box preheated to a little over 110deg(F). Once in the box I placed aluminum foil over the glue-up where the lights are so I don't get hot spots. I also have a small fan in the box to keep the temp even and circulating. Here she will sit for about 2 hours. Then I will let everything cool slowly before I take the glue-up our and it will be a day or so before I take it off the form.

Del, I cleaned it up some for the glue-up and pictorial. ::)
Jesse, I just had to try something new and I liked the results.
-
I am a little intimidated by the idea of a wood backing and will be watching this closely ;) ;). Cool idea on the dowels.
How do you guys get the surfaces so perfectly flat?
Thanks, Marco
Thickness sander.
-
Good thing ya started a new thread cus I had cluttered up your other one with a bunch of worthless junk
So far so good :) .... hard to beat an alb....those ole timers knew a good thing ;)
-
I agree about the ALB Chris. I need to make more.
That wasn't clutter...no more than the other posts. ;) Since folks asked for a build along I thought I'd start a fresh new thread.
-
Thanks Pat. Learning even more. I need to do a glue up bow. Now I might have the push I need. I have a quarter sawn piece of sycamore that I want to back with walnut but have been hesitant.
-
Boards come that way Doobs.
Doohh!! :o
It is making sense now ::)
-
She's out of the oven(last night), has cooled over night and now off the form and unwrapped. She holds about 1/4" of reflex. The next step is to clean up the sides to inside the lines, give her a good looking over and get ready to start tillering. I'll take some more pics after I clean her up.
-
Good build along with pics Pat. A glue up is something I've never attempted yet and know little about it myself. The steps your taking along with the pics and explanations all make good sense and make it look less intimidating. This will be very helpful to a lot of us watching it come together. Some cool tricks like saving the wedges for clamping and using the pins at the handle. Thanks for posting this and keep it coming, this is interesting to follow.
-
When I started on here about 6 months ago there was a couple of threads that I read about glued on risers "always" popping off. Since then I have seen 2 or 3 threads with people gluing risers on. Did I miss an earth shaking advancement in glue, or have I missed something else?
-
Don, as long as the riser is above the plain of the limbs and the handle area is stiff enough not to bend a handle riser will stay put. It is not a glue issue, it is a bending handle issue that causes handles to pop off.
-
Does the riser contribute to that stiffness? I guess not, cause that would make it a glue issue, wouldn't it?
-
The problem is the riser is stiff and if the handle area of the belly flexes at all the riser pops off. The riser and glue line add a lot of stiffness but having that section of the belly slat thicker also helps. I like starting with 3/4" thick stock and reduce the fades and limbs. This keeps the plane of the limbs below the handle so they bend while the handle area remains stiff.
If your belly slat is thinner you can add a power lam between the back and belly to stiffen the handle area.
-
Here she is after she has cooled overnight.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB003_zps196774f2.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB003_zps196774f2.jpg.html)
I loosened the clamps and unwrapped the bands. Once released she still holds about 1/4" of reflex.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB004_zps9ba912a4.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB004_zps9ba912a4.jpg.html)
back to the belt sander to clean up the sides then ground down to the lines. I've rounded the back edges and sanded the back. I'll get some more pics tomorrow.
-
Looking great Pat.
-
Great post Pat B.
-
I got her cleaned up on the belt sander, getting the excess glue off and bringing her to the profile lines. I then started reducing the belly and blending the riser into the limbs...
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB001_zpsf4e59c29.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB001_zpsf4e59c29.jpg.html)

Don, you can see in these pics how the riser sits above the plane of the limbs. When done this one will be at least 1/4" above the limb. This is what keeps the handle area from flexing thus popping the riser off.
Before reducing the limb thickness I mark a line along both sides of each limb. I bring the limb thickness to these line, smooth it up and check the bend. If still stiff I put another line down the sides of the limbs and reduce the belly to that line and check the bend. Once I get some tip movement it time to start using only a scraper to tiller.
That's all for today. More later...
I've had her on the long string and have started flexing the limbs. I realized that the hickory backing should be reduced in thickness because it looks like the belly thickness will get too thin while tillering and she is almost too narrow to reduce the width. I carefully put it on the belt sander and reduced it to about 1/8" and may go thinner later. I did eave the backing thicker over the handle though.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB006_zpsed1e3c90.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB006_zpsed1e3c90.jpg.html)
-
Thanks for sharing Pat - perfect timing as I am planning on trying my first lamination bow. How thick is the hickory backing?
Mitch
-
Looking good Pat, I like how you left the extra meat under the handle to keep it from bending 8)
-
Looks like an awesome project thanks for sharing your progress
-
Mitch, 1/8" is plenty thick and you can go less. Good luck with your first.
Thanks guys.

Got it now! Thanks Pat
-
Thanks for posting, Pat. I'm watching!
-
Looking very good so far Pat,wished I could help, but this is out of my league. Watching close tho. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Looks great Pat.
-
That transition looks mighty fine, Mr. Brennan! Gonna be a good one.
-
How did the dowels work Pat? Did you see a favorable change in your glue up?
-
Pearlie, the dowels worked like a champ. Best thing since sliced bread. With the dowels at the handle and small clamps at the tips the backing didn't move at all while I wrapped the glue-up.
Pappy, this feels alien to me. I used to do more backed bows but my heart is with selfbows.
Thanks all.
-
how's it coming Pat? We need an update ;)
-
I worked on her a little today. On the long string now but soon should have low brace. Just haven't had much time to work on her.
-
Hi Pat,
Really enjoying this...first bow I ever shot was lemonwood...nice to see this one coming along...when I saw that sunny window I thought you got a new shop! Then you must have moved back to the basement in the last pic. Stay warm!
Rand
-
Rough, dirty work in the basement, Rand and cleaner work in the sun room. ;)
-
looks very cool, keep the pictures commin

I just checked the reflex. It has gained some. I glued in 3/4" and ended up with 1/4" off the form. As I reduce the belly the reflex is increasing. It is sitting at 1 1/4" now. My goal was a flap profile when shot in.
-
I got a little more done this weekend. After a bit of scraping and exercising I got her braced. This isn't the first low brace but is not full brace height...
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/hickorybackedlemonwood001_zps0517c2cb.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/hickorybackedlemonwood001_zps0517c2cb.jpg.html)
I marked the string track at the tips...

...and added tip overlays. I went with osage on the bottom and lemonwood on top, glued them with TBIII and rubberband clamps...
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/hickorybackedlemonwood005_zpsaecfdeb9.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/hickorybackedlemonwood005_zpsaecfdeb9.jpg.html)
After the glue dried I shaped the tips...

Here she is. Not finished yet. I still have to reduce the weight some. I figured she's about 70#@26" now. My next session I'll have her down to 50#-55#@26" where I want her to be. The rubberbands are holding the leather arrow rest on til the glue dries. I'll then shape it to fit my hand.

Looking good Pat.... 8)

Sweet work so far Pat.
-
slick looking tips! 8)!
-
Hey Pat,
Them tips are right sexy! Nice looking bow...:)
Rand
-
Looking good Pat, I like it
-
Looking good, reminds me of sapwood backed osage, :).
-
Looking great Pat.
-
Look'n goooood. Thanks for doing this.
-
Thanks guys. I' looking forward to putting a few arrows through her to see how she performs. I'll have to get the weight down some first.
-
lookin good pat.
-
That's shaping up quite nicely Pat! I can certainly appreciate you using the classic design with this combination. I really like that! Josh
-
Look'n fine.........can't wait for more....
DBar
-
I had a chance to do a bit more work lately. I shaped the arrow rest and added a leather overlay to fill out the back of the handle...

I've reduced the weight to 55#@25" for now. I'll try to sweat off a pound or two by leaving her braced(5", full brace is around 6.5")for a few hours, check the weight and adjust as necessary. Here she is at 5" brace height...
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/lemonwoodALB004_zps37f7ff9c.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/lemonwoodALB004_zps37f7ff9c.jpg.html)
-
Lookin good Pat!
-
Yeah Steve, she's coming along. Thanks
-
Looking great. :)
-
Looks awesome so far Pat! Can't wait to see her all slicked up!!
-
Pat,
Looking really nice...I gotta build a place to work in the winter and hot summer...BTW...stay warm for the next few days...looks like I need to get the woodstove going down here in the sunny flatlands!
Rand
-
I took her out and put a dozen arrow through her. She shoots right where I'm looking but she is a little shocky. I'll reduce the tips some more and see if that helps. I still have to drop her weight a bit more too.
-
Hows she comin along?...i had to go way to far back to find this post btw ;)
-
Just waiting for her prom dress. ;)
-
I can't wait Pat.
-
Gidday pat, new member here I'm building my first lam board bow so have watching this one keenly. Mine is a little shocky also.
-
Welcome to PA Shamus. Try to get the tips as narrow as you can. Removing the excess physical weight will help reduce the shock.
Please post pics of your bow. Either start a new thread or post it right here. ;)
-
Ok pat will do, I'm a bit nervous to make the tips as some of you guys on here do.
-
If the tips are 1/2" thick you can narrow them to 3/8" or less. Try narrowing them a little at a time and test to be sure they aren't bending.
-
Thanks for that pat. Look forward to seeing your bow all dressed up. :)
-
Hi Pat,
I look forward to seeing the "Prom Dress"...wonder what color you will choose?
Rand
-
Simple but elegant, Rand. ;)
-
If she doesn't like her dress....cause you know how women can never make up their minds....I have a piece of tanned gator skin that she could try on ;-)
-
The prom dress came I(Thanks Cipriano) and she's all dolled up and ready for the prom. Here are a few pics for your viewing pleasure.

Here are a few more. Note her name. If you want to get a good close up view of her she will be on the raffle table at this years Tennessee Classic. I'm donating this "Classic" style bow to Twin Oaks Bowhunters to help them raise funds for the Classic and as appreciation to Pappy and all the members of Twin Oaks. She will be escorted by 3 poplar arrows I made just for her.

I was gonna ask you where she was?! Great look with the skins and hemp handle! You got a full draw comin?
-
I'll get a full draw pic an a pic of the snake skin backing soon. The snake was a road killed coachwhip from Cipriano. Thanks amigo. The handle wrap is brown hemp cordage from Wal-Mart that I will saturate with Massey finish. She pulls 54#@26"
-
Dang Pat,that baby turned out nice and what a sweet suprise, ???now it's going to cost me a bunch of money. ;) Thanks so much, outstanding work and very Classy bow for sure. :) :) :)
Pappy
-
Love that classic shape Pat! Ive fallen in love with straight bows all over again the last few months.
-
Pappy, this is the least thing I can do for you and the Twin Oaks gang. You guys go all out for the rest of us, it is a pleasure to help y'all out when I can.
Thanks Pearlie, these classic bows are becoming some of my favorites too.
-
that looks awesome pat, great work as always.
-
She looks just about perfect from here Pat !
Guy
-
Thanks Jordan and Guy. She was fun to build. I was pretty careful not knowing what to expect from my first lemonwood experience and I think that care paid off.
-
Very elangant Pat. There is nothing like a classic bent stick man. I like it a lot. Some day I will make it out there for the classic with the fam. It's just a pretty far journey :). Very nice of you to donate her.
-
Come out great, Pat!
Nice work all around, those tip overlays are sharp!!
-
I just have one word for this Pat, DAMN, gonna be the prettiest girl at the prom, bub
-
That turned out great Pat! Good gesture donating it to Twin Oaks.
-
Amazing!! Just amazing. I love everything about this bow. Classic look and sweet curves. I am glad that skin worked out. I love that subtle look of the coachwhip... Cipriano
-
If you have ever been to the Tenn Classic you will know why I donate something every year. It is a very cheap payment for being able to enjoy such a beautiful setting with such great folks.
Cipriano, I also love the subtle look of the coachwhip also. This is my second bow with coachwhip skins.
-
Finished up nicely Pat, a handsome bow. Gonna have to get myself some tickets in the can for a chance at that one, a fine afb of lemonwood will be a real nice prize for someone.
-
Had to look again to be sure I wasn't dreaming, you generosity is over whelming. :)
Thanks again,it is a beauty. :)
Pappy
-
thats one good looker pat, timeless simplicity.
-
Is there a way to get raffle tickets all the way out here in Idaho :)
-
Thanks ohma. I've always been a fan of timeless simplicity. 8)
Pappy my generosity doesn't come close to the generosity you guys at Twin Oaks present to all that come to the Classic. If I could do more I would. ;) Don't forget to put me to work when we get to Twin Oaks on the Tuesday before the Classic.
Matt, I'm sure we can work something out. ;)
-
Just let me know Pat
-
Dang Pat that is real nice makes me want to make one out of my lemonwood.
-
Thanks Yeti. I got this from James Parker so it might be some of yours anyway. ;)
-
Well, I finally got a full draw pic today. Here we are...

Great bow and build along Pat. Lots of good info and a beautiful and classic bow. Super generous as always with the donation. I will be needing some tickets, wish I could make the trip. Ken

Very nice Pat! Sure hope to get to the classic someday.
-
Great bow for a great cause. Thanks for sharing the build Pat!
-
Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words.
Kenneth you'll have to shorten your draw. This bow only draws 26". ;D I wish you could make it back east to the Classic again. I promise better accommodations next time. ;)
-
26" draw? EXACTLY the right length for me. Perfect coincidence? I think not....It's meant to be! Now just who could I trust to sign my name to the tickets if I were to send them the money, someone that would have no interest in that bow for themselves and would not be tempted.
Drawing a perfect blank here. I got nothing! I seriously don't think I know anyone that wouldn't want that bow!!!

I would do it for ya Jdub.... but it will look abit fishy when I WIN IT...jes sayin 8).... Brian

That's what I was sayin'....not sayin', just sayin'!
-
What are y'all saying, not saying, just saying?
Send all monies to Pappy and if you win I'll mail the bow to you...I mean it! ;D
-
Lol Jdub... Pat that is really a sweet bow. I would really like to try lemonwood myself but I have no idea where to find it... Brian
-
Brian, James Parker gave me this lemonwood stave a few years ago. I think there in a company on the west coast that sells lemonwood but it ain't cheep.
-
Very nice pat. I may have to put a few tickets 8 that can and give brian a run for his money. That's just my draw too. We'll done.
-
That came out awesome pat. Someone is going to be very lucky. Great gesture :)
-
Just stumbled on this thread, Pat. Work's getting in the way - big time. Nice build on this bow. That old profile is still about as sexy as they come. Good on ya! Gonna have to spend a few bucks now on tickets! Watch out, Pappy! >:D
-
how much are the tickets gonna be, if I won it i'd let pat and pappy give it to some deserving soul, not my draw length
-
That came out great, Pat. What a nice stick - I like it.
